AN: Sorry it's so long!
THE NEXT MORNING. THE MORNING AFTER.
The sun was peeking in the broken blinds. The birds were chirping. The Southside was awake again.
Adalaide was still at her father's home. She was still pretty fucked up from the line of cocaine. The morning was filled with regret. After the rush of high from the drug, it left a broken girl on a bed.
Ada was woken up by pebbles thrown at her window, she slowly sat up and went to open the window to find Carl staring back at her.
Carl sighs, "I've been waiting forever, you sleep a lot." He says. "You gotta pack your stuff, Fiona went all Fiona on Sammi; you can stay with us again."
Ada simply nods. "Uhm, now's not a really good time right now." She says. "My Dad is super aggressive at the moment, he'd beat your ass if he saw you outside."
Carl shrugs off the comment. "Then don't pack your stuff, can you just come outside and we can hang? I missed you."
The girl was so desperately wanting to pack her stuff, run out the door, and live with her best friend but that wasn't reality. Reality was staying at this run down piece of shit house with a piece of shit father who makes her take drugs.
Ada smiles, not wanting to bore her friend with her life drama. "Sure." So she agrees, she quietly walks out her room and down the stairs, thanking her father for him being passed out on the couch. Ada opens the front door and is faced by Carl with a smile.
"We all fucking missed you, Ada."
"I was only gone one night." Ada laughs, the teens hurrying away from her home, away from her father. "So what did I miss?"
"Jimmy-Steve is back. Fiona fucking kissed him."
"Holy shit!" Ada says, remembering the con from years ago. "She's married though."
"It's Fiona, what did you expect?" Carl says, by now they reached his home. Carl opened the unlocked door to find everyone in the kitchen, everyone except Ian.
After opening the door, Carl runs up the stairs to get ready for school.
Who Ada was shortly informed was found and now was held in a detention since he went all maniac on everyone with Yvgeney. Ada hoping both boys were safe, she goes to sit down at the table next to Debbie.
"Oh Ada! I missed you." Debbie says, hugging the girl.
"I missed you too Debs." Ada admits. "Where is everyone?"
"Well Lip's in college which you already now, Ian is in a mental ward, Fiona's with Gus, and-"
Debbie is cut off by Sammi walking into the room, having raging eyes towards Ada. She scoffs, really fucking loudly, pouring herself a coffee.
"First day of school!" Sammi announces, ignoring Ada. "Carl, Chuckie, get your asses down here or I'm giving your pancakes to the next homeless guy I see."
"You stole that from the homeless shelter, so full circle." Debbie says, looking at her phone.
"I earned it fair and square. Told them I'm raising seven kids alone. And now I'm forced to raise Miss Ada here because she doesn't like where she lives."
"Oh boo who." Ada snarks sarcastically.
"Young lady if I hear one other word come out of that mouth, I'm going to-"
"What? You're going to what?" Ada says, annoyed and done with Sammi's bullshit. No one forced the bleached blonde to live there, in fact she forced herself.
"I'm calling about Ian Gallagher?" Debbie asks on the phone. "Yeah, he was admitted last night. What are your visiting hours? 2:00 to 3:00? And can anyone visit?"
Sammi walks towards the table, setting a plate full of pancakes down. "Easy Liam, chubby cheeks are cute only for so long on black men." As she takes the syrup from the boy.
Ada turns to give Sammi a glare at her racially insensitive comment, Liam was always going to be adorable.
Carl raced down the stairs, grabbing a plate full of pancakes. "Chuckie turned on the chocolate faucet upstairs in the bathroom."
"Ew, he's making hot sloppys?" Debbie asks, disgusted.
"Uh-oh. I know what this is about." Sammi says worried.
"What the six churros he ate last night?" Carl asks.
"No, he's nervous to start at a new school. It's his fourth one. He gets beat up a lot." She admits as she sees Debbie putting on makeup. "Way too much lip liner, young lady!"
Debbie rolls her eyes, "When did you become my mother?"
"I've had enough back talk from you and from Adalaide." Sammi says. "It's like whatever Fiona says, it's final. I mean Ada isn't even her kid!"
"You know I can hear you right?" Ada says.
"She's putting all that skank makeup on to get out of the friend zone with that Derek dude." Carl says, turning to Debbie.
"We are not in the friend zone." Debbie says, putting more lip liner on.
"How does he touch your arm?" Asks Ada as Carl nods.
"If he punches it, it means you guys are friends. If he squeezes it, it means he likes you." Carl adds.
