Teen Spy: The Observer

Chapter 13

Kiara's hopes are made reality when she has a second chance in the simulator. This time her team had a better coordination. They perfected her initial plan and it allowed them to win. Agent Frost was a difficult opponent, but this time they were prepared. 

After training, she heads back home. By the time she arrives, Kiara patiently waits until after dinner with superficial chatter to distract her. Not that it worked, but she tries to act normal around her family. Once finished, she locks herself in her room and searches for her mission's file.

She powers her computer on. The file is there in the desktop waiting for her. Taking a deep breath, she settles her nerves. Just as Agent Knight told her, it asks for a password and gives her a clue. She immediately recognizes it and types the answer. The file opens and a program starts running. The screen of her computer goes white and black bold words appear:

ON JUNE 11TH YOU WILL HEAD TO THE FOLLOWING MEETING POINT WHERE AT 1400 HOURS THE TEAM WILL BE DEBRIEFED BY AGENT CARVILLE.

THE MEETING POINT WILL BE IN:

"A PLACE REGULARLY PLOUGHED,

A HALL OF REFLECTION WITH A HIDDEN COURSE,

BEHIND YOUR LIKENESS, FIFTH IN ROW,

ONLY WHEN TOUCHING THE LIPS OF THE ONE EXPOSED"

Kiara writes down the riddle in a piece of paper, noticing that there are 5 letters in italics. Could be an anagram... After reading the riddle again to check that she wrote it correctly, she puts the paper down and decides to return to it later.

Kiara presses the "Enter" button and the text disappears. Pressing it again, a picture appears in the middle of the screen. It shows a boy with . In the picture, he appears from the shoulders up.

After memorizing his face, Kiara clicks on the play button. More photos and footage of this person training and in his day-to-day life start to appear and then a voice speaks. Kiara quickly pauses it, startled and connects her headphones. Then she continues watching the video:

"William Hunter, age 17, was born in Manchester, England. He's 5 feet and 10 inches tall. He is currently junior student of Wood High School, plays in the fly-half position and is captain of the Wood High's Rugby Team."

"William Hunter" Kiara mumbles his name. Some part of her brain registers the fact that her teammate is quite handsome. However, she'll reserve judgement until meeting him in person and getting to know him. After all, looks can be deceiving.

Right now, Kiara is more focused on remembering everything and having a good start on the mission than developing a crush on one of her teammates. So, she pushes those thoughts to the back of her mind to ponder later.

"He speaks English, German, Russian and Hindi." The voice explains. "And specializes in computer programing, decoding and strategies. He was recruited on April 15th, 2009 and has been an active ISS Agent since June 30th, 2011, with 14 successfully completed missions and 0 failed."

Kiara is impressed with his statistics. He must be really good. Kiara thinks a part of her excited to be part of his team, but another part of her feels nervous at being the rookie. Hopefully my other team member doesn't have that much experience.

When she memorizes Agent Hunter's information, she passes to the next one, set on committing it to memory as well. The screen shows a girl .

However, Kiara doesn't need the information in the video to know exactly who this girl is. Her eagerness dims and disbelief replaces it. She can recognize those eyes and that smirk anywhere, because her second teammate is none other than Sasha McGreevy.

The first thought that crosses through Kiara's mind is that she must have confused the girl with Sasha.

There is no way that Sasha McGreevy is a spy. It's just not possible. Sasha would never stay incognito. She lives for attention.

With that in mind, Kiara presses play, only to prove herself wrong.

"Sasha Anne McGreevy, age 17, was born in San Diego, United States. She is 5 feet and 5 inches tall. She is currently a junior student at Crystal High School and Head Cheerleader of the Crystal High's Cheer Squad."

Kiara feels like cursing but restrains herself.

"She is fluent in English, German, Mandarin and Arab, and specializes in mechanics, chemistry, disguise and concealment. She was recruited on July 10th, 2009 and has been an active ISS Agent since July 7th, 2011. During this time, she has successfully completed 17 missions and failed once."

Kiara's mouth hangs open in shock. She replays the video one more time, just in case she hallucinated it. But it shows the same thing. It's information slowly cements in her mind. When she video finishes and the program deletes itself, Kiara can only stare at the screen. Her mind flying through memory lane.

Sasha became an active agent around the same time their friendship ended. Could those two events be related? Kiara can't help wondering. Even though she lost hope of ever mending things with Sasha, she has always felt cheated of an explanation. This could potentially fill in some of her questions.

Then again, Sasha spent the previous two years training in secret and Kiara never suspected a thing. Clearly, I never knew her as well as I though. This experience obviously changed her, and she could have just outgrown their friendship. But that still doesn't justify Sasha's horrible attitude.

Thought that pales in comparison with Kiara's main concern. The question now is how will she ever work with someone that loathes her, in a country she has never been to and still complete the mission successfully?
