Chapter 2

They had been on the road for about two hours already but didn't plan to stop until they reached Kentucky, that's where they would stop for the night. "I'm bored" Dustin stated. Everyone turned to look at him "boohoo well we only have a few hours left of the ride for today." Lucas replied. Max looked over at her boyfriend and smiled. "Does anyone know any car games we could play?" Will sighed. They all looked around at one another waiting for someone to suggest a game, it stayed silent for a while until Mike said, "how about word association?" "what is that?" El asked "someone says a word and the following player needs to say a word that associates with the previous work" Mike explained.

They played the game for a good half an hour until they decided it was a good idea to stop for gas and a bathroom break. After refilling the gas tank and stretching their legs they got back in the car and drove for a few more hours when they finally reached Kentucky. They found a motel that was decent and paid for a double room with a pull-out couch. They all decided that the two couples could have the beds while Will and Dustin set up the pull-out couch. They ate the food that Mikes's mom had packed for dinner and agreed that they would find a place to eat breakfast in the morning. Once everyone had finished up their dinner, they took turns in the bathroom brushing their teeth and washing their faces. Then they headed to bed.

In the morning, El was the first one awake. She sat up and looked around the room to see that everyone else was still asleep. She looked at the clock to see that it was around 7 am, El was an early riser. She decided to get up and get ready for her day. She was brushing her teeth when she heard movement from the other room, a minute later Mike walked into the bathroom and hugged El from behind and she almost melted at his touch right then and there. "Good morning beautiful," he said "Good morning," El said blushing. She smiled at him as he reached for his toothbrush and began brushing his teeth. El was just finishing up brushing her teeth and went to get her clothes for the day from her bag.

When she came back into the bathroom Mike was finishing up washing his face and turned to face her, she smiled and walked up to him Mike leaned down to kiss her as their lips connected Mike wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her in closer. El giggled into the kiss as it continued then they heard Dustin "Seriously guys it's like 7 in the morning." They rolled their eyes as, and Mike gave El one final peck before leaving her in the bathroom to get dressed.

Dustin's loud remark woke up the rest of the once peacefully sleeping teens and they had all woken up. They decided to go and get some breakfast before getting on the road. They went to the front desk to check out and asked where the closest place to get food was, the lady at the front desk informed them that there was a diner just up the road. When they arrived at the diner a tall blonde woman in an apron approached the group. "Table for... Six?" she questioned looking over the group. "Yes please," Max answered they were led over to a little booth by the window. On one side sat Will, Mike El, and on the other side sat Dustin, Lucas, and Max.

"So where are we off to on our journey today?" Dustin questioned "Well the plan is just to drive right through Tennessee and then we will stop for the night somewhere in Arkansas" "Okay sounds like a plan to me" Dustin smiled then turned to face Mike, El, and Will. "So, Mike you and El enjoy yourselves this morning?" "yep, until you woke up," Mike remarked as he stared at Dustin. Which caused El to giggle and in return made Mike smile. The waitress returned to the table asking what everyone wanted. El ordered waffles as expected, Mike Dustin and Lucas got bacon eggs and hash browns and Will and Max got pancakes. Once everyone received their food the table grew silent as they ate the food until there was nothing left but crumbs on their plates.

Once they had all finished up their food they got back on the road. Lucas was refusing to let anyone drive claiming they would crash the van. The other teens just let him drive figuring he would cave at some point. Will took the passenger's seat this time as Max sat in the middle with Dustin. Mike and El once again took the back seats. About an hour into the ride and El had fallen asleep with her head in Mike's lap and he played with her loose curls. Lucas was beginning to get tired of driving even though he told his parents he would not let anyone else drive, after another hour Will convinced Lucas to let him drive. The only one in the group who did not have a license was El so if Lucas let the others drive then the ride would be split up equally.

Lucas went and sat in the middle row with Max. Max smiled at Lucas as he sat down. If you did not know Max and Lucas personally then you would not think they were dating, sure maybe best friends. They did not display PDA like Mike and El did, but they had their moments. Lucas was the only one who could calm Max down if something happened at home with her Mom and Stepdad. Max had a rough patch a few years ago because of what happened with her brother Billy in the summer of 1985. She wouldn't talk to anyone for days until she broke down in front of the party, Lucas was the only one who knew how to calm her down. Max is always there for Lucas whether it's him needing extra support at one of his basketball games or just needing to talk to someone about issues he has at home.

Max scooted over closer to Lucas and rested her head on his shoulder. Lucas smiled at her and in return rested his head on hers. Dustin looked back at the two couples and rolled his eyes he turned to look at Will "You realize we are going to have to deal with all the lovey-dovey stuff the entire time, right?" "Yes, Dustin I accepted that fate a while ago" Will laughed. As the drive continued, they finally stopped in Arkansas after another few hours of driving. They finally found a place where they could stop to eat dinner before finding a place to stay for the night. They found a place called the sun dinner. Once they had made their way inside, they were seated at a large booth next to a window where they had a good view of a TV across the way at the bar.

The group ordered a few drinks well they looked over the menu "You know guys, one night we should get totally wasted" Dustin exclaimed a little too loud for the rest of the groups liking, seeing as they received some dirty looks from people seated at other tables around them. Lucas rolled his eyes and whisper yelled "Even though I totally agree with you, 1, it actually is illegal and 2 we don't have any alcohol" Dustin sank back into the seat.

Over the groups high school experience, they had gone to a handful of parties so they all had had some experiences with alcohol, one time Lucas even got some weed from one of his buddies on the basketball team, he obviously shared it with the group, and boy did they have fun. That is until Mr. Sinclair started to smell it and they all ran over to Mike's house before they could get caught. They were not as stealthy as they thought they were that day. Especially because they were high, but Mr. Sinclair did see them running over to the Wheeler's, but decided to let it slide, seeing as it reminded him of his friends and him when he was young and did want to spoil their fun.

El giggled at Dustin's sad expression and said "Maybe we can find a way to get some" Dustin smiled at El and her rosy cheeks "Maybe" he signed and that is when two waiters came back with all the food they had ordered. They all thanked the waiters for the food and dug in. After they had finished up their food and paid, they headed out to the car. "So where are we staying for the night?" Mike questioned. "I saw a sign a little way back advertising a Motel," Will said. "I'm driving," Max said before anyone could protest, and hopped into the driver's seat. 20 minutes later and they had finally arrived at the place they would be staying for the night. They checked in and they managed to get a room with two beds and Lucas and Max decided to get their own room for the night.

When the idea came up to get another room everyone thought Mike and El would have jumped on it, but they stayed quiet, and Lucas and Max happily took the single bedroom. Max and Lucas hung out with the rest of the group until around 10 pm when they headed to their room and the others began to get ready for bed. Mike and El were already curled up in their bed and whispering sweet nothings to one another as usual. Well, Dustin and Will once again bunked with each other, they didn't mind because they had set aside enough money so that when they finally arrived in California, they could have their own beds. It didn't take long for everyone to fall asleep, but Max and Lucas were up a bit later than everyone.
