“How is my next Ariana Grande?”
“Hey, L.A.” It was April 2016, and Camila was close to finishing her album. Meghan Trainor, Katy Perry, Charli XCX, Kesha, and Sia had written songs for her. Stargate, Max Martin, Benny Blanco, and Dr. Luke had produced the tracks.
L.A. sat down next to Camila, “I have a surprise songwriter for you. She doesn’t really write for other people, but she really wanted to work with you. Come on in!”
A tall, slim blonde walked through the door. “Taylor!” Camila ran over to Taylor Swift and hugged her.
“When I found out you were doing a solo project, I really wanted to work with you, but didn’t have the time. I hope you have room for more tracks; that’s if you like them,” said Taylor.
Camila jumped up and down, “I would love to hear them.”
L.A. Reid had taken off, and Taylor and Camila were listening to demos. “How have you been? Have you talked to them lately?” Taylor asked.
“No...I mean I ran into Lauren, and that didn’t go well at all. She’s completely disowned me. After that, I was too afraid to talk to the rest of them. I know they all hate me,” Camila let out a sigh.
Taylor countered, “I’m sure they will forgive you if they haven’t already. You didn’t even do anything wrong. You were 15 and did what your parents told you to do.”
“I feel like four of my family members died,” Camila was starting to choke up.
Taylor reached over to comfort Camila, “Don’t let it continue to get you down. It’ll all work out in the end.”
In the meantime, Normani, Dinah, and Lauren were walking into a studio in New York. Rich Dollaz was already sitting inside with two other men. “Ladies, this is Stevie J. He’s going to be the executive producer of your album. This midget right here is Yung Berg; he’s helping him.” Stevie J nodded his head to acknowledge them; Yung Berg gave Rich Dollaz a dirty look and turned to smile at the women.
“How’s Joseline?” Dinah inquired excitedly.
Stevie J replied, “She’s still crazy.” Everyone in the room laughed.
Rich Dollaz went on, “Let’s get some other business out of the way first. Have you picked a name yet?”
Dinah chimed in, “We were thinking about Laurminah.”
“What’s a Laurminah?” Rich Dollaz questioned.
“It’s our names combined,” answered Dinah.
“That sounds like a pill for erectile dysfunction. Pick something else.”
Normani entered the conversation, “We were thinking about LDN.”
Rich Dollaz let out a breath, “That….is….boring. We’ll go with that for now. TLC did alright with their boring name. Alright, now on to music.” He pointed to Stevie J.
“We got a lot of demos for you to listen to. Some of these songwriters and producers are a little throwback, but they are still putting out hot stuff. For the songwriters, we have Christina Milian, Ashanti, Ester Dean, Missy Elliott, Ne-Yo, The-Dream, and Sevyn Streeter. For the producers, we have Jermaine Dupri, Timbaland, Dr. Dre, Mike Will Made It, DJ Mustard, Pharrell, Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins, Bryan-Michael Cox, and The-Dream is producing too. What do you think?”
“Oh, my god! Darkchild, Ne-Yo, and The-Dream produced songs for Beyonce!” Normani could hardly contain herself.
Stevie J added, “There ain’t gonna be any pop on this album except for maybe urban pop. This album is going to be mostly straight up R&B with some hip hop-influenced tracks. Are you alright with that?”
“Yes! Thank god! No more bubblegum pop,” Lauren responded. Dinah and Normani both high fived Lauren. “AMEN!”
Rich Dollaz broke back in, “I have an idea. I heard that Camila is releasing her album sometime in July. I want to get this album done quickly and release a single so that we can release on the same date. This would create all kinds of buzz in the media.”
Dinah scrunched up her face. “I don’t know.”
Normani was having the same feelings. “What if we lose out on the charts? That’ll look bad.”
“I think it’s a great idea,” Lauren confessed. “I’m confident that our album will be better and appeal to adults who actually have money to purchase music.”
“You’re my girl,” beamed Rich Dollaz. “You got that competitor’s spirit, but I understand where you other two are coming from. How about we do this? We will release the album a week after Camila. If it debuted at the number one spot, then we have a chance to knock her off and hold it. Deal?” All of the ladies nodded in agreement. “Good. Stevie. Midget. I’m gonna leave you to it. I got business to attend to.” Rich Dollaz left the studio in a hurry.
They all sat around the controls and started listening to demos. During one of the songs, Yung Berg turned to Normani. “You know, you’re cute for a dark-skinned chick.”
The whole group looked at him with disgust on their faces. Lauren whispered to Normani, “I hope this is all worth it because we’re working with the slimiest men on the planet.”
