Chapter 11:

A couple of weeks later

"Why-do-they-have-to-make-us-run-so-much?" I ask, gasping. Quinn, panting, runs up next to me on the side of the field for a rest. This was the first time I had been in PE since my leg had just healed. "Girls? Keep on running! One more lap for you 2!" the coach called. I call breathily back, "Yep, we're going!" We walk back onto the track. "Race you?" says Sophie, running up to us. I look at Quinn, and she says, "Sure! 3.... 2...." but Sophie races off at 2. "Sophie!" I yell, and race after her. But halfway through the lap, I find that I can't breathe. Like seriously. I slow down, hoping that's just because I was running too fast. Quinn stops next to me. "Willow? You ok?" she asks. "I-can't-breathe" I force out. And then, for the 3rd time in 2 months, my world goes black.

Quinn's POV

Crap. Willow's just fainted or something. "Coach!" I yell. A small crowd has formed around me and unconscious Willa. The coach comes up, takes one look at Willow, and tersely says, "Somebody call 911. Quickly." Phones come out of gym bags, and someone manages to call 911. The paramedics are there in minutes and rush her away.

The coach is trying to call her family and picks up her adoptive mom. "Is this Jessica Keenan Wynn?" he asks. Sophie and Harper gasp. "Is that her mom?" they say in sync. "She never told us," Harper says. "Ok," I say, "That's cool and all, but are you forgetting that our friend is in the hospital right now? We don't know what's wrong, and it could be bad, so can you stop fangirling over her parents and actually worry about her?" "Geez Quinn, I still am worried about her, that just caught me by surprise," Harper says. Sophie sighs, and says, to my horror, says, "I also am worried. If I wasn't straight, I'd like Willow. She seems really nice and actually really pretty as well." Offhandedly, I say, "Yeah, she's kinda cute. Really nice and sweet also." Harper's eyes widen. "Quinn Paisley Brooks, do you have a crush?" he asks. "W-what?" I stammer. "N-No I don't!" Harper laughs. "You're lying. I am your resident gay friend, so I have a sixth sense of helping everyone else find their soulmate." "Shut up," I say. "You have a crush on her!" Harper says. "Don't say that out loud!" I say quickly. "Anyways, we have more important things to worry about."

Willow's POV

I wake up in the hospital. For like the 3rd time this year. "What happened?" I mutter. Jess is sitting next to me. "Willa, you fainted at P.E.," she says, laying a hand gently on my cheek. "Oh. Do you know why?" I ask. Jess shakes her head sadly. "No, Mandi, I don't. Is it ok if I call you Mandi as well? For your middle name. But the doctors think you have astma." "Mandi's fine." I say. Could I have asthma? I've been in P.E before, in different schools, but I always walked laps and no one said anything about it. Occanisonly I would run, but not fast. The doctors come back into the room and confirm my guess. "We have discovered that Miss Willow has astma. So you will need to have this inhaler with you at all times. For her, dangerous attacks happen when she exserises strenusly, so here is a medical note to give to your PE teacher." I take the note and hand it to Jess. "You are discharged." the doctor says, and leaves.
