Carrying her mother into the the field, Becca sets her down in the tall grass. The once beautiful farm they lived on before, desolate and empty. Dead.
As gently as she can Becca lowers her mother into the ground. The woman she remembered was gone, but the memories from before still linger.
Her mother yelling for her to come in at dinner, her mother cutting the crusts from her sandwich, her mother giving the school a piece of her mind when she found out Becca was being bullied.
Sighing, a tear falling down her dirt streaked face she shovels the dirt back into the grave. Covering the shell of what was her mother.
When she's finished she walks back to the house, throwing the shovel into the garage with a clank. The house is silent. No Sebastian. No mother. No father. It was then that she truly realised she was alone. She had no one else in this world, and that made it up to her to take care of herself.
That night she packs a bag, nothing more than a change of clothes and some food and water. She walks away from the farm without looking back. Occasionally catching a ride, she finally gets to New York. By then, with her food gone, she cuddles in an ally. Rain pouring down from the starry night sky. Her bag in her arms, it gets soaked anyway.
A man walks down the alley, her body tenses. No pepper spray, nothing more than a bag to hit him with. Scenario after scenario comes into her head of how to get out if she needs to. Each one ends with her not escaping. How can she? She hasn't eaten in days, she has no strength left even if she did manage to get away and run.
Instead, he pops an umbrella and offers her his hand. For a second she hesitates, who- but when he looks at her she sees nothing but kindness on his face.
Shakilly, she reaches out her hand and takes his. He pulls her from the ground, and makes sure the umbrella is covering her. They walk for ten minutes, the area getting nicer and nicer as they go. Finally, the man stops at the side entrance of a fancy looking restaurant. He opens the door for her and together they walk in. In front of her is a kitchen, complete with steam and yelling staff. To the side is the restaurant, the sound of classical music playing over speakers softly reaching her ears.
Gently, he tugs her arm and they walk up a staircase. When they get to the top there's a long hallway, with several doors. Becca follows the man down the hallway, and opens the last door with a key. Inside is an office. A man sits in the middle of the big room, windows behind him. He briefly looks up from what he's doing on his expensive looking desk.
"Harvey." He greets with a nod to the man beside her.
Becca doesn't expect the gravely, voice of the kind older man beside her. Everything about him is kind, everything but his voice. Maybe that's why he hasn't spoken to her. Or maybe he just doesn't care.
The man finishes writing at his desk, and stands. Walking over, he circles Becca. People looking at her never really bothered her, she went to highschool after all. It always felt like eyes were watching her every move. This time though, she wanted nothing more than to shrink away from the man in the nice suit circling her.
Finally, he stops in front of her. His look harsh, until he smiles. Surprisingly a warm smile, concerning how cold and calculating he seems to be. He holds out his hand. She pauses for a minute completely unsure of what's happening. She takes his hand, and he raises it to his lips giving her hand a kiss. When he lets it go, she looks to the man, Harvey, next to her. When his eyes meet hers he gives her a small smile. Attempting reassurance. Suddenly, following a man didn't seem like such a great idea. When her stomach growls though, she takes all of it back. She needs some food.
