"I can't believe that I am finally gonna meet him!" Ryan squealed. Ryan Evans was your best friend, you guys were inseparable. You moved in next to her in eighth grade and have been friends ever since. She was the only person who was able to break your bubble.
After losing your father, having many step-fathers and a workaholic mom did a number on you at a young age, always having to move, never really staying long enough to finish a semester, let alone make a friend. But moving to Boston and meeting her changed that. Because after moving in next to the Evans, your mom decided that she would take a break from men and focus mainly on you and her work. Which meant you were allowed to be friends with Ryan for more than just 2 months.
Fast forward 11 years now here you were, both living together in the big apple. But back to the moment, you both were sitting at a local coffee shop, waiting to meet her father, her biological father.
Ryan's mother, Hayley, got pregnant when she was just 21, from her then-boyfriend Sebastian. But after he found out that she was pregnant he left her, said that he wasn't ready for the responsibility. Why make a mistake, if you don't want to deal with the consequences?
But after 24 years, a few weeks ago he resurfaced and all of a sudden wanted to be a part of her life. Said he made a big mistake leaving her mom then and wanted to be involved now. Utter Bullshit according to you but Ryan was excited to see him and begged you to come with, so here you were waiting for over 20 minutes for him.
"Are you sure he is coming?" You asked impatiently, checking your phone.
"Yeah, he may be running late," Ryan tried to reason, but the longer he took, the nervous she grew. "How will he react?" She asked timidly.
You sighed and looked at her, she was fidgeting with her ring, her sign of nervousness. It was weird seeing her like this, normally you were the nervous wreck, and she would be calm and collected one, trying to soothe you, but now it was the exact opposite. Knowing that this wasn't her natural state, you tried to reason with her.
"I think he will be mindblown... And guilty, I mean look at you, this amazing, hot," You smirked, "beautiful young woman and he missed the chance to see you grow up, missed being a part of your journey to success. I think he might be a bit jealous too." You encouraged her.
Why was she nervous anyway? Ryan was one of the most successful artists in America, having multiple galleries in most major cities. But here she was, a nervous wreck over someone who didn't want her until a month ago.
"Ha! Alright," She waved you off.
"I am serious Ry. I know how much this means to you but I still have a bad feeling about this. To start, he was the one who called you for this meet-up, yet he is still over 30 mins late. And don't even get me started with the fact that he is 24 years late in-"
But before you could finish a low raspy voice interrupted you. "Hey!"
Ry's face lit up as she looked up at something above you. You look at her confused before following her gaze.
You sat up and turned around first seeing his feet, a pair of worn-out white Air Forces, what couldn't afford to even wear a clean pair of shoes? A pair of blue skinny jeans, what are you? 21, to wear skinny jeans? A loose plain black tee, a black leather jacket, and a black baseball hat. how formal?
He was a pretty well-built man, broad shoulder, 6 feet, looks pretty muscular ever with the loose clothing. Then his face, something about it seem familiar. The soft fluffy brown curls, a firm jawline, the subtle rough beard, thin slightly chapped pink lips, the visible wrinkle lines on his forehead, his ears slightly peaking out of his hair, a clean set of pearly whites, and a set of ocean blue eyes that pierced through you. You scrunched your face trying to recall where you remember him from. Those piercing blue eyes, I have definitely seen them before, you thought.
"Almina?" Ry called out, pulling you out of your thoughts.
"Huh?" You shook your head and turned to her, "Yeah, um," You turned back to him seeing him smirk down at you, before looking back at Ry.
"I am sorry, I am late, I-I" He stuttered walking to Ryan and hugging her.
"No, it's okay we actually came a few minutes ago, though we were late." She laughed it off. You had to physically stop yourself from rolling your eyes out of your sockets, a few minutes ago? Bitch we been sitting outside for 40 mins now!
"Wow! You look so good!" He exclaimed pulling back from the hug. "I see you got your mother's genes." He smiled, again with the soppiness.
"Take a seat, please! Did you walk here?" She asked, sitting back, seeing him a bit out of breath.
"Yeah, you look exhausted." You snickered, making Ryan dart her eyes at you.
He just laughed it off and continues to look at Ryan, "I take it you're not huge of me?" He asked you directly.
"Yea-"
"No, it's just she is very protective of me, that's it." Ryan interrupted.
"Sure, that too," You smiled, going back to your phone.
The rest of the time there was spent with Ryan and Sebastian talking about what they were like and their interests, while you just awkwardly sat there, trying not to gag at how fake they sounded or at least that what you thought. Even though you tried to avoid the question, it still rang an alarm in your head.
"Where have I seen him before?"
"All right, guys! This was really fun, but I have to get to work now." He excused himself standing up.
"Oh," Ryan's face dropped. "Um, yeah it was." She tried to smile back.
"Hey!" He called out. "We should do this more often. I would love to see you more!" He smiled pulling in for another hug and kissing her forehead, making her all flustered and red.
"Maybe, next time I don't have to come," You said under your breath but unlucky for you they heard you.
"Al!" Ryan called out, kicking your shine, making you wince in pain. This woman was a soccer player, of course, it would hurt.
"Sorry I didn't mean to say it like that. Maybe I don't come the next time so it's just the two of you. You know, no need for me to make this awkward." You shrugged your shoulder.
"Oh, there is nothing awkward about this." He pitched in.
"Yeah, okay!" You laughed, "Anyway, I know she has a client meeting in a few minutes and I am sure you have places to be, so I guess this is goodbye," You said, getting up and collecting your things, and pulling your grey jacket over your shoulders.
"Clients?" He asked looking back at her.
"Yeah," She blushed, "I own a gallery downtown, and um, we're having a show in a week, so gotta get the clients and artists all set before that." She smiled. "Wait, you should come and check it out!" She blurted, "If you're free that is?" She looked down.
"I um-"
"I am sure he can make time for his daughter's show," You pitched in, challenging him, let's see how you will react you that.
He looked you up and down before looking back at Ryan, "You know what just text the place and time and I will make it," He smiled at her. He hugged her one last time, staring at you while doing so, his smile looked innocent, but those eyes, those eyes gave a far from innocent look.
"I will see you next week, then?" He smiled pulling back.
"Yeah," She grinned. He looked back at you and walked around the chair to you, pulling you into a hug.
"I hope to see you too, Almina!" He muttered into your ear as he pulled away, his gruff voice sent shivers down your spine.
