Chapter 1

It was the last day of the school year 1988 and Michael Wheeler, Lucas Sinclair, Dustin Henderson, William Byers, Maxine Mayfield,
and El Hopper were all in their classes waiting impatiently for the bell to ring dismissing them for the summer that they had all been waiting for.
The idea came to Mike, Lucas, Dustin, and Will one rainy day during one of their many DND campaigns in middle school, to start setting aside money so that one day they could travel themselves all the way to California. In November of 1983, they met Eleven
and in October of 1984, they met Max and their party of four turned into a party of six.
The boys had one day informed the girls of their plan and they were also very interested in tagging along. After years of them all saving up birthday money, holiday money, allowances, and of course once they got older and got jobs the money-saving got a lot easier seeing as they had more income. So, this summer before their final year of high school they decided it would be the perfect time to go on their road trip.
Mike was sitting in his English class counting down the seconds until the bell rang, 5,4,3,2,1, and *ring ring* all the kids in the class shot up from their seats and ran out of the room ignoring the calls of the teacher saying how she dismissed them, and the bell did not. None of the kids in the class cared, especially Mike. The party had agreed to meet up at Lucas's car. They were all making their way over to the car. Max and El were coming from their gym class, Dustin and Will were coming from science, Lucas had a free period before, so he was already waiting at the car when Mike got there.
"Hey Mike, are you ready for tomorrow?" Lucas questioned as Mike approached the car but before Mike could answer he heard El's girly giggle, he turned around quickly as El got closer to him and jumped into his arms. They embraced in a hug and exchanged a kiss. Max rolled her eyes as she approached Lucas "They act as though they haven't seen each other in months when it's only been a few hours" Lucas laughed and put his arm around Max. "Well it felt like years," El exclaimed.
Mike and El had become an official couple in the early spring of 1985, they were soulmates, and everyone knew it, even Hopper (El's father) even if it annoyed him, he knew that Mike made his little girl happy and that is all that mattered to him. They were inseparable. As if their PDA did not give it away. Max and Lucas had also started dating around the same time, as the two love birds but they did not make it as obvious. When they were younger, they would break up every other week, but they would always find their way back to each other and everyone knew they were bound to be together even though they don't make it as obvious, they are truly in love.
As Mike and El finished up their hello to one another Mike answered the question that Lucas had asked him previously "Oh Yeah, I'm so ready for tomorrow I can't wait to get on the road and away from my parents!" Mike said.
Mike's parents were having another rough patch. They go through them a lot and it stresses Mike out, so he is happy that leaving for a good portion of the summer. He made sure his younger sister Holly could stay with his older sister Nancy and her soon-to-be husband Jonathan Byers (Will's brother) for a portion of the summer, so she was not the only one there with the couple.
Will and Dustin were walking out of the high school over to the car. Once they got there, they decided on a game plan for the night. They decided that they will meet at the Wheeler's for dinner where they would discuss the plan for when they would leave tomorrow. Max left with Lucas in his car. Dustin Left in his Car. Normally El would ride home from school with Will seeing as they live together because Joyce and Hopper finally got married a few years back, but El wanted to go to Mike's right away and Will wanted to go home and get a few things for dinner so Will left in his car and El left with Mike in his car.
Smiling at each other Mike got into the driver's seat and El got into the passenger's seat. As Mike started the car El looked over at him "How was your day?" she questioned. Mike turned to face her "It was good I'm just glad this school year is over, how was yours?" he said as he drove away from the parking spot "The same as yours! I and Max were partners in the gym this time, so I didn't have to be partners with Stacey again."
When El started high school everyone wanted to be friends with her. They were curious about her seeing as the chief of police adopted her. She did not have much interest in making any new friends, she was happy with the friend group she had. So, when she started saying no to everyone's invites to go to the mall or parties, a few people did not take it the right way, one of those people being Stacey. Stacey would do whatever she could to make El's life miserable. El tried her best to ignore Stacey's antics, she was pretty good at it because she had Mike and the rest of the party.