"It's neither of you guys' business, anyways." Debbie says as she gets up.
Carl looks at Ada and she shrugs, obviously done with this conversation.
"Carl, do me a favor." Asks Sammi.
"What do I get for it?"
"A favor's supposed to come from the bottom of your heart." Sammi replies.
"You do realize who you're talking to, right?" Carl asks sarcastically.
Sammi sighs and turns to look at Ada and then Carl again. "What if Ada needed a favor, hm? Would you do it only if you got something in return?"
Carl shakes his head and sighs. "Nah, she's my best friend and Chuckie isn't. So what do I get from it?" He asks again, Ada holding in her laugh.
"Take Chuckie under your wing. Make sure the kids don't pick on him, okay?" Sammi begs.
"Nunchucks and a pack of condoms." Carl simply states as Ada laughs.
There's a moment of silence as Sammi processes the conversation. "Okay, fine." She agrees and gets up.
"Magnum." Carl says. "Chuckles, let's go." Him and Ada stand up, ready to go to school and are waiting on Chuckie.
"You seriously don't need magnum, Carl." Ada jokes.
"You wanna see to find out?" He asks.
"Nope. Chuckie, come on!" Ada yells, ready to be done with this conversation.
Frank walks in the door, talking about taking his meds and sleeping on the couch that belongs to him. Everyone simply agrees because anyone would rather hang out with Frank than Sammi. And that says a lot about a person.
Chuckie walks down the stairs as Sammi smiles and goes to hug him, "Have fun, Chuckie!"
And so everyone went. Debbie already left, not wanting to deal with Sammi's bullshit anymore. This leaving Carl, Chuckie, and Ada to all walk to the bus to find there was only a three seater left.
"Ugh, fuck me." Ada mumbles as Carl gets in first and then her. She ideally not wanting to be squished in the middle between two teenage boys. At least she thinks Chuckie's a teenager.
None of them clearly enjoying the seating arrangement, Carl makes more room for Ada so Chuckie isn't drooling - yes, literally - drooling on her shoulder.
The bus to the school took an eternity for the kids, but they did finally make it. Ada quickly grabs Chuckie to get him up so they can all go out the door.
"Chuckie, walk faster, please." Ada begs as the boy takes his time to the front door.
Carl had enough with this, only not ditching the boy for his nunchucks and condoms. He grabs Chuckie's backpack and pulls him to the door. "Hurry the fuck up."
The teens all walk towards the stairway of the school when Carl says, "I'm going to class. See you." As Chuckie gets worried.
"Mom said you'd take me under your wing." Chuckie says.
"Doesn't mean I was telling the truth."
"Carl!" Ada says. "A deal is a deal, Chuckie isn't that much of a handful."
Chuckie suddenly clutches his stomach, in pain. "Argh!"
"What's wrong?" Ada asks worried.
"Ow, my stomach." Chuckie replies.
"This a scam?" Carl asks, annoyed.
Chuckie shakes his head.
"You're really gonna shit your pants?"
Chuckie nods. "I did a little."
"Oh my god." Ada says as she walks towards the short boy, bending down to his height. "Chuckie, you gotta go to the bathroom when you feel like that." She says as she teaches him the obvious. "I can show you where that is."
Carl just shakes his head as he grabs Ada's arm to pick her back up, he walks towards Chuckie and says, "No just- whatever, you see those kids over there?" Chuckie nods. "You're gonna go push into them."
"Carl, I don't think-" Ada starts when Carl literally pushes his nephew into the guy, landing him in deep trouble.
"Watch what you're doing, fuckwad!" The boy yells, throwing Chuckie's books to the ground as Chuckie goes down to grab it, earning a kick to his ass.
"What's the matter, asshead?" The boy snarks. "You lose your balance?"
Then Carl comes up against the boy, pushing him onto the ground as everyone laughs. Carl grabs him by his shirt and states, "If you ever pick on asshead again, I'm going to chew your nuts off with my teeth" He then takes a second to think about that statement as Ada cringes. "And not in a gay way." Shrugging the boy to the ground. "You too, spread the word."
Carl rolls his eyes as Chuckie gets up and smiles, "That was awesome!"
"You owe me. You're my slave now. When I text you, you run."
Ada walks up to the two boys and has a confused look on her face as she turns to Carl, "Slave, really?" Earning a glance from the boy.
"Okay, Uncle Carl and Aunt Ada."
