Eren POV
The next three months were a lot of ups and downs. I felt like I was riding a roller coaster I couldn't get off. My rehab would go slow for ever, then a break through only to stall at that level until the next break through. Sometimes it would be days, other times weeks between them.
The longer it took the more discouraged I felt. Levi would come every day. I was his only assignment, or so he kept telling me. I knew it was a lie. He was a Captain after all. Mikasa took up a lot of slack for him to be with me. Even there I felt like I was failing. I couldn't keep up with the great Captain Levi.
I never told him that was how I felt. Not once did I say I knew the day would come when he would leave me. I would never be whole again, no matter how hard people tried to convince me. They would say it didn't matter, but I would see how they looked at me when they didn't think I was paying attention.
Armin was the best. Best friend, best supporter best everything. He never lied. "Your life will be different, it's something you have to come to terms with." He told me one day when he came. He was alone, which was rare. Typically, Erwin or Levi was with him. "The rest of us, our lives aren't changing. Only how we deal with you." I had smacked him then, he simply laughed.
Marco had gotten out of the hospital a week before. Left alone most of the time, I was drowning. The only one that saw it was him. He knelt in front of me as he locked the brakes on my chair. "Eren, I love you, you're my brother no matter what you're thinking right now. Those feelings will never change." His gaze flicked out over the water. A small pond that sat on the hospital grounds.
"Together, you and I have gone through the worst parts or our lives." His hand fell onto my knee. The one without a leg. He turned to look me in the eye. "I got through losing my parents because of you. Hell, I wouldn't be alive today if it wasn't for you..." His voice trailed away. His smile grew saddened. "It kills me to know you've been thinking about suicide more and more..."
"How did you..." He stopped me by pressing a finger to my lips.
"Because I know you, Eren. You hardly come to the lab any more." His blue eyes looked up at me. Then he unlocked the wheels to my chair. He paused. "There's a cliff on the other side of this pond. It's 200 feet to the rocky shore below. Think we will survive? Should I get a running start?" He asked. Cold seeped into his icy eyes. No one talked to me like this any more.
With a huff I reached down and locked the brakes again. "Just because I think about something, doesn't mean I'm gonna do it." I muttered looking away. His hand slapped my face. Armin was never violent unless he had to be.
Holding my stinging cheek, I looked up at him. "If you don't want me to lie to you, then stop lying to me!" He demanded. It was like a flood gate opened. At first, we just starred at each other then, I couldn't stop.
"He's going to leave me. Find someone who can keep up with him. I can't even get a leg that stays fit to me. I can't walk. I'm forced to depend on everyone. I hate it. I hate my life. I hate seeing the pain and caution in everyone's face when they look at me. I hate feeling useless!" I bellowed. The tears ran unchecked down my face. He didn't move to wipe them away, neither did I.
"Did that make you feel better?" He asked still with that mask on.
"No!" I yelled. Then I didn't stop. I just screamed. Not words just all the anger and frustration that was building inside of me, suddenly just came out. Like two idiots we sat beside the pond and screamed.
When my throat ached, my voice cracked and I couldn't feel the anger any more, I slumped in the chair. I wanted only to sleep, but sleep barely came any more. "I think you're done here." Armin stated.
"Yeah, take me back to my room." I whispered. He unlocked the brakes. Pushing me toward the building. I didn't want to go inside. I looked down at my useless body. What more could I do? I was at the mercy of every one around me.
We came around the front of the building. A wheelchair van sat there. Levi was leaning against it. It was green. The wings of freedom painted proudly on the side. Erwin and dad came walking out of the building. Erwin was carrying a large duffle bag.
"All set?" He asked Armin.
"I haven't told him." Armin stated. Erwin looked down at me.
"Lieutenant Yeager, your orders are to return to base." Erwin informed me. He then looked to Levi, "Load him up Captain." Levi pushed off of the side. He stepped sideways, not towards me. Hange jumped out grabbing my wheelchair handles from Armin. She shoved me onto the lift. Levi raised me up to the van floor. I was pushed inside. I didn't care. I looked away.
Levi looked so good today. Like he had actually slept at night. His hair was hanging in his eyes. He would need to get it cut soon. The green of his poncho made his face look thinner, more angular. All that beauty didn't deserve to be on one guy. Or wasted on me. I jerked when something hit my arm.
Looking up I saw Hange had pushed me into the driver's spot. "What the hell? I can't drive!" I yelled at her.
"Well, sweetie, no one else can drive this van. If you haven't noticed, there isn't a drivers seat." She smirked. "Now, let me show you how to lock yourself in. First lock your wheels." She demanded. I gaped at her.
"Hange!" I said through gritted teeth. "I don't have a driver's license!" I hissed at her. She giggled.
"You drive a B.R.A.T. unit, can't you figure out how to drive a car?" She laughed. Swiftly she was in my face. "Lock your wheels, or I may get mad." She smiled tilting her head around as she spoke. I sighed. Not breaking eye contact, I locked the wheels. She patted my head.
