It was January 2016. The album, Reflection, had run its course, and it was time for Fifth Harmony to renew their contract with Epic before starting their second LP. All of the ladies were sure that their record label would keep them considering that Reflection debuted at #1 on iTunes and #5 on Billboard. Plus, three of the singles off the album have already gone gold, and most of the shows for the Reflection Tour sold out.
Ally, Lauren, Dinah, Normani, and Camila all filed into a conference room at Epic headquarters. Sitting there were L.A. Reid, Simon Cowell, their manager, and some unknown execs. The ladies all sat down at the table eager to find out what kind of new deal they were getting.
Simon started off the meeting, "Ladies, I am not going to draw this out. I'm afraid I have some heartbreaking news to give you. After much deliberation, number crunching, and market research, Epic and Syco have decided that it would be best to end our relationship with Fifth Harmony."
All of the group members sat there shocked. "We're being dropped from the label?" Ally asked.
L.A. Reid answered, "Yes, that is what is happening. This was an incredibly difficult decision to make. You all are so talented and such good people..."
"But, our album debuted at #1 in dozens of countries," Camila interrupted.
One of the unknown execs chimed in, "The label has lost a lot of money on your projects. You might have debuted at #1 momentarily, but the overall album and singles sales were not enough to cover what we've spent on you for travel, production, songwriting, stylists, makeup artists, musicians, etc. You have to understand that we are a business. We just do not foresee us profiting off of your act anytime soon if ever."
"Ladies, I really like you and had high hopes," said Simon with a sad look on his face. "I really thought you had the potential to become the female version of One Direction, but that process is happening much more slowly than the label and my management company can afford. I can assure you that I will use all of my contacts to help you shop for another label if that is what you all want to do."
"I think we need some time to process all of this. I'm sure we're all in a state of shock right now. I know I am," Lauren responded.
"Understood," Simon replied. At that, all of Fifth Harmony filed out of the conference room with tears in their eyes unsure of their future.
