The duo could travel much faster through the Western Xie Mo Forest than the Peaks. Only stopping to rest and eat, they were averaging around three to four hours of sleep a night. It took about five days to reach the Northeastern corner of the forest. Mingzhu found it just as beautiful as the Western edge. Giant fir trees stood at least one hundred fifty to two hundred feet tall. Dogwood trees, chestnut and hazelnut trees, and bare fruit trees were in abundance. There were even gutta-percha trees whose sap could be used as an extremely durable glue. It was magical.
Xiang Yi found a large clearing next to a small brook to set up camp in. And the team got to work on long-term living quarters. Mingzhu decided it was time to practice her power over nature. She found a corner of the clearing where a henge of small fir trees stood and began to bend them into an enclosed hut. The trees were molded into walls and a roof, small but efficient. Inside, she added her rolled-up tent as padding for a sleeping mat on the earth. It was time to break out the fluffy pillow. Next, the kitchen.
Outside, Xiang Yi was "checking the perimeter." In reality, he was marking his territory to keep other animals at bay. She'd seen him do it several times while they were traveling. Mingzhu had absolutely no qualms about it. It was just another layer of protection. She looked around the nearby area and decided to use trees other than fir for her next project. She felt a little guilty using nature this way but knew, in most instances, nature was glad to lend a helping hand. She called forth four different varieties of trees for different projects. Mahogany for a kitchen shelf, cedar for a dining table, Red Torreya for a cutting block table, and pine for a stool. The young goddess pulled her tools from her pouch, having smelled the different woods she felt the need to assemble the projects by hand. By the end of the week, she finished all four of her projects along with a few Red Torreya steamer baskets.
Xiang Yi was relieved she was done playing with wood. He needed to know what else could be done for their new home. Mingzhu began removing equipment from her pouch. Kitchen utensils, pots, pans, plates, bowls, cups, lamps, spices, a few vegetables, rice, flour, cooking oil, a wok, and her bow and arrows, all came out of the Bountiless Pouch. She waved her hand, setting all the equipment and food in its proper place. She nodded her head and smiled. Done.
"I think that should just about do it. There are only three more things we need. A large fire pit in the center of camp, a clay stove, and lamp oil. Actually, I'll also plant a garden, but that must wait until spring. I'm going to go explore a bit and see if I can find a good deposit of clay. Can you build a fire pit?" she asked looking at Xiang Yi.
