Keefe
Keefe glanced towards where Sophie was leaning up against a tree, pointing a laser pointer up towards the skies to show everyone the stars and constellations, telling the stories of each. Keefe was only half listening, instead thinking of the past week, the one that was almost over. Sophie had proven exceedingly good at the whole 'counselor' thing.
Keefe was also wondering exactly what Sadie would do, if anything, to try to find out who Keefe was talking to. Why the campers were so secretive and nosy, Keefe had no idea.
The next morning, he was still pondering the questions of the last night, but the planned activity quickly took his mind off of things.
Sophie was both excited and a little nervous when she told the group about the ziplining plans, but Keefe was all nerves. Ziplining involved heights, and falling. Sophie smiled at him from across the breakfast table, and her voice projected into his mind.
Don't worry, Keefe. It's perfectly safe, but if you're nervous, I can go first. Someone needs to make sure the campers stay together and clip them on top.
Maybe I should go down first. I'm better at undoing those clips than clipping them.
Yeah, probably should then. We'll be fine. I had tons of training.
Even though the statement was meant to reassure him, Keefe felt another stab of panic. Sophie falling could still hurt her, and he did NOT want her going on something so dangerous.
He would trust her, though, if only because he also knew she would teleport away before hitting the ground, even if it meant having to mind wipe a few campers. Camp was kinda dangerous, but he also did NOT want to be the one person who always kills all the joy in everything.
Percy
Percy watched Keefe with a slight smirk, since the look on the counselor's face most likely meant that he was extremely nervous about the safety of the harness Sophie was showing them how to strap on, despite her obviously knowing what she was doing. In fact, on the entire trip up, Keefe had hovered near Sophie like he was expecting her to trip and fall back down.
It was kinda sweet, Percy thought, but Sophie had no idea that Keefe was there because he was worried about her.
Apparently she was known to be clumsy, but she shook that off when Percy had asked her on the way up, saying, "Yeah, I'm usually clumsy, but that's really only dangerous when there are a bunch of breakables, high heels and dangerous situations. OR any combination of those. Honestly, one out of three is pretty good. I'll be fine."
Now, as she was checking Keefe's vest and giving them instructions on how to land, Percy was starting to wonder if the ziplining would count as being in Zeus' realm and get him in trouble, or worse, fried.
Almost as if she had read his mind, Sophie said, "No need to worry about lightning strikes. There are no clouds, it's not that hot, and there's special protective magic around this camp, so you shouldn't worry about it."
Turning to clip Keefe to the line, she teased, "I had no idea you were afraid of heights, Keefe. Legs facing forward or pointing down, please don't flip over on purpose, arms in when you approach the landing pad.
There's a simple procedure. When I say 'clipped on,' you can then whenever you are ready say 'I'm ready to fly.' I will radio to Keefe to make sure everyone is out of the way on that side, then he will tell me it's good to go. I will tell you to 'go fly' in which case you can jump off. Clipped on."
Keefe shifted, said, "I'm really glad we didn't bring the heavy backpack," then sighed. "Ready to fly."
Sophie gave it one more tug, then said, "Good to go.
Landing you should be slowed down for, then just step onto the ramp and stand there, unhook, then when you're ready radio back up. Same for you guys with the ramp thing. Whenever you're ready, go fly."
Keefe exhaled, then walked off the edge. A third of the way down, he whooped in pure delight, and Sophie smiled.
"Form an orderly line. People who want to go first, rock paper scissors. If you want to go last and there are somehow multiple of you, do the same. No running or we all walk back down. Capiche?"
Percy somehow ended up in the second spot, and he watched as Alex was beginning to be clipped in. They went through the whole radio thing, then Alex jumped off, leaving Percy next to go.
Alex
Alex whooped in pure joy. This zipline was definitely different from the one at the waterfall lake in its security, but the view and blast of air on her face was worth it.
As she soared through the treetops, she understood why Sophie had tried to speed up the rules part. As she approached the end point, she saw Keefe standing there ready to help her unclip from the line, small from 20 feet off.
Alex thought back to Sadie's prediction. She was right, there was something freaky about Sophie, and they should most definitely face her, and soon.
She began to slow down, then her feet landed on the ramp. Walking up to where Keefe was standing, she waited for him to help her unclip, then walked over to the point where they would meet to go back to base. Soon after, Percy joined her, and they began to chat, adding the next people to come down to the conversation.
Carter
Carter bounced nervously on his toes. He had gone through the safety requirements, and now all he had to do was walk off. It was like riding Freak, but safer. Before he could stop himself, he stepped off.
Once he was actually out on the air, it was much more fun. Before long, he was chattering with the rest of the group. He heard Sophie's voice crackling over the walkie talkie.
"All Clear?"
Keefe replied, "Yup. All clear."
"I'm coming down."
The line began vibrating again, and soon he could see Sophie zooming down, a huge smile on her face. When she landed, she immediately began unclipping herself. Keefe hovered nearby until Sophie walked further up onto the platform.
"Alright, then! Let's walk back to base!" It was a pleasant walk, despite the heavy harness. The rest of the day passed pretty uneventfully, trouble- wise.
After dinner, Sophie told them to get ready for bed early, but make sure to wear shoes and bring any blankets they would want. He assumed she would have said that for a reason, so he went and got ready.
Sophie
Sophie was almost certain something was up with her campers, although they did a pretty good job of hiding it. Even if the nosy girls did find out about the multispecies alliance, they would at least be able to keep it a secret, so that was good. Still, she looked forward to the movie night as a way to relax after a long day.
Keefe had been unusually nervous about the ziplining, and Sophie wondered what that was all about.
Oblivious, oblivious, oblivious Soph.
The next chapter will have the answer to the question in the last chapter, friends!
