Levi POV
After Erwin left, I lost myself for an hour or so. Jean and Connie had stayed to help. I sent them to check on the clamps and other stuff that would house the B.R.A.T.s when they were brought back in. The team of six men from Pixus' unit I divided into two teams. One was to straighten anything that was turned over. The other was to do an inventory of anything they found. Their strict orders were only to the areas where the people fighting to save Eren weren't.
I set the task of cleaning the blood and other mess from the floor to myself. Cleaning always helped calm me. It didn't shut my ears off. I heard everything when it came to saving Eren. How the doctor was fighting to reach all of the punctured veins that were spewing the blood everywhere, how he needed smaller hands. This was where Armin leapt into action. His tiny hands fit into the wound easier than the doctor's large ones. With the metal clamps, he was able to stop most of the blood from leaving the patient's body. Each time I heard that he had successfully clamped off something, I breathed a little easier.
Yet, the fucking little brat wasn't helping. Eren wasn't fighting to remain alive. It was like a part of him had given up on the fact that he could survive this. He had said his goodbyes as quickly as he could. Being the son of a doctor, did he understand how bad his leg wound was, without even seeing it? Had he felt his life slipping away that fast? I wasn't sure, but the little shit was giving everyone a hard time of keeping him alive.
"Blood pressure dropping." Hange stated in a detached way. I wanted to punch them. "Heart rate increasing." Things like this kept going on the entire time.
"Alright last clamp." I heard the doctor say. "Time to remove the..." that was when he flatlined for the first time.
"Paddles!" the doctor yelled. I froze. I was bent over scrubbing up his blood. I couldn't breath, couldn't move. Every piece of me was frozen waiting. Every inch of my body was begging for the monitor to start beeping again. My breathing came faster. 'Come on you fucking brat!' I screamed inside my head. It felt like my own heart had stopped. I was gasping for breath. A hand fell to my shoulder. I couldn't even raise my head to see who it was. Another hand tried to pull the sponge from my fingers to continue cleaning. My hand refused to open. My body was locked in place.
I heard the sound of someone talking near me. It made no sense so, I didn't bother to focus on it much. Instead, the only thing I was pinning my entire attention to, was that fucking monitor. I begged it to start again!
Finally, it came. A soft steady beep, beep. "He's back." Doctor Yeager sighed.
Jean whispered to Connie "Let it go, he will finish it." The hand on the sponge vanished. A second later so did the one on my back.
The knife was removed, only to find another spray of blood. One more vein he had failed to see needed to be clamped. Once more, Armin's small hands dove into his best friends body. Sweat beaded on the coconut heads brow. He struggled to not get cut on the knife. Then, he pulled his hands out.
"Done." He breathed out. One of the other medical staff handed him a towel. He mopped the sweat from his forehead. Our eyes met briefly. In his, I saw the same worry I knew raged in my own body. I had to turn away. Time went on. They continued to reattach his veins, muscles whatever else was wrong inside his leg. I finished cleaning up and sanitizing where the blood was.
"Doctor he needs blood." Hange said.
"Do you have his type?" Asked the doctor.
"I have A- and AB+." Came the hushed reply. Doctor Yeager shook his head.
"Eren is B+" He whispered. Hange's face paled. The doctor glanced up. "Keep working." He intoned.
"Without more blood..." Hange was stopped when the machine beside them screamed. For the second time the boy on the table flat lined. I gasped. My body felt like it was going to shake itself apart. Every nerve in me was vibrating at a high rate. Jittery would have been nice compared to this feeling. I watched in horrified fascination as the doctor's steady hands used the paddles to jumpstart the heart I loved.
I loved him. I knew that now, more than ever before. I mean I had done everything for him. He was my life. When was the last time I told him? I couldn't remember.
The monitor began its steady beeping again. "There is nothing we can do about that right now." Doctor Yeager simply went back to the previous conversation.
"I am O-" I stated. All heads swung to me. Eyes huge and round. I had hidden my blood type for years. The fact that I was a universal donor made a lot of people in the military very interested in you.
"Get him prepped." The doctor ordered. Hange began to move.
"Armin knows how. Stay with him." I couldn't even say his name. Not now, not when I didn't know if it would be for the last time. I refused. I wouldn't say his name again, not until I saw those eyes open, that smile in place. I shook myself as Armin's hand encircled my arm. I followed the blond over to a chair.
Stripping off my blood-stained shirt I laid my arm on the arm of the chair. My eyes on the feet of the boy in the bed. Armin took my blood pressure. Asked me a serious of stupid questions then cleaned my arm with alcohol wipes. He inserted the needle.
"Armin, will he ..." I began.
"The knife nicked his artery. That's why he lost so much blood already. The surgery is draining more of what little he has left." He paused meeting my eyes. "I don't know." Fear burned brightly in his blue eyes. I squeezed his hand.
