After their trip to the nursery, Buta was sure it would take them hours in the leatherworks shop and the ornaments boutique, but Lanying did not take long.  She found a long, deep pink leather strap, about four inches wide that suited her needs.  And she asked the craftsman to make two rows of holes down the length of the strap measured at about two inches apart.  The straps would be delivered to the orphanage when they were complete.  Then, on to the ornaments boutique where Lanying chose a circular, silver, filigree bell in three different sizes.  She requested the attendant add hooks onto all three hundred silver bells, one hundred of each size.  And Lanying would pick them up the following day.  She left the shop smirking.  That was a lot of bells.

When they finally left the boutique it was dinnertime

When they finally left the boutique it was dinnertime.  Lanying called Matron Mother and requested permission to have Buta stay with her in the city for the night.  She explained the errands they still needed to run and informed Matron Mother that an arborist would be arriving in the morning with a surprise.  Matron Mother was elated and gave her permission.  She winked at Buta.  JieJie sure knew how to fawn over the Matron.  It was time to eat.  They decided on shumai and chose one of the local favorites for dinner.

Buta sat quietly across from Lanying enjoying his shumai, trying to decide whether or not to pry into the desk drawer incident.  Finally, he asked softly, "JieJie, what was supposed to be in the drawer?"

Lanying smiled sadly, "Keepsakes, it was supposed to be my family's keepsakes."

"Were they valuable?" Buta asked, unable to understand why Bohai would want keepsakes.

"No, they're not some rare, expensive valuables or anything like that.  But they meant the world to me, and Bohai knows that."

Buta couldn't believe it, "What were they, JieJie?"

She answered without looking in his direction, hiding her tears. "My brother's toy car, my father's broken watch, my mother's tiny, silver bracelet, and my parents' wedding rings.  They were the only things I had left of them.  And if I didn't read the situation wrong, Bohai will try to get money in exchange for them."

Buta was aghast.  Her brother actually did something so despicable, this man really was a degenerate!  "JieJie, we'll get them back, don't worry."

"Yes, Buta, I believe we will," she said, passing him a dumpling.  "Eat!"

  "Eat!"
