Sadie
Sadie heard a noise outside the den, and judging by how Alex, Rachel, and Hazel were also sitting bolt upright, they had too.
She glanced towards where she assumed Sophie was asleep, and got a sudden shock. The counselor wasn't there. Rachel nodded towards the door, then grabbed her shoes and a dagger she had uncovered from her bag.
Pulling out her wand, Sadie tiptoed around her sleeping friends and out the door. A crimson head of hair, visible above a few bushes, caught Sadie's attention first. As she watched, it bobbed away, and soon a hushed groan echoed from further down the path.
There was the sound of scuffling, and Alex was the first to hold back the branches and tiptoe after the louder... thing. Sadie ended up in the back, which she wasn't the happiest about, since the person in the back was the first to get attacked in ALL horror stories.
The girl in front (Alex, based on the green hair) suddenly hissed something that sounded like a Norse curse word and ducked behind a tree, motioning for them to do the same. Sadie dove for cover, then slowly peeked around the trunk.
A grayish creature wearing what looked like a metal swimsuit was kicking a log, grumbling in a strange language.
"What if it took Sophie?" Hazel hissed. Sadie's blood ran cold as she considered this new possibility.
"On three, we attack. One, two, THREE!" Sadie leapt out at the thing, wand extended to attack, and the other girls followed her.
She thought she had the upper hand until the thing suddenly turned, pulling out a dagger and throwing it at Sadie. Sadie just barely dodged the blade, and she couldn't help almost cussing.
Running, Sadie tried to get some distance, sorely wishing she had brought her staff. Rallying an attack, Sadie was about to throw her wand down to distract the thing when a bush rustled. Both groups paused, turning their faces towards the sound.
A blur rushed out, and when the figure stepped between the thing and Sadie, Rachel let out a shocked gasp.
"SOPHIE!"
The thing turned its face towards their counselor and grumbled at her, putting out a hand to gently push the girl behind her. Shocked, Sadie noted that the thing's face softened, almost smiling at Sophie before swinging back to them and hardening into a glare.
Pushing the thing's hand down gently, Sophie stood between them, palms up in surrender. "OKAY! Can everybody please put the sharp implements down so nobody gets hurt and I don't have to fill out a bunch of paperwork?"
The thing's head turned again, and a surprisingly humanlike voice said, "Hey, they started it!"
Sophie glared at them, and said in a chilly tone, "Sadie, Rachel, Alex, Hazel, please put your weapons down and stop messing with Ro."
Sadie dropped her wand, blinking at Sophie in surprise. "We thought she had taken you!"
Ro laughed roughly. "I'm Keefe's bodyguard! Why would I kidnap Blondie?" she said in a blank tone, which meant Sadie couldn't tell how sarcastic the comment was.
Sophie again turned to them. "That," she said, cutting a glare at Ro, who responded with a cheeky wave that made their counselor's expression soften for a second, her eyes rolling before continuing. "Is extremely CLASSIFIED information. You can't tell anyone that Ro is here or even of her existence, do you understand?"
They readily agreed, and Sophie sent them back to the dens. Sadie was thinking now, even as she settled into her sleeping bag for the second time that night.
She hadn't noticed Sophie slip in, but when she woke up bright and early, the other girl was in her sleeping bag with a faded blue elephant clutched under her chin.
As Sadie walked about that day, she tried to spot the ogre from last night, but she remained elusive. Sophie seemed to be a bit suspicious of them, but she was acting the same as always, showing them cool things around the camp and generally being her same, adorably cheerful yet unflappably cool self.
Keefe
Sophie flicked her eyes towards Keefe, and when he looked into them she sent a brief message before heading off to get ready for the hike to the waterfall.
Some of my campers found out about Ro. I just barely avoided an interspecies incident, since both the campers and Ro were trying to protect me.
Keefe cringed, but he was glad that others were looking out for her. She got into trouble without trying, and while she was good at getting out of it, she shouldn't have to fend for herself.
The well-known path to the waterfall was a welcome sight, especially because it was scorchingly hot, to the point where Keefe wondered if he could cook an egg on the large stone over the lake.
Luckily, half of the rock was cast in shadow, so they still had a spot to set their stuff on. If they wanted to go down the ametur zipline, they had to run across a section directly under the sun and then quickly jump off holding on tight to the rope until they were over the center of the lake's drop zone.
It was early July, and Keefe was again glad that the camp lasted for nine weeks.
Floating there in the cool water, Keefe was more at peace than ever. Another person braved the heat, and Keefe squinted up at them to see who, then smiled despite himself. She jumped, and Keefe tracked her with his eyes, feeling his smile more than ever.
The joyful whoop as she flew down the incline and dropped into the deepest part of the lake made Keefe's heart leap. He loved that Sophie was free to be a normal kid, smiling and laughing, freer than she'd been for a long time.
Seeing him, Sophie swam over, and Keefe pretended he hadn't been staring at her. "Hey, Foster! How's it going?"
"Pretty good. It's kinda surprising that we've been at camp for almost three weeks now, isn't it?"
Keefe readily agreed. It both seemed like they had spent centuries and only a few minutes at this camp, and he wished they could stay there forever, just floating in the lake and eating smores under the stars.
Keefe's fallen, HARD :) Also, yes. Ro was the thing Keefe called to. Sorry for the huge gap between the question and official answer :)