"Good boy." Pointing to something above my left shoulder, she instructed me to grab the seat belt. I did so. The place I needed to buckle it to was raised up higher. She showed me the button to bring it up out of the floor and put it back so I could move the chair. I clicked the belt in.
"Now, only when you drive, do you need to lock the seat belt on your chair." I glared at her. I hated that thing. "Do it, that's an order!" She demanded. I hooked the seatbelt that would keep me tied to my wheelchair.
"Good boy. Looks like baby Erwin was right about you. No more kid gloves, bitch." She snorted. I looked away. "Yes, next fix the mirrors until you can see Levi." I did as she asked. She leaned in closer. "Did you like his make up, he didn't want you to worry that he wasn't sleeping. He let me do it." I blinked. Levi was wearing make up? He allowed...
"How bad is he?" I asked.
"Well, it's about time you asked about someone other than yourself!" She squealed, clapping her hands together. "Oh, and he is miserable. It's why Erwin demanded your release a month and a half sooner. Levi hasn't slept in weeks." She went on to show me how to drive.
"Since you still have your left leg, you can drive like anyone else. We thought about leaving the regular drivers seat in, since you can transfer from chairs now, but we thought you would argue about driving." She smiled at me. I sighed.
"You can put it back in?" I asked. She laughed slapping my arm lightly.
"Of course." She dropped into the seat across from me.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" A deep grouchy voice demanded.
"Giving Eren a driving lesson!" She stated glaring up at the man slightly bent over.
"Like hell, get out of my seat!" Levi yelled.
"Play nice kids, and Hange, that's my seat. The two of you are in the back. Move!" Erwin commanded. Hange left the seat, Levi hadn't moved from his spot. "Don't make me order you Captain!" Erwin warned. Levi squeezed my shoulder before disappearing There were seats that folded up against the side of the van. He pulled one down and sat in it. Armin and Hange were across from him.
"Let's get you home." Erwin said. Although I didn't have my license it didn't mean I had never driven before. We didn't need licenses to drive around base. I just hadn't ever driven on a road before. I pulled out of the semi circle.
"That is your dad's car. Follow it to base." Erwin instructed, pointing to a black sedan before us. I did so. It took about forty minutes to get to base. I was surprised as I pulled up. The house had been rebuilt.
"We couldn't bring you sooner because we had to make sure it was all wheelchair accessible. Come on, don't just gawk at it." Erwin chuckled. I unhooked myself. Carefully I maneuvered my chair to where the lift was. Hange showed me how to operate it. I nearly fell off of the side as I tried to get on it the first time. Hange and Levi caught me. Neither would help me reposition myself. They made me do it all alone. Determined to show them, I did it.
"Should have listened to him sooner." Levi mumbled as I replaced the lift in my van.
"Who?" I asked.
"Armin. He told us we were allowing you to wallow to much. Sort of yelled at us all. Ending with if you chose to die it would be because we were being jerks." Levi stood beside me. He slapped my face hard, before sitting in my lap.
"Stop thinking I'm leaving you, you fucking brat." He gave me a quick kiss. Reaching into an inside pocket, he produced a ring box. Slipping off of me he knelt in the dirt of the drive way. Hange gasped.
"Eren, I've loved you from the moment those eyes first looked into mine. Will you stop being a whinny bitch and marry me?" He asked opening the ring box. Inside was a sterling silver ring. Blue sapphires lined the left side while diamonds lined the right. It was like the wings of freedom symbol.
"No." I said. Everyone froze. "I refuse to stop being a whinny bitch!" I stated. Then I reached out to touch his face. I wiped my thumb just under his eyes. The dark circles and bags that indicated how little sleep he has had showed up.
"But I will marry you, so stop hiding from me." I told him. He smirked.
"Fucking brat." He hissed snatching ahold of my hand. He turned it over to push the ring onto my finger. It was a perfect fit. He then leaned forward and kissed me.
"I won't lie to you, or hide from you again. Just fucking sleep in my bed with me!" He ordered.
"You can't order me around!" I complained.
"Who do you think you are? I am still a superior officer!" His lips twitched as he stood up trying not to laugh.
"You're right, I forgot." I saluted him. "Thank you for reminding me Captain brat!" I shouted. Everyone, including Levi burst out laughing. For once, I felt like their equal. I looked around. Shock stopped my laughter. Mom stood holding on to dad. It looked like if he twitched, she would fall down. I hadn't seen her in nearly six weeks.
"Mom!" I cried out. She looked like a skeleton with skin stretched over it. So, thin and frail. I gasped. Why hadn't I asked about her? Why hadn't I wondered where they were? Was I that self centered.
"Mom!" I cried again shoving my way through people to get to her. Her bony arms slipped around my neck. We were both crying.
