Alex's POV
Newt was shivering like it was the Arctic, but he was covered in a thin coat of sweat. It was gross.
He was groggy, but still awake so she tried to talk to him. "Newt, what happened? What did they do to you?"
When he spoke it was barely more that a whisper. "Fixed... shoulder... pain all gone... hugest bloody headache... uggh."
"You mean your shoulder is all healed?
He nodded.
"That's good. What else happened?"
"Had a dream... vision maybe... woman... wants to help us." he sputtered out.
"I think you need some sleep," she said. She had no idea what he meant but it was obviously important.
"Newt, can you try to get up so you can get to the bed?" Alex asked him.He nodded and began to sit up. She helped him stand with most of his weight against her.
She half led half dragged him to the bed. The moment his head hit the pillow, he was out like a light.
She stood there looking at him. Of all the things that happened to him, was this normal?
For her and Dylan, this was insane. But to him, was it just another obstacle?
She shook her head to clear it. I'm hungry. Would they get food? She hoped so.
Her wish was granted about an hour later. A small space at the bottom of the door opened and two trays were slid through. Soup, bread, applesauce, and some water. Not much, but still food.
She put one tray on the nightstand next to a restless Newt. He kept stirring and muttering things in his sleep.
Alex sat on the floor, ate her food, and tried not to think too much. Of she thought too much about their current situation she knew she would start freaking out again.
As Alex used her bread to soak up the last of her soup, she heard shuffling sounds coming from Newt's bed. There was a muffled groan and he sat up.
Alex had to stifle a laugh. He was still a little disoriented. His blond hair was sticking up on his head.
"Morning Sleeping Beauty," she said, biting her lip to hide laughter.
"What the bloody shuck is Sleeping Beauty?" he grumbled.
"How do you not know what... Oh right. Sorry. It's an old fairy tale. Never mind. How do you feel.
He sighed, "I have the biggest bloody headache in the history of the shuck planet." He looked down at his clothes. "Why am I wearing white?"
It was true. His dirty clothes had been replaced by clean, simple, white cotton.
"You said you had some kind of surgery. You said something about your shoulder being fixed.
Newt looked puzzled. "That's what they told me, yes." He reached his hand up and gingerly touched thebspoy where where the wound was. Apparently feeling no pain, he pressed a little harder.
"Nothing?"
"Not a bloody thing. Just a little sore," he knitted his eyebrows, "just like Tommy," he muttered.
"Who's Tommy?"
His head snapped back up like he had forgotten she was there. "One of my friends from the Glade. He's probably at the uh... immune hide out. If he's alive.
Alex nodded, not wanting to press him further. If he wanted to elaborate further, he would. She remembered something that he had said when he arrived in a dazed stupor. "You said something about a woman wanting to help us. What was that about?"
He nodded and put a finger to his lips. A clear message. They're watching us.
She got up and went to sit down beside him. He cupped his hands around his mouth and whispered into her ear.
"You know Chancellor Paige?" he said in a hushed tone.
She nodded.
"I had a dream. More of a vision, really. She spoke to me. Told me she wanted to help us find the others."
She pulled away. "How do you know?" she said aloud, since they could have been talking about anything now.
"When they fixed my shoulder, they re-implanted a device that monitors my brain and sometimes let's them control me. I guess that why my head hurts so badly.""Re-implanted?"
"Yeah. We all had one. All the Gladers. Thomas and this shuck girl even had the ability to talk to each other telepathically. It was the weirdest thing." He stared at the floor as if re-living memories, both good and bad.
"You mean Tommy?" she said with a smirk.
"Yeah but that's just a nickname. His real name's Thomas."
She nodded. "Okay so... what now?"
He thought for a bit. "Sleep," he finally concluded.
"Sleep? You just woke up. And there's food for you," she said, pointing to the other tray.
"Fine. Eat first then sleep. It feels like I have bloody elephants stomping around in my skull," he said. His eyes narrowed. "Maybe I'll uh... have dreams," He said, implying that the Chacellor could only talk to him when he slept.
"Okay then," she said getting up from his bed and lying down in the other one. Since there was no way to turn off the lights, she covered her head with blankets and tried to block out her troubles and just sleep. Be for long she did.
