Thank you for the 1.2k reads. I didn't think many people would read past the first chapter.
Camila had attended a White House event on immigration where she was a celebrity speaker. While there, she had met John Adkins, the son of a U.S. representative for California. The two clicked immediately. They were both quirky, and Camila liked how he kind of looked like Ryan Gosling. They exchanged numbers; and, a week later, John had called Camila to ask her out on a date. The two were eating on the patio at a restaurant in Los Angeles when, all of a sudden, they heard cameras flashing.
Camila complained, “Oh, god. Not the paparazzi. I am so sorry.”
“It’s okay. As the son of a politician, I’m used to strangers prying into my private life,” laughed John. “How about we wave down a server and ask if we can be seated inside.”
“That sounds like a good idea.”
Ally was too embarrassed to tell anyone what had happened and just stayed in her apartment for a couple of days. She finally decided to call up Normani because she needed someone to talk to. “Mani, are you busy?” Ally said tearfully.
“No. I’m at home on vacation. What’s wrong, Ally?”
“Troy and I b-b-broke up,” cried Ally.
“No way!” said Normani surprised. “You two were meant for each other.”
“He said he’s g-g-g-g…”
“Ally, take a deep breath. What happened?”
Ally followed Normani’s advice and took a few deep breaths trying to regain her composure. “Troy said he’s gay and that he’s known since before we even met.”
Normani almost didn’t know how to respond. “Are you at home?”
“Yes.”
“I’m driving to your house.”
“No, Mani. You don’t have to do that.”
“I’m only three hours away,” Normani stated. “Just give me about an hour to pack my stuff.”
“You’re such a good friend,” sniffled Ally.
Normani replied, “I know you would do the same for me.”
Normani packed a week’s worth of clothing and made the three-hour drive from Houston to San Antonio. When she knocked on Ally’s door, she was greeted cheerfully.
“Hi, Mani!” Ally hugged Normani around her waist.
“Hey, Ally,” said Normani confused by her friend’s mood.
“Come on in! You can put your stuff in my bedroom.”
“Ally, are you okay?” Normani inquired.
“Yeah. I’m over it,” answered Ally.
“Um….never mind.” Normani felt like Ally was acting strange, but didn’t want to push it. “I hope you don’t mind, but Lauren and Dinah will be flying in tomorrow. I told them you and Troy broke up, but I didn’t tell them why. I wasn’t sure you would want everyone to know.”
“Oh, that’s great!” beamed Ally. “We all haven’t hung out in a long time. We should invite Camila.”
“Ally. Stop.”
“Oh, come on!” pleaded Ally. “How many months has it been?”
Normani asserted, “You know that Lauren hates as much as she loves, and she loves HARD. Besides, Camila didn’t even come to your movie premiere. That was rude.”
“Well,” Ally responded, “she was probably afraid of being attacked by Planet Green Eyes.”
“She should be.”
Ally and Normani watched a Disney movie like old times and retired to bed. The next afternoon, they drove to the airport to pick up Lauren. While waiting for Dinah’s plane to arrive, the three women went shopping at the nearby mall. Once Dinah was picked up, they all headed back to Ally’s apartment.
Dinah and Lauren were confused by Ally’s cheerfulness. So Lauren asked, “Is everything okay, ally? Do you want to talk about it?”
“Troy’s gay. There’s nothing else to say. Do you guys want to order a pizza?” Ally piped.
Lauren and Dinah were aghast. Normani interjected, “Sure. Let’s order a couple of pizzas.”
“Alright. Let me go search for some coupons,” reported Ally.
When Ally went to her room to search through her box of coupons in her walk-in closet, Dinah turned to Normani and Lauren. “I know she’s in pain because you said she called you crying. So, why is she acting so weird right now?”
Lauren explained, “Everyone grieves differently.”
“It’s still weird. She just found out her long-time boyfriend is gay. I would still be on the floor bawling,” Dinah opined. Normani and Lauren shrugged.
The pizza had arrived, and the ladies were all sitting in the living room eating while watching t.v. “So, what are your guys’ plans?” started Ally.
“We’re going on tour next month with Tinashe and Jhene Aiko,” Normani proclaimed.
“That’s awesome! I’m so happy for y’all. I kind of miss touring,” Ally confessed. “I’m thinking about auditioning for some plays. That’ll give me a chance to travel.”
Lauren nodded, “That sounds like a good idea. It’ll keep your mind off of things.”
“Keep my mind off of what?” quizzed Ally.
Dinah broke in, “Girl, you know what she’s talking about.”
Normani interrupted, “Hey, let’s watch The Notebook.”
All four of the women spent a couple of more days hanging out and sightseeing in San Antonio before the members of LDN had to take off and prepare for their tour.
Not much happened in this chapter, but it sets up the drama to come.
