Eren POV
When Hange told me the modifications she had made to my unit, I couldn’t believe it. She wanted me to continue fighting? Was she insane? Well, I knew she was but this… this was too much? Or was it? If what she was saying was true, I could still fight with them all. I could still project them all.
“Let’s do it.” I stated tossing the covers off of me.
“Levi is going to murder us all!” Armin whined.
“I would rather die fighting then sitting useless in this bed while they all go down!” I snarled.
“That might be what happens.” Hange grinned at us. “But why not try?” She giggled swinging the wheelchair beside the bed.  She showed me how to get up and turn my body to sit in it. Then we went downstairs.
“The little runt took my jeep!” She fumed for about thirty seconds. That was when she shrugged and hot wired a car that sat by the ambulance bay. She stowed my chair in the trunk and we were off.
Seeing my unit mended did a lot for my frame of mind. At least one of us was in combat condition. “OK, so modifications, obviously you can no longer stand in the unit. I thought about wires and stuff, but that would be too complicated. so, a chair.” She opened the hatch. The chair looked comfortable at least.
“OK, eventually you will get a prosthetic, which will be fantastic, but for now, I made a switch plate sort of thing. When you are in the chair, you will have to press this down to make it walk.” She showed me the switch on the side of the chair. It would be under my right leg. I nodded. We rode up in the unit together. She swung another board around to me. Pointing out all the things I could make the leg do during battle.
“What if my arms aren’t free to push the buttons?” I asked. She stopped.
“I didn’t think of that.” She muttered. Waving her hand around as if to erase my question she went on.
“Just don’t get your arms caught. We will think of fixing it later. Now, Armin will have the ability on his control board to stabilize the right leg. That way you don’t have to worry to much about it.” We nodded, she then pointed out the water spike thing. It shot from the hand and it was strong enough to cut! Did you even know you could cut metal with water? I didn’t.
Marching into battle had felt surreal for me. I had done it often enough, but this time, I wasn’t whole. It didn’t matter, my unit was. I didn’t know where anyone was as I came up to the scene. For awhile I could only hear Hange and Armin.  Levi and Erwin weren’t answering me. Then, Erwin screamed in my ear, that fucking hurt! Now I had to defeat this machine with one leg and a headache!
Yet, I had done it. With help from everyone, but I had stopped it! There still might be a place for me in this unit! Levi rode back to base with me. I was sure it was only to ensure that was where I went. I stored my B.R.A.T. once back in my wheelchair, Levi jumped on me kissing me. I had fought. The euphoria of what we had just accomplished washing over me.
Now, I sat outside the Commander’s office. Everyone else was inside. Levi, Armin and Hange were telling Erwin about my fight and how I had done it. Jean walked up and sat on the bench beside me. He looked freshly showered.
“You are fucking insane, Eren.” He muttered.
“Yeah, maybe.” I agreed.
“I haven’t had a panic attack since I was twelve. Hearing you on the comms, finding out you were fighting! I nearly shit myself! How the hell could you be so fucking dense?” He was glaring at me. “Did you even once consider what it did to him? Seeing you walk into battle, knowing you were injured! Or was it just the great Eren Yeager, out to prove rules don’t matter to him, nor does anyone around him!” He yelled. I gasped.
“That’s not true!” I screamed back. “Nothing they did phased that thing. Another B.R.A.T unit was the only thing that could take it down. I’m still a pilot!”  I yelled up at him. “I was thinking about Levi, you Mikasa, everyone was out there doing their best while I sat huddled in a goddamn hospital bed!”.
“BECAUSE YOU LOST YOUR FUCKING LEG!” Jean screamed. We were both breathing heavily while glaring at each other. The office door opened.
“Get your asses in here, both of you.” Erwin commanded. Jean pushed me inside the room. Levi stood leaning his hip against the large wooden desk, arms folded over his well muscled chest. Mikasa stood on the opposite side of the desk matching his pose. Armin and Hange sat in huge leather chairs facing the desk. Jean pushed me up beside Armin, in front of Levi. He then dragged a chair from the table over to sit between Armin and Hange.
Erwin walked around us all. He slid his hand across Levi’s shoulder. Then took his seat. Stapling his fingers, he pressed them to his bowed forehead. For a moment it looked like he was praying. Maybe he was. He definitely needed strength to deal with all of us. Slowly, his blond head lifted.
“Eren…” He spoke my name as if it pained him to say it. “As of this moment, your only assignment is to get healed, and get your strength back. What I saw in that unit, wasn’t the soldier I know you to be.” I glanced at Levi. His scowl deepened.