"Did she say anything to you today?" Mike asked worriedly, "No just a few dirty looks but that's it." El said well, holding on to one of Mike's hands while his other had a grip on the steering wheel. They were parking in front of Mike's house when El said "Do you think we will get any alone time on this trip?" Mike smiled "Don't worry I set aside some extra money so we could have our room." El smiled in response as Mike leaned in and connected their lips, as the kiss intensified Mike ran his tongue across her bottom lip asking for entrance which she allowed as she moved on to his lap. The kiss began to get more heated until they heard a loud car horn and they both jumped, El letting out a little squeal and Turned around to see Max and Lucas parking behind them laughing.
Lucas and Max got out of the car and approached Mike and El who were now standing outside of Mike's car with swollen lips. "Sorry to interpret your fun but we figured you wouldn't want Mrs. Wheeler seeing you from the window." They motioned to the window where Mrs. Wheeler stood in the kitchen. Mike rolled his eyes and started walking towards the house. El pulled back down her knee-high skirt which had got pulled up a little bit during what Lucas and Max would call her and Mike's "fun".
As they entered the house Mrs. Wheeler walked towards the front door, "Hi Karen!" El smiled After many times of Mrs. Wheeler telling El to call her Karen she was finally starting to do so. Karen was very fond of El and she could tell that she made her son happy. "Hi, sweetie! Hello everyone," she said as all the kids were entering the home.
Dustin had arrived as well and was walking in behind Max and Lucas. "Hello everyone, I am very happy to inform you all that I am all ready to leave tomorrow" Dustin informed. Mike laughed and said, "Well let's have some dinner, and then we can figure out what time we are leaving tomorrow because I know we all want to get this show on the road." Everyone nodded in agreement and went down to the basement while Mrs. Wheeler prepared dinner for the group of teens. Will arrived about 10 minutes later with some extra food for dinner and went to join everyone else in the basement.
The group decided to leave around 9 am the next morning to get an early start on their road trip. They all went home from the Wheeler's last night around seven so they could get a good night's sleep. Lucas's parents agreed to let the kids take their van seeing as it was one of the only vehicles that would fit all six of them. It was around 8:30 am and Mike and Lucas were already in the car, seeing as they lived right next to each other it wasn't surprising they were the first ones there. Eleven and Will arrive next along with Hopper who gave El a lecture on not to use her powers unless absolutely necessary and he also provided Mike with a lecture to make sure he would take good care of his little girl, which he obviously would.
Will and Lucas had a good laugh at how scared Mike looked when Hopper said he wanted a word with him. Max arrived soon after, she went over beside Lucas and asked what they thought was so funny. "Mike looked like he was about to shit his pants because Hopper said that he wanted to talk to him," Lucas said, chuckling to himself. Dustin arrived just as Hopper was leaving which meant he arrived just in time for when Mike and El declared how much they missed each other. Dustin leaned over to Will and said, "they are so whipped" Will let out a laugh in response as he made his way towards the Car. That is when Mrs. Wheeler came out with a couple of coolers in hand and said "I have packed you guys some water and lots of snacks they should last you awhile" "Not with Dustin in the car." Max smirked "hey! For your information Maxine I packed my own snacks." Dustin defended "of course you did" stated Lucas. Dustin rolled his eyes and headed over to the car.
"Thanks for the snacks Mrs. Wh- Karen '' El said while taking one cooler as Mike grabbed the other. "Your welcome sweetheart. I will see you guys in a few weeks, make sure that you have fun but be safe" Karen smiled "We will mom don't worry '' Mike reassured her and with that, the rest of the group headed over to the car. Lucas had agreed to take the wheel first and Max agreed to sit in the passenger's seat, after putting up a fight about who would get the back row first Mike and El happily went and sat in the back while Dustin and Will sat in the middle seats. "whatever but they are probably going to suck face the entire time they are back there." Dustin exclaimed. Will rolled his eyes in disgust at the thought of having to possibly witness his sister and best friend swapping spit. Once El had Mike over and Will did not know and walked in on them doing more than just kissing, it's something he can never get out of his mind.
Will had never been in a long-term relationship. A few years ago claiming that none of the girls in Hawkins were not his type, then not even a month after he said that to the group that girls were not his type at all. The group is very accepting of Will and when he came out to them nothing really changed between any of them. They were all a big loving family, and they would always support each other.
Mike and El were used to all the teasing from their friends and they knew that sometimes they would tend to get lost in the moment, but they tried to save it for when they were alone the best they could. Once Everyone was seated and buckled up, they pulled away from the Sinclair's house and left to begin their trip.
