"I think it's all just one big fairy tale," Logan huffed as she moved her horse into the stable.
"I think you're believing what you want to believe," Leigh retorted.
Twin sisters who grew up in the big city of New York, both never believed they would leave the city. However, their powers started to come out. In desperation of staying in hiding, they fled. A small house in the middle of nowhere, there were hardly ever any visitors. It was perfect.
However, when they first arrived, everyone gave them the cold shoulder. The two heard stories of Mother Miranda, the villagers worshipped her. They believed she would protect them from whatever came. With Mother Miranda came four houses, four Lords.
House Dimitrescu, House Heisenberg, House Beneviento, and House Moreau.
The stories were unbelievable, neither twin believed what they had to say. It wasn't quite plausible. Logan was harsher to their ways while Leigh just listened in silence. While Leigh did not believe, she wouldn't pay it any mind until things started to affect her.
Both of the twins had black hair. Logan's was an inch above her shoulders and Leigh's was at her shoulders, usually in a braid. The two sisters had spearmint colored eyes, both dressing exactly alike.
Jeans and a gray t-shirt.
Though their interests were very different so it was easier to tell which was which if someone knew them well enough.
"Take us for example," Leigh said as she shut the barn doors. "We both have some sort of power that can't be explained so maybe that's what this is. Ever think about it?"
Logan shrugged as the two made for the house that sat right next to the barn. "Maybe, but we don't even seem entirely likely. Then again, there's a world out there that not many people understand..." She shrugged her shoulders as the two went inside.
Leigh walked over to the stove and placed a pot of the stove. She took in a breath as she started taking spices down. She didn't hear anything outside of her sisters voice and focused her sense of smell on anything that could be going on outside of the house.
"You're worried, aren't you?" Logan asked.
Chuckling, Leigh started to put broth in the pot. "What was your first clue?" She sighed, mixing in the meat and potatoes next. "Something's not right here, it's beginning to affect my senses, Logan. Blood, I can smell it."
Her sister watched her. Leigh could point out everything that any normal person couldn't, even more than any abnormal person. She had a sensory overload, she could detect the smallest of things. If she focused, she could block everything out and slow time down to the point that she could react to certain situations.
New York was part of their problem, Leigh couldn't hide forever.
But neither could Logan, Logan less than Leigh as she didn't try to hide.
"We just need to stay sharp," Logan said as she watched her sister cook.
The two remained silent and Logan leaned back in her chair. There was something Logan didn't understand. Had anyone in the village ever seen Mother Miranda or the Four Lords? Where did the story come from?
"Where do you think the stories come from?"
"I think someone appeared one day and started to call herself Mother. On one hand, she probably did something to make the villagers believe in her." Leigh moved a spoon around in the soup. "Everything else is cannon fodder." She looked back at Logan who raised a brow, "meaning it doesn't matter, Logan."
Logan nodded before sighing, "guess you're right.." She murmured and rubbed her face. Logan could defend herself well enough for the both of them, but missed the things that Leigh did. Leigh caught everything, but she couldn't defend herself as well as Logan. Leigh knew how to shoot, but nothing like Logan.
They made up a team that complimented each other.
Finally, after an hour of cooking, Leigh placed the pot down for dinner. Logan looked at the pot and her stomach growled. "I'm going to smoke before dinner," she hoped up and held a cigarette to Leigh who shook her head. "Suit yourself," she chuckled and walked outside.
As the door closed behind her, Leigh began making her own plate. She sighed, her own stomach grumbling. It had been a long few months, but they were finally beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
So much running, so much hiding once they were finally found out. No one would ever think to look for them in the village or find them for that matter. As she placed her bowl down, there was a snarl and something slammed against the door.
She froze, looking at the door. "Logan?" She looked at the counter and then put her hand in the cabinet under the sink. She took a pistol that had been taped to the top of the cabinet and slowly walked towards the door.
"Logan, this isn't funny!" Leigh hissed. As children, her sister liked to scare her, jumping out of random spots. However, nothing ever this bad. The slamming against the door and the snarl, that wasn't something Logan would do. She slowly got to the door, "Logan?" She whispered again.
There was no answer.
Slowly, Logan pushed the door open.
Footprints in the snow where Logan had been and a cigarette, the end was still red. The flame had barley been lit when it hit the ground. She looked forward, at the footprints and narrowed her eyes as blood covered the ground. There were more footprints all around, some looked like bare footprints.
Leigh closed her eyes, breathing in. "Screaming... Snarling... Anything," she whispered as her hearing began to focus on the words she had spoken.
There was screaming and hollering in the distance, but there was also snarling from a beast. It sounded like a wolf, but bare footprints wouldn't belong to a wolf.
A wolf had paw prints.
She slowly opened her eyes, running in the direction of the screaming and the snarling. Footprints that she figured belonged to her sister made their way towards more houses in the village. Around every footprint was blood, sometimes more, sometimes less.
"Logan!"