“What, uh, Commander, what does that mean?” I asked. His response was to pick up a stack of papers from his desk. He held them out to Levi. The ravenette shoved them into a large shredder. We watched in silence as the thing devoured the papers. It was Levi who broke the silence that followed.
“That was your discharge from the military.” He stated. I blinked at him.
“I gave Levi the task, tonight of deciding your fate.” Erwin said. Levi moved to sit on the desk directly in front of me.
“You have three tasks before you can be moved to active duty. 1…” He held up a finger. “… heal, your body and mind need that. You need to come to terms with what happened to you. 2…” another finger went up. “… get your strength back. Learn to walk before you try running little brat.” He smirked at this. “… and 3…” one more finger went up before he leaned forward putting one hand on his knee. He lifted my face so we were looking eye to eye. “This is non negotiable, Lieutenant Yeager.” He spoke softly but with his same demanding tone. “You will marry me, or all deals are off.” He tilted his head and grinned. “Understand?” he demanded.
“So, uh if I say no, I can’t come back to active duty?” I asked. He slapped my face before falling into my arms.
“Don’t fuck with me tonight brat.” He warned. I giggled kissing his nose.
“Get a ring and try asking me the right way!” I informed him. He chuckled.
“As of now, you are on sick leave. Once those three conditions…” Erwin grinned as Levi repositioned himself in my lap. “… are met, you will have earned the right to prove you are fit for combat, in the B.R.A.T. unit. Are there any questions?” He asked.
“What are Armin and Hange’s punishments?” I asked.
“Starting at 0600 hours tomorrow, Cadet Armin Arlert will report to duty with Captain Zoe.” He stated. “They will be tasked with getting you a leg that will help you to optimally run your unit.” He said.
“Which brings us to Jean.” All eyes fell to the teen. Erwin stood. Leaning over his desk he held out new orders.
“You will report to Captain Zoe as well. Marco, once healed, will also join the B.R.A.T. unit. Understood?” His piercing blue eyes racked over us. As one we answered.
“Yes Sir!” the others stood for their salute. I did the best I could from my seat.
“Dismissed.” Erwin said. “Except for Levi and Eren.” I stopped. Armin and I exchanged a quick look, then he left. Once everyone was out of the room, Erwin poured us all drinks.
“I’m still underage.” I told him. He forced the glasses into my hand.
“You are old enough to fight for the freedoms of others, to lose parts of yourself in that fight…” He stated clinking his glass to mine. “… then you are old enough to drink.” We took a drink. The alcohol burned down my throat. Levi glanced over at me.
“Eren, is this what you want? To return?” He asked.
“I want the ability to protect my friends. I can’t do that if I can’t fight beside them.” I stated.
“We want to assign a small unit of ODM abled solders to the B.R.A.T unit. It will be the new Levi squad.” Erwin informed me.
“Mikasa has already agreed to be my second in command. Her rank will be equal to yours.” Levi stated. “I am also bringing on Connie, Sasha and Krista.” He informed me. I snorted.
“You better add Ymir to that list or be prepared to have your head on the chopping block.” I warned. Levi smirked.
“And Ymir.” He added. I nodded.
“There won’t be any time limit set for your recovery. In three months, we will evaluate your condition. At that time, we will see if you are either ready to return or need more time. We will evaluate then when the next evaluation will be, does that sound adequate to you Lieutenant?” Erwin asked.  I sipped more of the whiskey in my glass as he spoke. Coughing, I could only nod.
“Very well. You will be twenty in a few days, isn’t that, right?” Erwin asked.
“A bit over a week.” I said. He nodded again.
“You are dismissed. Get him back to the rehab facility before he is missed.” Erwin ordered. Hange and Armin were already beside the jeep. They put me inside. Mikasa sat there.
“Eren, I don’t like this. But I understand you. If you believe you can do something you will. I believe you can walk again. That’s all I care about.” She turned to face me. “Don’t worry about the others. I will protect them until the day comes, when you are back.” I hugged her then.
“You know, for a sister, I could have picked worse.” I chuckled.
“For a brother, you’re a huge pain in the ass.” She sat back, a light smile on her face. “But I wouldn’t trade you in.” she teased. The others climbed inside. We went back to my room, after getting food for everyone. Jean and Marco where there.
Jean had given Marco his new orders. We celebrated into the early hours of morning. That was when we all collapsed into sleep. I wrapped my fiancé up in my arms, kissing him goodnight. My life was coming back together. The smile stayed on my face until sleep took me in its dark embrace.
