Chapter 24: This Was My Final Chance
2 weeks later:
Willow's POV:
I'm watching the news when a report comes on. "Quinn Lila Brooks has been found dead." "What?" I yell., along with the whole cast of Heathers. "Brooks was on the run for many months, after she and Kenzie Rowan Bennett killed their fellow classmates last year. She was found dead by police. The cause of death was presumed to be lung cancer. She was also found with a phone, which she had used to hack into Willow Amanda Keenan-Wynn's social media accounts. Everyone looks at me. I'm just in shock. Should I feel bad? She was a monster. She killed some of my best friends. But she died. Shouldn't you feel bad when someone dies? But the news broadcast has moved on. So, putting my existential crisis, I realize that everyone I know watches this news channel, so I can apologize to Sophie next school year. That is, if she'll make eye contact with me, and hasn't died from being homeless. Khloe told me that she's moved in with Kennedy's family though. The news blares again, and I look up, just in time to catch the next report.
"Scientests have found a new strain of virus in China. The new virus, called Covid-19, has already ravaged towns and villages. It is extremly deadly. Scientests are currently trying to stop the spread, and find out the start of the new virius." The kids must look pretty concerned, cause Barrett smiles reassuringly, and says, "Dont worry. It'll never reach us. It's across the globe. It can't be that bad. Don't worry."
6 months later:
Don't worry. It'll never reach us. Barrett said.
But she's dead now. And now Elle and Ryan are in the hospital, struggling for every breath. We're not even allowed to visit them. We're just waiting at home. Waiting for them to die. I've given up on hope. I'm just drowning in despair right now. I just hope no more of us will get it. But dreams, as I've learned, never come true when you most need them to.
5 months later:
Elle dead. Ryan dead. Jon dead. Katie dead. Alice dead. Libby and Cat dead, having come home from college, catching the virus on the plane back. The virus has gotten worse and worse. All the news reports are on how the economy is failing, thousands of people dying per day, record-high unemployment, restaurants closing. Now, Jessica. She's snatched up the last bed, but she doesn't have a ventilator. Hospitals are overflowing with Covid patients. They're miles overcapacity. I beg to be able to see her. "She's my mother!" I scream, sobbing. They let me in eventually, but it's too late. She's dead 20 minutes after I'm let in. The last thing she said was, "I love you."
Then, another blow. Sophie's wheeled in, taking the place of Jess. Last words. "I'm sorry. I love you."
When I start to feel sick, I don't make any attempt to try and get better. Almost everyone I love is gone. Time for me to join them.
Goodbye.
