Chapter 13: Mistake
We were eating dinner in total silence. I took a sip of my wine, but secretly observed Kostas consume his steak. He eats with such elegance and manners, it's so unreal. I eventually go back to eating my own dinner and allow the thoughts in my head to roam freely.
The atmosphere in this house has been completely crippling for the past two weeks. Kostas chose not to speak to me and does so only when necessary. To the outside world, he is the perfect husband and every girls dream. He showers me with gifts, takes me to the most expensive restaurants and hotspots in town, drapes kisses all over me and shows me so much love and affection. I know better, though.
It's that façade that he puts up for the world. It's starting to sicken me. He hates me and is showing it more and more at home each day. I've never been this miserable in my life. He makes me feel like I've done something so wrong just by breathing. I don't know what's happened to us, but sooner or later I'll need a thorough explanation instead of these bursts of anger that he gives me. They only render me even more confused on why he's treating me like this.
I sigh, maybe I shouldn't have agreed to this arrangement...
Out of no where we hear slamming doors and absolute ruckus coming from certain areas of the mansion. We stop eating, turning our heads towards the door.
"The hell is going on?" Kostas muttered irritably.
We get our answer once Jacques makes a dramatic entrance. I smiled.
"Bonjour mes amis!" He threw his arms in the air implying "lo and behold."
Kostas runs a hand over his face. "Jacques, the hell are you doing here?!"
Jacques, unaffected by Kostas' blatant display of indignation, sat right next to me at my end of the long table, smiling and giving me a kiss on the cheek.
"Isn't it obvious? To congratulate the newlyweds," he exclaimed, as he snapped his fingers, sending out an order to the maids.
I sigh exasperatedly, but still manage to have a tired smile on my face. "Really Jacques, you know this isn't necessary."
"Honestly."
He looks at both of us skeptically. "absurde!"
"Jack!"
A big bottle of champagne and a cake to commemorate our pack of lies, and Jacques' own plate of food was brought into the room and set on the table. The maids grabbed our glasses and brought them to Jacques, who was pouring our glasses to the hilt. He was so enthusiastic, I couldn't tell if he was being facetious or was too stubborn or dense to see that neither Kostas nor I was willing in any of this.
"Now, let's eat and drink!" He laughed.
Kostas openly glared at him and continued to do so even after the maids left us to dine. He looked like he was close to having enough.
"Jacques, just what are you trying to pull here?! You know that this is all fake," he hissed.
He drank his champagne as if it were the sweetest ambrosia. "Well, if you won't attempt to enjoy the charade then I will."
"In other words, this is just another excuse for you to throw parties?" I ask, sensing I already knew the answer and roll my eyes.
He shrugged and smirked.
"I always knew you two would somehow make amends."
"Uh, not really," I chime in.
Kostas leaned over and emphasized, "We still very much hate each other, Jack."
