Sasha drops her cheer and school bags to the floor as she stumbles into her room. She then falls flat unto her bed and takes of her shoes with her feet. Her day has been long to say the least.
The day began promising. She did the ISS training hours in the morning before heading to school like always. Agent Knight swung by during this time to announce her next mission. They are usually withing the national territory. Therefore, when she heard that it will be in France, she was completely exited.
She has a few new gadgets she wants to test, and this is the perfect opportunity. She had felt the tingly sensation that always comes right before heading into action. It will be hard to slip away from the school trip, but that only adds to the challenge.
She arrived at school in this optimistic cloud, only for it to dissipate moments later. During first period, she received a text from Stacy, one of the other cheerleaders, with a photo of Ryan and Julia all cozy in his car.
Either way, she confronted Ryan afterwards and it turned ugly. She got so frustrated with his attitude that she almost slipped about her double life. Good thing, she managed to focus the conversation on him.
She ended up in the bathroom silently crying. She had sincerely liked him, at least at the beginning. Then, her missions started to get in the way, per usual, and they started drifting apart. Just thinking about him cheating on her and then grabbing her the way he did made her sad tears turn into angry ones.
If she was honest with herself, she also felt a little relieved when they broke up. She didn't like his bad temper and possessive nature. But she had sticked to it because it was comfortable and expected by her peers.
By lunch, the tale had spread throughout the whole school, and she had to do damage control. Her thoughtfully crafted reputation of drama queen had to stay intact. Luckily, cheerleading practice was intense giving her the opportunity to vent out her emotions and her mood improved.
However, after practice, she saw Kiara Starling arguing with Ryan. Her instincts told her that whatever they were discussing, she was involved somehow. Kiara's stare followed by Ryan's guilty glimpse had confirmed it. Sasha still doesn't know what to feel about it.
Kiara undoubtedly knows exactly what happened between Ryan and her. Sasha is unaware of how Kiara does it, but somehow, she always figures out everything that happens at school before gossip spreads it. It frustrates Sasha to no end, because she must be careful around her. Kiara keeps her on her toes, and she hates it.
To make matters worse, Kiara put Ryan on his place. Don't get her wrong, she was secretly glad, but the fact that Starling was responsible worries her. It made Sasha feel as if her former friend still had her back and that wasn't part of the plan.
Sasha shakes her head. She grabs her laptop and focuses on the file for the France mission. After analyzing the riddle for a while and getting nowhere, she memorizes it and continues reading. Riddles have never been her strongest area. She prefers straight facts. Luckily for her, she doesn't receive one every time the goes on a mission. This must be one of the first missions for someone in the team. Hopefully, he or she won't be too nervous and will be willing to test her gadgets.
Her first teammate is William Hunter. They've been on two missions together. He is a good guy, brilliant strategist and a wiz with computers. They make a good team. If they stayed in contact more often, they would probably be friends. Nothing more, he is not her type. She reviews his information but passes to her last teammate fast since it hasn't changed much. Agent Hunter's video file disappears, and a picture of Kiara Starling replaces it.
"What the-" Sasha mumbles as her face turns white. She presses play in a haze.
"Kiara Victoria Starling," the voice in the video starts, "age 17, was born in Los Angeles, United, States. She is 5 feet and 4 inches tall. She is currently a junior student at Crystal High School, vice president of Crystal High's Student Council and graduate of the Karate Institute of Los Angeles."
Sasha is mildly impressed about Kiara's progress in martial arts.
"She is fluent in English, Spanish, French and German. Her specialty lays in hand-to-hand and kabudo weapons combat and surveillance. She was recruited on April, 18th 2014 and has been an active ISS Agent since June 6th, 2014 with neither successfully completed nor failed missions."
Sasha memorizes the file, though she knows most of it already, and watches as the program deletes itself. Dred and frustration fill her up as her initial shock disappears. She has done and sacrificed so much ... all for nothing. Unless ... a plan forms in Sasha's mind. She is not someone to give up so easily. She will do what it takes even if she will not enjoy it.
