It had been three days since the expedition.

Three days since Isabel and Farlan died.

After every expedition, the Scouts got a week off—time to rest, see their families, or simply recover. If you had no family, like me, you stayed at HQ, caught in a strange limbo of doing nothing but existing.

I was lying on the top bunk of the bed I'd slept in weeks ago. Beneath me was Levi, quietly reading. Both of us were dressed down: he wore gray sweats and a plain t-shirt, I had on a black tee and joggers. Casual, muted—like the mood hanging over us.

In my hand, my phone glowed softly. I scrolled through the digital bookshelf. Most were fanfictions, unsurprisingly. But I had a few full series downloaded: Divergent, The Selection, Shadow and Bone. A tiny comfort, a piece of my old world that stubbornly stayed intact—even my battery wasn't dying. Odd, but I wasn't questioning it.

I heard Levi shift. His feet hit the floor with a soft thud.

"You doing anything, brat?" he asked, voice flatter than usual—impressively so, considering his default tone was already monotone.

"No," I replied in Japanese, sitting up and leaning over the edge to peer down at him.

He looked lost in thought, detached. Neither of us had spoken much since the mission. But there was an unspoken truce between us now. After losing Isabel and Farlan, we knew we couldn't afford to stay angry—not with each other.

"You okay?" I asked gently, hopping down from the bunk.

"Tch. Yeah," he muttered, brushing past me and slipping on a pair of sneakers. I laced up my boots quickly and followed him out.

"You know," I said lightly, trying to lift the mood, "you might wanna work on sounding more convincing when you lie." I spoke in French, finding that sentence too difficult to translate into Japanese.

He shot me a look, and I scratched the back of my neck, instantly regretting the attempt at humor.

We walked without direction, the silence stretching between us. Five minutes passed before we ended up near the library.

Levi held the door open for me, and I slipped inside. We wandered past the rows of shelves until we reached the back, where an old piano sat collecting dust.

"Play," he said in Japanese. I blinked.

He met my gaze directly. "I saw you playing once... with Eyebrows. Can you play something?"

His tone softened slightly. I hesitated, then nodded and stepped past him, taking a seat on the worn bench.

"Anything specific?" I asked.

He shook his head. "Just something like what you played before. I liked it."

My fingers settled onto the keys. Without another word, I started playing Reluctant Heroes—the soft piano version, haunting and slow. I'd learned it just days ago, but I could already play it from memory. Every note felt fitting, like it belonged in this world. This war.

Levi stood still, arms folded, leaning against a bookshelf as the melody filled the room.

When the final chord faded, I turned to him.

"What's it called?" he asked.

"Reluctant Heroes." My voice was quiet. "It's about a soldier who dreams of life beyond the walls... leaving someone they love behind."

Levi exhaled, heavy and slow.

I patted the empty space on the bench beside me. After a pause, he came and sat.
