'Ugh are you freaking serious?' Before I could even open my eyes I already knew where I was... in a hospital room... again. This time I actually groand out loud.
"Oh shut up and open your eyes so I know you're alive." I heard the sad and familiar voice of my brother.
I opened my eyes and turned my head toward the voice and stuck my tongue out at Louis.
"There she is. You had me worried sick!" He said as he leaned down to give me a hug.
"Ow don't move me, my head hurts." I winced.
"We'll then next time don't go passing out in the streets you idiot! You gave yourself a small concussion." He joked as he pulled away.
"I'll try but I can't make any promises." I joked back looking at him to make sure he knew I was ok now.
"Someone is here to see you. I tried to get him to leave but he wouldn't leave until you woke up, but if you don't want him here I can kick him out." He said quietly.
My eyes widened. That's when I finally looked around the room and realized we were not alone. There he stood in the far corner of the room eyes wide and full of worry. "Liam. What are you doing here?" I said as I sat up to see him better. He came. Even after what had happened this morning. He still cared about me.
"I'm sorry if you don't want me here or even want to see me, but I had to see you. I had to make sure you were ok." He said sadly. "You are awake." He said, letting out a deep sigh of relief. " I don't know what's going on. No one here wants to tell me anything, and I understand I have no right to know anything, but I hope you get better soon. I'm gonna leave now." he said frustrated and sad as he walked out the door.
I wanted to tell him not to leave, to stay with me, but I didn't. No matter how much I wanted him here I had to let him walk away. It took all the strength in me to not scream for him to come back.
Part of me was screaming at me, 'Don't let him walk out that door you idiot!,' while the other part was telling me, 'Let him go. You're doing the right thing, he needs someone who will make him happy forever.'
I hated it, but I had to deal with my decision. I hadn't realized that Louis had stepped out until there was a knock on my door and it was him along with Lei. What surprised me again was that Lei was pulling a reluctant Liam inside but he settled next to the furthest wall from me. He looked like he had been crying, his eyes were red and puffy. "Okay, what the hell is going on?" Lei asked looking at me then Liam then back at me. "That's what I would like to know but no one wants to give me any reason and she clearly doesn't want me here so why don't you ask her?" he said, wiping a tear and stormed out.
Both Lei and Louis stared at me, "What happened?" they asked in unison. I took a deep breath, "This morning I told him I can't be friends with him anymore." I said really fast. " Well we know that part but why?" asked Louis.
"You guys are perfect for each other." Lei said.
"You guys know why we can't be together." I sighed frustrated. They both shook their heads in disagreement. "It's better this way, cause once I'm gone he won't miss me as much." I added.
"That's the stupidest thing I've heard," Lei said.
"You are so dumb sis I know for a fact that Liam likes-- no he loves you and would never betray you like that." Louis said.
Every word they spoke felt like a stab in the chest, I started crying, "You think I don't realize that? You think this doesn't hurt me as well?", I sniffled.
"I honestly don't know why you are giving up and just letting him walk away." Louis asked.
"I thought if he didn't get attached to me he would just forget about me and find someone else like all other guys would." I said in a loud voice.
"Sofi, it's clear he's not like other guys," Louis said.
" I know, I know but what can I do now?" I asked.
"You can tell him the truth," they both said at the same time.
"And if it turns out he's just like all the others that we can kick him to the curve and forget about him all together. Though I feel like that's not gonna be what happens."
" I think it's too late for that now," I said, " I bet he never wants to see me again," I sighed wiping my tears away.
"Hold on,'' Lei said, taking out her cell phone.
"Hey, no no Sofi's fine, I was calling to see if you can come back please we really need to talk." There's a pause. "Oh good you're still here in the waiting room. Well then can you come back to Sofi's room please, ok bye." she hung up.
A couple seconds later we heard a knock. "Come in," Lei yelled. Liam walked in and looked around at everyone except me. "What's up Leila? What's going on?" He asked shoving his hand in his jacket pockets, and leaned against the back wall, "Sofi and you need to talk and she is now ready to tell you what's really going on so we'll leave you two to talk in peace," Lei said, grabbing her purse.
"We'll be right outside sis if you need anything." Louis said.
"Ok" I waved with a reassuring wave.
Before I could even open my mouth to talk Liam cut me off.
"Before you tell me anything I first want to know why you keep fainting and landing yourself in the hospital? What's going on?"
Its now or never. "Ok I'll tell you everything. But please don't interrupt me until I'm finished." He nods and I take a deep breath before starting.
"So a couple months before I met you I started having a lot of dizzy spells and at first I thought it had to do with being over active in sports and not eating enough. So I tried to fix my eating habits and take it slow but that didn't work. Louis eventually found out and he got worried so he made an appointment for me because as a child I hated doctors and refused to see one. So then after they ran multiple tests they found out that I had developed a rare heart condition that hadn't shown up in any of my physicals until recently. And since then I've had to watch everything I do. And it's been hard. The doctor said my heart is only going to get weaker and weaker. and there is nothing they can do. Because of all this stress and worry led to me breaking up with Gael and well, you can see how he's been taking that." I paused to take a breath before continuing. "I've also pushed most of my friends away. And that's why I can't do another relationship. What's the point? Why would I want to string you along if I already know what my fate is?"
Once I was done speaking I looked up at him and saw tear tracks running down his face. "I'm so sorry I never meant to hurt you like this," I said, wiping his tears.
"Is there anything they can do to help you?" he asked. Inodded,
"Yeah the doctor said the only solution is a heart transplant, but... they haven't found a donor yet and the heart transplant list is a long one so it could be years before I get one and who knows if I'll live that long," I replied.
"Oh" was all he said and stood up.
"Liam, where are you going?" I asked. "I need to leave," he said, walking out.
