Chapter 8: Yielding
He was putting up a convivial front, I could easily tell. There he stood with a bouquet of a dozen rare blue roses and a box full of some expensive-looking Godiva chocolates. As you could tell, he was likely giving good face for my mom's sake. Funny, 'cause she was too busy talking his ear off to notice.
She couldn't help it. Mom hasn't seen him in an even longer time than I have. Plus, she and Sofia were the only ones who probably still had fond memories of him. Kostas did spoil her while we were together afterall. Which leads to why she's speaking a thousand words per minute currently.
"My have you grown, Kostas! You look more handsome than how I last remember you," mom gushed out.
Oh dear Lord...
"Mrs. Lovett, you are mistaken," Kostas chuckles, bending down and kissing her on the cheek. "It is you who has grown more beautiful. So much time has past by and you still don't look a day over 30."
Oh don't make me barf! That sickly sweet, deep tone of his and that charming smile really struck a chord. Damnit! Why was he here?! What was he up to?!
"Oh stahhhpppp!" she snorted. "And call me Genesis or Gen. Whichever pleases you." Sigh, mothers.
Mom fanned herself as if it were 90 degree weather and faced me. "Honey, why didn't you tell me you two gotten back together?!" she giggled as she smacked his chest.
"Huh?"
"All this time I thought you were living life like a shut in when you were really having your own fun," she joked accusingly while moving her eyebrows in a suggestive way. I suggest they stop moving. "Shame on you!"
"Uhh," what could I say? I was stuck. Obviously, mom had been told a big ass, bold-faced lie.
The picture was clear to me now: whether I wanted to or not, Kostas was going to make me his "wife" and babymama. Right now, he was acting like a pro and everything was going according to his plan. I should have expected as much from a man of his abilities.
I know, I did say before that he was indeed a man of morals, ethics, and values and—last time I checked—lying wasn't his cup of tea; but of course let's not forget that Kostas is a businessman too, which means he automatically had to be a cynic. i.e. lying is requisite to get more of what he wants.
"Ughh, this girl."
Suddenly, she jumped. Probably a lightbulb had went off in there or something. "Excuse me, where are my manners?! Would you like anything to drink, Kostas? Soda? Water? Coffee? Tea? Anything at all, just ask."
He smiled wide once again. "Coffee... if that's okay?"
"No problem." Then she skipped her way into the kitchen.
My fake smile immediately faded away as I rolled my eyes, narrowing them at him.
"You sneaky motherfu-," I seethed.
"Watch how you speak to your boss, Mía," he smirked.
"Don't you mean boyfriend... or wait, was it wife and future mother of your demon seeds?"
Kostas shrugged. "Either way you put it, you're still getting paid by me."
I rolled my eyes once again, but the fear of them rolling back into my eyesockets had me stymied. "Jesus, you're really set on doing this, aren't you?"
