Chapter 9: Big Fish

"This universe is divided into 5 realms. First, The Air realm; People of this realm protect the atmosphere; they are mostly peaceful individuals who generally observe and inspect the realms and don't get involved in any altercations. Second, the Earth realm; All Altruists belong to this realm. Also, creatures of the dark, like Changelings, ghouls, shifters and many more belong to the earth realm."

"Vampires and werewolves too?" I ask hopefully.

"No. They don't exist." He looks at me like he is about to laugh. "Anyway, these people are the defenders of our planet. They protect the earth from Creatures of other realms. However, we possess the ability of inheriting powers of other realms as Essences, every Altruist is gifted with essence of any one realm. Like me, I have the water essence that belongs to the water Realm; aquatic species like sirens belong to the water realm; they control the behavior of tides. The unique quality of this realm is that it can deceive and bewitch their enemies. Next is the Fire Realm; this one is different from the others; they are known for their aggressive and rageful nature. The powers of the fire realm are hard to sustain, the only creatures known of the fire realm are dragons, who are rarely seen in our time. The last one was spotted 4 years ago in an active volcano somewhere near Hawaii. Lastly, the Aether Realm. Now, the Aether Realm holds a distinct place among the five realms. They live beyond the space and time which has been locked up for centuries. The only creatures known are the Grendels and the Mystic force. The mystic forces are basically like a sentient; formless mass of energy. Before the existence of the universe, there was nothingness; dark and lifeless. The Aether was considered to be the first realms to ever exist. It ultimately gave birth to all the other realms; it is also called the 'spark of life'. Their powers mostly revolve around possession and energy charge up. They have currents flowing through their entire body and are fatal."

I recall the incident at the gas station. That unfamiliar energy that surged in me. That was the power of the Aether realm? But I also felt that rage and aggression like a fire ball in me. 

How can I possess essence of more than one realm? Why do the Tridents want to kill me? whose orders are they following? Why didn't Ethan tell me all this? Why me? My brain takes time to register and the questions starts popping like corn kernels in those disposable foil pan that grows as the popcorn pops. 

Where were these people before yesterday?

"Any questions?" Nick asks scanning my confused face.

"Why are the Tridents after me?" I ask the first question that pops in my head.

"The Tridents didn't exist until 6 years ago. They were locked up in the Aether realm. There was a mishap 6 years ago. Err..." His gaze falls down and he fumbles. "During the incident, the barrier between the Earth and the Aether realm opened up and the Grendels were accidently set lose. Nevertheless, we were successful to seal the rift. But this caused us grave danger in the near future. The Trident siblings among the Grendels, were set on the insane task to open the rift for their master; the Mystic force. They are constantly trying to break the barrier. If the barrier is broken again." He pauses and looks at me, his eyes dark, fear stirring in them. "the Destruction that the Mystic force will bring upon this world will be unimaginable. They will wipe out the entire existence of life; destroying all the realms in the universe."

My body goes numb. The whole room fell silent. Like someone unplugged a blaring television that was too loud.

I feel Nick take my hand and squeeze it.

"But they can be stopped." His voice breaks through the silence. "You, Alexis Abner, you can stop them. You are no ordinary Altruist; you are a Sephilim."
