Levi POV
“You know they want him dead.” Mikasa demanded.
“Yeah, I think it’s payback from high school.” I muttered.
“How are we going to keep him alive?” she demanded. I sighed. How the hell…? I turned at the sound of someone coming down the hall. Eren and his new Captain appeared around the corner.
“The ODM gear. Keep a set stashed always be ready…” I warned her. She showed little emotion, just the opposite of her adopted brother. A slight nod, then Eren saw us. I could read his look from here. He wasn’t happy.
“What are you guys planning?” He asked.
“Your funeral, since you don’t want to listen to us.” Mikasa snarled. My heart stopped for half a beat, damn them! I screamed. Eren shook his head.
“I’m capable of taking care of…” his voice trailed off. His eyes went past us down the hall. I turned. A tall man with glasses and a beat-up briefcase was walking towards us. Pixus leading him to Erwin's office. Without thinking I shifted in front of Eren. The look of disgust on the man’s face was, well, enjoyable.
“What are you doing near my son?” He barked. Then the sweetest words I ever heard rang out, yet I knew how much it cost him to say them.
“You have no son.” Eren stated his voice dark, but firm. Spinning on his heel, he rapped his knuckles on Erwin's door. The tall blond must have had his ear to the wood, with how fast he yanked the portal open. Erwin stepped out, adding his body to mine in shielding the other.
“Pixus, what is this?” He demanded.
“Dr. Yeager was hired by command to do a through physical evaluation of all Unit pilots.” He intoned bored. Eren snorted.
“I’d rather allow Hange to probe me.” He muttered.
“That can be arranged.” The shitty glasses stated. Eren barked out a chuckle.
“No pilot is to enter their unit until the physical has been completed.” Pixus went on. It was apparent he was reciting his orders word for word. He didn’t like this either.
“Very well.” Erwin said. “Captain Levi, please escort Dr. Yeager to a room he can use for the physical. Stay with him until I get there.” He ordered. He then waved a hand for Eren and Hange to enter his office.
“I would like to start with him.” Dr. Yeager indicated the boy.
“And I have important business to discuss with my officers. Mikasa, please go get Petra.” Mikasa had been eerily quiet. At the direction she nodded, uttered a Yes sir, then disappeared down the hall. Never did she say a word to the man in the dark suit before us.
“Come with me, doctor.” I said in my most civil tone. Pixus turned to follow, Eren had already gone inside Erwin's office. The blond clicked the door shut, as the doctor stood starring after his son. He spun on his heel a snarl curling his lip. He glared at me. I smirked but marched down the hall.
I led them to a room off of Hange's lab. It had what he would need in it. I then leaned against the wall. He began to set up his space.
“You will, of course, need to leave during each examination.” He told me.
“Nope!” I made the p pop. He spun.
“That is against all…” I stopped him.
“This is the military; they have no privacy.” I narrowed my eyes at him. His breathing quickened slightly. My very presence was bothering him. Petra came about fifteen minutes later. I ordered Mikasa to stay to have another female present. The exam was pretty routine. When he saw the command node he raised a questioning eye at me. I didn’t say anything. Instead, he asked the new Ensign about it.
“Oh, it helps us link with the unit.” She explained. He nodded. Concluding his exam. Mikasa led the other out of the room.
“You and Eren…” the good doctor began. The door burst open. Bertolt rushed in looking like he ran all the way here.
“Sorry, sir…” He panted. “Cadet Kristen just told me to report…” He gasped out struggling to collect his breath.
“And where were you?” I asked.
“Watching the gauntlet training, sir.” The gauntlet was a routine I set up to make the cadets move fast, they had to get through several obstacles then get into their ODM gear as fast as possible to clear the field. It was set up on the other side of the compound. I snorted.
“Go, regain your composure. Get a drink.” I ordered. He nodded, saluted then closed the door. I frowned.
“As I was saying…” Dr. Yeager went on.
“He is an adult in the eyes of every legal organization around. What he does or doesn’t do, well that’s on him.” I stated. Shrewd eyes looked over me.
“You do know I can bench him?” He smirked. The door opened again. Erwin and the other two walked inside. Dr. Yeager glanced over at them. Erwin met his gaze with a shielded one of his own.