"I will gladly give my life for him." I whispered.
"What? So, he can come back and murder us all for letting you? That won't happen, either, Captain." He demanded a firmness settled into his jawline. If the situation wasn't so dire, I may have smirked at that. Right now, it felt like my face had forgotten how to.
I turned back to the table. The flat line monitor sounded again. Doctor Yeager worked once more to restart his son's heart. For the third time it began to beep again. This time it was much, much slower.
"Armin, we don't have time to withdraw the blood. It will have to be a direct transfusion." The doctor called out. Even now he sounded so calm.
Armin helped me stand. Steadied my wobbly body. He walked me over to the table. Jean appeared with the chair. I fell into it. My eyes went to the face I knew so well. It was looking up at the ceiling. Well, it was turned that way, the boy wasn't looking anywhere. Eyes closed, face pale, heart being forced to beat. I reached up to take his cold hand in mine. I laced our fingers together. Leaning my head back onto the tall back of the chair, I watched his face. The steady beeping of the monitor hiccupped once, then settled back into its rhythm. My eyes slowly sank closed.
When I woke, I was lying in a bed. My head felt fuzzy. I tried to move my arm to push against my head, it wouldn't move. I turned my head to the left. There he was. Eren laid in the bed beside me. Our hands were still connected.
"Neither of you would let go." A voice stated from the other side of the bed. I turned that way. Erwin leaned against the door frame. He pushed off to walk to the side of my bed.
"He hasn't woken up yet, so you haven't missed that." Erwin stated in a soft tone.
"How is he?" I asked.
"Alive." Erwin frowned as he looked over at the boy. "We don't know if he will have any lasting damage to his leg or not. The good doctor..." he frowned as he said that. "... thinks he will survive. It was lucky that you were able to donate blood to him."
"Yeah." I muttered. "Where is the good doctor?" I asked.
"He left when I came in. Went to get some coffee. Honestly, Levi, he hasn't left since cleaning up after the surgery last night." Wait a minute. My head snapped back to Erwin's face.
"Last night?" I questioned.
"You've been out for like twelve hours." He informed me. I sighed.
"Oh, good, I thought you would be waking up soon." The door behind Erwin was being pushed open. Armin maneuvered a tray through the widening gap. Erwin left my side to go hold the door. Armin gave him a grateful smile. He stepped through, closing the distance between us. His blue eyes watched me as he opened his mouth to speak. Just before anything came out, his eyes darted toward the bed beside me. I saw those eyes widen, his muscles reflexively loosen. The tray was caught by gravity.
Erwin noticed, darting forward. But, what had made him react like that. Even as my hand was reaching out to help catch the tray, my eyes were turning toward the bed next to me. Sea green and blue eyes sparkled at me.
"Klutz." A soft gentle chuckle filled the sudden silence. I forgot about the tray. I was rolling toward the light at my side. The smile beaming out of the pale face. I rolled over the barrier separating us. An oof escaped those full plump lips a moment before mine met them.
I kissed him with all the fear and relief that filled me. I leaned into him. Breathing out, as my hand fell over his beating heart.
"I love you, you fucking brat." I whispered. His free arm laid softly against my back.
"I love you, too. But, uh, Levi, your elbow is in my diaphragm." He gasped. I shifted. His breathing evened out. His leg laid to the other side of me. It was wrapped up tightly with bandages.
"Don't terrify me like that again!" I scolded laying my ear against his heart.
"Eren!" Armin squealed. A second later he was across the body from me. Eren chuckled.
"Eren?" I whispered. His beautiful eyes swung back to me. I smiled. A real smile, something I hadn't done since I don't know when. It felt like my face was cracking from it. Like ice was shattering and I was becoming real again. Eren's eyes widen at the sight.
"Levi..." He breathed out. The warmth from his breath dissolving the ice further. I grinned.
"We should get married." I stated.
"WHAT?" Came a cry from behind me. I laughed, an actual real laugh. I forgot about Erwin for a minute. Yet, the tray never did crash to the floor. Eren's forehead pressed to mine.
"When I can walk again, yes." He agreed. His mouth claimed mine. I pulled my hand free from between our bodies.
"No!" Armin and Erwin yelled behind us. Laughing we both looked up at them.
"You can't..."Armin began looking too shocked to continue.
"... propose like that!" Erwin stated.
"No without..." Armin began.
"... a ring!" they finished together. I turned to see Eren looking at them with the same emotion I was feeling. Surprise with more than a little humor.
"I think you guys need to start dating!" Eren told them.
"Who says we haven't?" Erwin asked eyebrow raised as he dropped his arm to Armin's shoulders. The other blond wrapped his arm around the taller one's waist. Both were grinning at us.
"WHAT!?" Eren screamed in my ear. I buried my face in his chest as my body shook with laughter.
