Dev's Diary

Charu's mother had brain cancer.

Charu hadn't left her home for three weeks, I was starting to get concerned.

"Charu?" I knocked on the door, and there was no response.

"Charu, it's me." I tried once more, and the doorknob twisted open. I saw Charu, and she wasn't looking too good. Her eyes were puffy and swollen, and her nose was a shade of red. Instinctively, I reached out and hugged her. She buried her face in my chest and sobbed.

"Why didn't she tell me?" Charu looked at me with tear-stained eyes, and my heart wrenched.

"Aunty's fine now, she just needs rest." I coaxed her, and Charu nodded. I leaned toward, to kiss her once more. But a sharp nasal male voice stopped me.

"Charu?" The voice called out, and Charu winced.

"I'll call you later-" Charu kissed my cheek, and slammed the door on my face before I could speak up. I rubbed the back of my neck sheepishly and wished that she hadn't broken away. But I'd seen Charu smile, and that was enough to reassure me that she was alright.

"Dev?" A voice snapped me out of my thoughts.

"Huh?!" I blinked rapidly multiple times, realizing that I'd been swimming in my own thoughts.

"See, he's not even paying attention!" Washington Sundar scoffed, and I elbowed him on the ribs.

A Good friend would cover for you when you're zoning out, but Washee, he'll just rat you out.

I made a mental note to scare the life out of him during practice by dropping a rubber snake into his kit.

"You're phone's been ringing for the past 10 minutes," He pointed and I frowned, reaching out I saw 15 missed calls from Charu.

Something was wrong.