“Dr. Yeager, this is Lieutenant Eren Yeager. Commander of the B.R.A.T unit.” Erwin introduced them for the record.
“Wow, two promotions in the same day.” Bertolt was back. He eyed Eren.
“Yes, well moving him to an officer this morning was the first step to getting him his command. Pixus brought me the papers signed by the head to promote him to Lieutenant.” Erwin offered. He gestured toward the center of the room.
“Why don’t you both get ready.”
“That’s not how…” Dr. Yeager began. Bertolt and Eren already took off their shirts. That lip curled again. Did he actually think we would leave him alone with the boy he abused? My eyes racked over the two before me. It irritated me how Bertolt licked at his lower lip seeing Eren nearly naked.
“What are these marks?” Dr. Yeager indicated some red marks on Eren's skin.
“This is the military, sir. I have many forms of training that I do throughout the day. They could be from anything.” He answered. The man snorted but continued a visual examination of both solders bodies. He wrote down notes on his pad. He took their vitals and then began the hands-on exam.
He pressed various parts of their bodies, checking their neck, arms legs, back and chest. He listened to their hearts and stomach sounds. Then he tapped the node on the back of Eren's neck.
“What is this?” He demanded. Hange opened their mouth to answer, but Erwin beat her to it.
“It is a command node to operate the units.” They were giving him the barest information.
“What does it do to the host body?” Dr. Yeager wasn’t giving up so easily.
“Nothing. It is just a conduit between man and machine.” Erwin answered. Seeing that he wasn’t going to get anywhere he concluded his exam.
“You will have my full report in the morning.” He closed his briefcase.
“I’m afraid that won’t do. The pilots are scheduled for weapons training this afternoon. No information you obtained from them may leave this facility. You will give me you concluded report, all information gathered and any other important information, before leaving here, today.” Erwin told him. The doctor looked like he wanted to kill the blond commander.
“Ensign Hoover, please escort Commander Pixus and Dr. Yeager to the office across the hall. That briefcase is not to leave your direct line of sight, understood?”
“Yes sir.” Bertolt saluted. He took the two men out of the room
Only then did Erwin’s face show any sign of how worried he was. I was also sure, I was the only one who could read it. “Why was he the one chosen?” Erwin muttered loud enough for only me to overhear. I didn’t respond, it wasn’t that type of question.
“Will he try to stop me from piloting the unit?” Eren asked.
“I doubt it.” Erwin leaned beside me against the wall. “Most likely he was only here to see if you and Levi were back together. I’m sure he will report that.”
“Was it wise to put Bertolt in charge of him?” Eren asked. Erwin grinned.
“The office I sent him to, is Armin's. I made sure he was in it before coming here. Also, Mikasa and Jean were in the hall.” Erwin's mind didn’t let him be less than three steps ahead of any situation.
“Levi, until I can get him to leave, you will not be alone with Eren for even a second. Understood?”
“Yes sir.” He sighed.
“I really don’t like how they meddle.” Erwin shoved off of the wall. He strolled to the door yanking it open.
“Shall we?” He asked. We all marched out. The door to the office was left open. “Captain Hange, I want you to take your unit personal up to the testing range. Go over all parameters. It will be vital they understand just where things are located. We do not want any mishaps.” He ordered. Hange saluted gesturing for Eren to go before them.
“Captain Levi, is the ODM gear battle still happening this weekend?”
“Yes sire.” I stated.
“Make sure the pilots are included. We want to keep everyone fight ready.” I nodded. Offered my salute before he dismissed me. As I walked past the office door, I saw Armin working silently at his desk. Mikasa stood beside the door. Bertolt and Dr. Yeager were near the printer. I saw his eyes flash. Erwin made sure he saw Eren and I leave in two very different directions.
The final report came a few hours later. All pilots were cleared for duty. I pondered what his motive for this could have been. I was sure it was to see Eren, but why? With Reiner showing back up, I worried that Dr. Yeager had more at stake than just his son’s health. A knock sounded on my door.
“It’s open.” Eren walked in. Took one look at me, strolled up to my chair. Deftly he plucked me from it, holding me in his arms as our mouths met. I relaxed the tight tension in my muscles. He was safe, for now.