Ada and Carl pause and turn to give each other an embarrassed glance, "Chuckie, just go to class." Ada says, pointing the boy in the other direction.
Boys. She thought.
Ada and Carl weren't in the same grade, he was repeating the sixth grade..for the third time. Today was the first day of high school, she just wished she could experience it with Carl. Which could happen if he passed this year with A's and can go back to his original grade, but everyone knew that wasn't likely. So the friends waved each other goodbye, leaving to go to separate classrooms. Knowing they'll meet up again after school.
Ada was in the third period two hours later. AP HISTORY. She worked her ass off for AP classes, she got in them all, expect math because she fucking sucked at math.
Ada barely knew anyone in the class so when the teacher announces that he's making seating arrangements and every kid was upset, she secretly wasn't.
She got paired off with this girl named Haley. Haley seemed pretty chill, Ada was happy to sit near anyone but Noah. She fucking hated that boy.
"Hi." Haley says. "I'm Haley, I'm new."
Ada gives the girl a warm smile. "I'm Ada. Why'd you move?'
"Parents got in a car crash, kinda got poor from all the medical bills."
Ada sighs, "I'm really sorry, that seems shitty."
Haley agrees. "Yep, it totally is. Used to live in Philly and now I'm, well-"
"Living in the Southside?"
"Yep." Haley says as the girls laugh. "Hey, uh I don't really have any friends cause I'm new, do you wanna be?
"Of course! Yeah, you seem cool." Ada smiles in what seems to be the first time in days.
"Great."
And just like that, that quickly, both girls earned a new friend.
The time was now 2:45 and the students were let out. Carl and Chuckie were waiting on Ada to walk out the door.
Ada and Haley said their goodbyes, exchanging their Instagrams and phone numbers, promising they'll call each other later.
Ada walks out the front door of the school to find Carl and Chuckie already there.
"Hey, boys." Ada greets.
"Hi."
"Hi, Aunt Ada!"
Frank runs up to the trio, "Chuckie, Ada, son, I need a favor. Give me your phone. Come here, sit down." Carl hands the old man his phone. "Thanks, thanks, thanks. Here, take that off and sit down right here. Here you go, take this." Handing Chuckie cotton candy.
Frank instructs Ada and Carl to sit next to him as he pulls out Carl's phone.
"This day keeps getting better!" Chuckie shouts trying to eat the cotton candy.
"Hey, kid!" Frank yells out to a girl passing by. "Take our picture, will you?" The girl nods as she positions the phone the five people. "Here. Okay, nice and tight. Carl and Ada, hold hands and smile."
"No way." Carl says with a fake smile gesturing towards the camera as Ada does the same.
The girl takes their photo and hands the phone towards Frank and walks away, he looks down at the photo and says, "Well, she's no Herb Ritts, but it'll do. Send that to Sammi. Give me that." Frank instructs Carl as he takes the slushie and cotton candy. "Text her, say you're having the best day you ever had in your life with your old man whom you love so much." And just like that, Frank was gone.
"I'll never understand him." Ada admits.
"Me either." Carl says back, agreeing.
Ada was happy going to school that day, she would usually never say that but after the whole coke incident, she needed something to take her mind off it. School would do that. And it did up until it closed for the day. Ada wanted to tell someone, but no one really knew how bad her father could be to her. They knew about the drugs and alcohol and that he had a short temper, but no one thought he would beat and make his only daughter snort coke.
If she told a counselor, CPS would be called and she would be out of the Southside, away from the Gallaghers. If she told Fiona, Fiona would force her to move in at the house fulltime and she couldn't do that. She couldn't be another mouth for Fiona to feed. Hell, if she told any Gallagher (except Frank,) they would all force her to move in with them. And she definitely couldn't tell Carl, she couldn't force him to have knowledge on what goes on inside that house. She knew he cared about her too much for him to let her spend one more second inside Harold Jameson's house if he ever found out.
And cocaine and Gallagher don't really do well anyways since the whole Fiona and Liam incident, one year prior.
As far as Adalaide Jameson knew, this was a secret she'd take to her grave.
By the time everyone got back to the Gallagher house, Debbie was off the rough. She kept talking about how Derek kissed and how it felt, Carl wanted to ram his head through the wall.
"I painted this and no one made fun of me." Chuckie said, holding a shitty looking drawing.
"Oh, Chuckie. I'm so glad you're finally happy at your new school!" Sammi says, bringing dinner to the table.
"And Uncle Carl made me his slave!"
"What?"
Ada and Carl by now had walked into the kitchen,
