*******"If you, the fire ninja, can't make a fire I'm taking that as full permission to mercilessly tease you." Skylor watched with a smirk as Kai tried to balance the pieces of wood against each other.
Kai shot her an annoyed look. "I can make a fire." He said like it was obvious. "I'm from Ignacia, it wasn't exactly modern there."
Skylor raised her hands in surrender. "Alright! If you say so!"
Kai scowled, hunching over as he tried to tuck a piece of crumpled newspaper in between his wood teepee. His fingers accidentally bumped the small build causing it to collapse in on itself.
They were silent for a few moments, just staring at the pathetic pile of sticks. Skylor's shoulders were shaking beside Kai as she tried to hold in her laughter.
Kai pressed his lips together. "Don't." Was all he said.
A snort erupted from Skylor's mouth before she could stop it, causing Kai to wrinkle his nose in annoyance as he tried to right the structure. After a few more attempts Kai had managed to make a decent fire, a little pitiful looking but Skylor chose not to mention that. Kai's pride bruised too easily for Skylor to tease him over one thing for an extended length of time. She needed to save the number of jabs she could make without Kai sulking.
Kai finally stepped back as the flames began to lick at the fuel and sat down beside Skylor on the grass. A proud smile brightened his face as he preened a little at his success. Skylor took the burnt orange blanket she had packed and wrapped it around their shoulders, snuggling in beside her boyfriend as the night crackled with the soothing smell of burnt wood.
"You know, when you said you wanted to go on a camping trip I almost thought you were kidding," Skylor spoke, breaking the silence. Kai raised an eyebrow and shifted so he could face her.
"Really?" Kai said in interest. "Why's that?"
Skylor shrugged but her eyes sparkled with a hidden joke. "You don't always seem the type to rough-it."
Kai gasped dramatically, a hand flew over his heart as he gave her a wounded look. "What do you mean?"
"Babe, do you know how much hair gel is in my medicine cabinet right now?" Skylor challenged him with a look.
The answer:
Waaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much!
Kai held her gaze. "You grew up in a mansion with servants getting you everything whereas I lived in a blacksmith's stall. Which sounds more likely to be a glamper?"
"Glamper?" Skylor's lips turned up. "What does that mean?"
Kai flushed, glaring at her with squinted amber eyes. "You're focusing on the wrong thing!"
Skylor laughed, unaffected by his temper as she laid her head on his shoulder and looked up at him. He remained unamused, frowning down at her with a pouty lip. "I love you even if you know fancy terms like glamping." She told him.
"It's not fancy-"
Skylor cut him off by using the best trick she knew: Planting a peck on his nose. Kai's argument cut off into a strangled noise as his face dusted pink and his eyes widened in surprise. He looked at her, startled, his expression resembling one of a fish. Skylor stared innocently back when really her devious little mind was thinking "oh yeah, I got him now!"
Kai's mouth opened and closed for a moment before he exclaimed. "You can't just kiss me to win!"
Skylor rolled her eyes and made to get up, taking the blanket with her. "Alright, then I won't kiss you!"
Kai latched onto her hand and pulled her back down beside him with a thump before she could walk away. "You can win this time." Kai gave her a pleading look. He sent a sweet, adoring smile that sent her heart stuttering. Skylor humphed but allowed him to lay them both slowly down on the ground. Skylor sighed and looked up at the stars, relaxing as Kai's hand began to slowly card through her red locks.
"Even though you won," Kai whispered into the quiet night. "Glamping is not a fancy word. It just means glamorous camping."
"It's teenage slang," Skylor whispered back. "And it sounds fancy to me."
Kai let out a long drawn-out breath, Skylor was sure he wanted to bicker more about it but he dropped the subject and settled with a sigh beside her, his breath making her hair flutter over her forehead. The stars glittered like a million fireflies above, winking at them as they stared up at the universe, basking in each other's company.
"Thanks for taking me damping," Skylor murmured as her eyelids began to fall. Her consciousness swam in and out, darkness fading into her vision like a warm blanket. Once, that may have scared her but now all she could feel was love and comfort.
Kai didn't respond and Skylor almost thought he was asleep until he suddenly asked, "What the heck is damping?"
