Chap.1: a falling feather
Serenity, for Camila, meant time alone with nothing but the feel of aging paper under her fingers and a pool of words for her to drink in. Though currently, her lack of sleep was weighing down on her, a yawn leaving her lips. She put her copy of To Kill a Mockingbird aside, getting up from her bed to stretch her, up until now, idle limbs. Her eyes drew in the merging sunset colors coming from her window, inviting her to step closer to catch a better glimpse. She adores the way orange mixes with yellow and yellow with pink and all of them with the baby blue.
She spends a few seconds just adoring the hope that the sky offers (she likes to believe), just for her. Right as she's about to turn away, a falling feather catches her attention, swaying from side to side as it soundlessly lands on the ground. The second time she tries to turn away, something else catches her attention.
A black-haired girl is now reaching down to pick up the feather and Camila watches as she lays it gently on her palm. Camila is enthralled by the scene, though she's not sure why. Her eyes notice a red suitcase stood next to the girl, who is now running her fingers over the feather. It's beautiful, Camila thinks, that someone can appreciate something as simple as a feather. She leans against the wall of her window, wanting to see the girl's face before she leaves. There are cars passing by every few seconds, though Camila doesn't mind the sound, it almost feels like music playing in the background.
Camila doesn't get it, why she's standing just watching a stranger. It probably is creepy, she thinks, but she can't help but want to see the girl's face. Only a few minutes have passed by but Camila feels like it's an agonizing amount of time. She contemplates discreetly knocking on the window to get the girl's attention but her plans are deemed unnecessary as a bird chirps from above her. The noise obviously catching the black-haired girl's attention.
Camila doesn't have time to hide the fact that she's basically been watching the girl, because now the black-haired girl is looking up at Camila, her emerald eyes boring into Camila's own brown ones. She opens her mouth, and she's not sure if it's to clarify she wasn't being creepy (like the girl could even hear her) or the fact that the emerald-eyed girl is more beautiful than words spilled on a page, or the colours of the sunset filling up her room. She's never seen anything like it, or like her. Before she can do anything else (like awkwardly smile at the girl as if to say hey I totally wasn't watching you from my window), a voice calls out from behind the green-eyed girl, causing both girls to follow the sound. Camila figures it's her name, and she appreciates the information because she really thinks Lauren suits her.
A bulky man, struggling with two large suitcases on each arm, comes into view. Oh, they must be the new neighbors moving in, Camila realizes. She watches him exchange a few words with Lauren before disappearing into the house. Lauren prepares to do the same, grabbing the handle of her suitcase again and Camila almost (stupidly) reaches out as if to stop her. Right on cue, just because the universe hates Camila, Lauren looks back up, her gaze intense yet gentle. They share a few seconds of staring (and now Camila feels even weirder because she literally hasn't taken her eyes off Lauren) before Lauren offers her a small smile, walking into the house, the feather still in her hand.
Camila lets out a breath she didn't know she was holding, drawing her curtains and crawling back into her bed. She closes her eyes, and watches the emerald eyes appearing in the darkness. She thinks about why Lauren kept the feather, or why Lauren smiled up at her despite her weird behavior or why Lauren has to be just about the most beautiful thing Camila has laid eyes on. It's not too long before her tiredness and her thoughts about Lauren lull her to sleep.
