Newt was so shocked he could hardly move. Alex once again grabbed his hand and propelled him through a much thiner crowd to one of the waiting Bergs.

They were hustled into one and directed to a room that was lined with seats. There was surprisingly few people in the room.

Still in a state of shock, he hardly noticed when Alex pushed him into a seat and fastened the seatbelt. She and Dylan sat on either side of him.

"I can't believe it," Newt said aloud to himself. "The bloody shanks lied!" This attracted a little attention, but Newt didn't care. He knew that this shouldn't upset him as much as it did, but he couldn't believe anyone, even WICKED, would lie about something so serious.

Alex was giving him a strange look.

        "What?" he said irritably.

What's a shank?" she said. It seemed so stupid a question right now but he tried not to yell at her. He'd been doing that alot and he figured he'd better be nice to the people who just saved his life.

"It's something we used to say in the Glade," he told her.

"How many of you were there?"

        "About fifty."

"So you guys just kind of, made up your own words?"

"Who says that's not a real word?"

"It's not a word I've heard that was used like that."

"Will you two stop bickering! We have bigger problems right now. One of which is what are we supposed to do when we get to this new city?" Dylan said.

Newt paused to think. He obviously wanted to find his friends. The needed to know that he wasn't dead.

"We should find my friends," Newt said.

"How do you know they're in the city we're going to?"

Newt shrugged. "I don't."

"Then how do you suppose we find them?"

Newt thought again. Then he said something that he never expected to hear come out of his mouth. "We have to go back to WICKED."

"No freaking way, dude. Not a chance." Dylan said automatically.

        "Why not?" Newt argued.

"What do you mean why not? First of all, after what you told us at the Berg station, it sounds like they're the ones kidnapping immunes. Second, why would you even want to go back there after what they did to you?"

"I obviously don't want to. But they probably know where the others are. And if they're there, then I want to go too." he said stubbornly.

Dylan shook his head. "Not a chance, man. We need to find a more normal solution."

        "Like what?" Newt said.

"I don't know yet and I'm too tired to think. If you and Allie wanna talk about it then go walk around or something." Dylan said. He turned so his back was facing Newt.

Newt turned his head to Alex. She rolled her eyes at Dylan, even though he couldn't see her.

C'mon, let's go explore this thing," she said to Newt.

"Allie?" Newt said, trying to hide his smirk.

"Yeah. He calls me that sometimes. My real name's Alexis but I hate it. You will call me Alex," she told him.

"Yes ma'am," he said with mock respect. He realized that he barely knew this girl of her grumpy friend. "Why's Dylan so upset all the time?" he asked. Kind of direct, but they had promised Newt that they would tell him their story.

She looked down. "Yeah well, don't be too hard on him. It's been a tough few days for us,"

        "How'd you two meet?"

        "That's a longer story."

        "We have time."

"It's kinda hard for me to talk about. But I guess we did say we would tell you. I wasn't born in the city. I lived in one of the villages they set up after the sun's heat died down a bit. It was me, my twin brother Jayden, and my parents. We didn't have much, but we were happy."

She paused and blinked a few times. She rubbed her eye trying to hold back tears. Newt understood how she must feel. He didn't even remember his parent and he still missed them sometimes.

"When the Flare hit, we didn't know what was going on. Everyone just went insane. My brother and I had to run away to the nearest supply station. We were shipped to Denver and put in an orphanage. That's when it got really bad. It was horrible there and what happened to our parents only made it worse. One day, Jayden just dissapeared. Walked right out the door. I haven't seen him since.

She paused again. This time a tear escaped her eye. Newt wanted to comfort her but he didn't know how.

"I was wandering around the city looking for Jayden when Dylan found me. He tried to help me look for him but we found nothing. I didn't want to go back to the orphanage alone. Dylan asked his mom if i could stay with them. I've been living with them ever since."

"Why wasn't his mom with you when you tried to escape the city?"

"When we heard that the Cranks had gotten in we were at school.  When we go home, she wasn't there. The place was a wreck. There were things thrown all over the place like there was a fight. Dylan knew we had to go but didn't want to. I packed some food and we went looking for her. By the time night fell I think he knew that it was too late. That's when we found you."

Newt stared at the floor. He didn't know what to say. Their lives sucked almost as much as his did. Almost. They walked in akward silence for a few minutes. That's when they heard people talking.

"-need to find where those kids are. Chancellor Paige covered her tracks well but we'll find them."

Newt signalled for Alex to be quiet and follow him. He crept closer to where the voices were coming from.

A different voice spoke, "those Munnies are humanities last chance for survival. If we can't find them-"

"We're going to find them! We have too. We'll search the whole planet if we have to. Thomas is the final Candidate. They won't stop now that they're this close."

Newt realized with a jolt that they were talking about the Gladers. Alex must have too. Your friends? she mouthed. Newt nodded and began walking back the way they had come. Alex quickly followed.

"I think you're right. We need to find your friends. It sounds like they're in some sort of secret safe haven. If they're all immune, that might be the last safe place on earth,"

Newt nodded. "Now we have to convince Dylan,"

Alex smirked. "That's the hard part isn't it."

A/N
