Chapter 10: Drama and Visits
A couple of days have passed since the last time I went to visit Sofia. Kostas, my mother, as well as my job, and school practically begged for my whole-hearted attention. However, there's no excuse for my actions, I was being a bad sister. I couldn't forget that the only reason why I was doing all of this was because of Sofia. With each reminder, things got better.
I jogged into the Cancer Center with paps hot on my heels. I don't know how they know it was me, I had a scarf covering my head and some big ass shades covering nearly half of my face. But, the fact remains, they chased me all the way to the hospital until they were stopped at the doors by security.
I passed the main lobby and continued towards the elevators. Thankfully I was the only person waiting for one, 'cause things surely would have been hectic. One of the elevator doors opened and I gladly walked in and pressed for the floor.
As the elevator went higher and higher up the building, so did my eagerness to see my little sister. The elevator stopped and with a ding the doors opened. I walked out and saw Nurse Alex walking down the hall, giving the clipboarded paper in his hand an intense stare.
"'Sup, Alex?" I smiled.
Clearly, I surprised him by the way he jumped nearly ten feet in the air. I laughed.
"Dammit...Mía!"
My laughter subsided into giggles. "Sorry, sorry Alex. I didn't mean to scare you like that?"
He sucked his teeth. "Whatever...its been a while."
I sighed and follow him in his stride. "Yeah things have been...uh, pretty busy lately."
"I can see too," he smirked, pulling out a magazine from under his clipboard. "I was surprised, I had no idea you had relations to money."
I rather he didn't, as a matter of act I rather that no one didn't but I guess the whole world knows now. The title printed on the magazine cover in big, bold letters had me lost for words:
"KOSTAS SARANTOS BACK TOGETHER WITH OLD FLAME??"
What aggravated me most were the words old flame. Like, dafuq really?!
"Uhh yeah, I guess I do," I muttered. I came up with something quick. "I'm just not one to boast, y'know? I have a good thing going on and I don't want to jinx myself."
Alex nodded his head and smiled at me. "You love him?"
"I—" Thankfully a fellow nurse came up to him about tending to another patient.
"Ok...looks like duty calls. You know the room, Mía."
I nod and he leaves.

At the doorway I see Sofia drawing with her one good arm, her right arm. I'm at a loss for words. I just keep watching her.
Minutes later, she turns her head and sees me.
"Hi, Mía!"
"Hey squirt," I greet back while ruffling up her curly locks. "How've you been?"
"Good...my arm's okay, too." She refers the place where her arm used to be as her "arm," even though it is no longer there. Sofia told me a while after the surgery that she could still feel it. All that's left is a nub, what's left as a reminder of what used to be.
I'm pained. "Look, don't worry about it, okay? Recently, I've been saving up to get you a prosthetic arm...Y'know, those robotic ones?"
She smiles, but it's not the same. There's no light in her eyes nor is there any real enthusiasm on her face. She'll probably have to try it on, then she'll get used to the idea.
