I was walking home with my best friend, Jane. We've been best friends before we could walk. I trusted her with all my deepest secrets, hell I trusted her with my life! Oh sorry my name's Cleo by the way. At this particular moment in time, I was 16 turning 17 in the following March.
I was the captain of the boys soccer team, yes I said the boys soccer team. I was too good for the girls team so coach made a couple of calls to the head of sports administration, talked it over with the school and my parents. Before you knew it I was on the team.
Being a girl on an all boys team can be tough if you don't show them that you deserve to be on the team just as much as they do. So later on in the season after I'd been moved from goalie, to defence, to mid-field and then upfront and I scored more that half of the goals that season coach decided to have a team meeting.
Nick was captain before and nobody liked him but somehow convinced everyone to vote for him, or just rigged the whole thing. Apparently everyone had voted him out and voted me in. I went from being the first girl to get on the varsity boys soccer team, to the first girl to be voted captain of the varsity boys soccer.
Anyways, that day was a bad day. It was the day that I had kicked a ball at Stacy Wood, the most popular girl in our grade, and it hit her so hard in the back of her head. She screamed so loud it caught the attention of over half the student body. Fred, one of my team mates and close friends, told her it was him even though I told him I would handle it. As a consequence of him 'kicking' it at her, she pushed a girl down, took of her shoes and threw them right at Fred's head! Over dramatic much. I felt so guilty about it. The guys really treated me like their baby sister, always looked out for me and for that I am thankful.
After that I had soccer practice and Fred was there with a slight bruise on his forehead. I went up to him and apologized for the 100th time. What came next really surprised me, he asked me out. Like on a date. With me. I honestly couldn't believe that Fred wanted to go on a date with me. Obviously I said no because he's one of my best friends. I told this to Jane and she was so disappointed in me. "You and Fred would make such a cute couple. He's so hot and you're so cute!"she'd said.
"Yuck! Barf in my mouth." I yelled and cringed at the thought of Fred and me as a couple.
"Don't tell me you don't find him just him just the least bit attractive?"
"I only like him as a friend; he's like a brother to me." I replied. I honestly only liked him as a friend. I mean Fred was very attractive, sweet and caring but I could never like him more than a friend. Finally we got to my house, where an unexpected surprise was waiting for me. Two moving trucks, my house almost completely empty and my mom giving me the 'don't just there, do something' look.
I remember a tidal wave of memories that happened in my 15 years in Denver just flashing in my head. What was going on? Oh maybe it's nothing, I thought. Maybe we're just moving 2 blocks away right? There's no way mom would force me to leave everything I've every known for a really far away place right? RIGHT?!
