My blades sliced through the Titan's neck. I landed hard, feet skidding across the ground as my knees bent to absorb the impact. Pain shot up my right arm like fire, and I grit my teeth, forcing myself upright.
Around me, everyone was down. The cadets on the lift above looked on in stunned silence.
"U-Uh—" Sasha's voice wavered. I turned just in time to see her frozen, staring up at a Titan bearing down on her.
"Move!" I shouted—but it was too late.
The Titan lunged.
She screamed, dodging at the last second and hitting the ground, tears spilling from her eyes.
I launched forward, blade twisting in my left hand. I came down hard, driving both blades deep into the Titan's nape. My right arm screamed in protest, but I didn't stop until a chunk of flesh tore free.
The Titan collapsed in a cloud of steam. I dropped my blades as my knees gave out—and then arms wrapped around my waist.
"T-Thank you, Captain (Name)! Thank you, thank you—" Sasha sobbed into me. I gave a shaky laugh, patting her back.
"Everyone, refill your gas and grab new blades," I called out, raising my voice. "I want all of you on that wall ASAP."
I grabbed Sasha by her arms and pulled her up.
"And stop crying," I added gently. "As long as you trust these guys—and yourself—you'll be fine."
She sniffled and nodded, wiping her face as I turned away and headed to the spare gear.
I winced, reaching for one of the training tanks. Sitting on a nearby crate, I refilled the gas, watching the cadets buzz with a new sense of hope. They were smiling. Whispering about how they might actually survive this.
My own arm throbbed, blood soaking through the white of my shirt. Marco's bandages were already stained, a fresh trail of red dripping from my elbow.
Shit.
I stood slowly and moved toward the stairs.
Andrew. He was still on the wall. No gear. No idea what was happening. If the Garrison found him first...
"Arlert!" My voice echoed. Armin looked over, startled, hands still shaking. "You and Ackerman—get everyone to the wall. Now."
The room shifted. Everyone realized what I was doing.
"W-Where are you going?" Connie asked, stepping forward.
I paused.
Lie. Just lie.
"I'm meeting with the Garrison Commander. I need to inform him of what's going on." I gave them a nod. "I trust you to hold things down until I'm back."
Before they could protest, I sprinted up the stairs. Once outside, I leapt over the castle wall, gas hissing from my gear as I launched forward.
Why am I even here?
Why did I forget?
I remembered getting shot. I remembered dying.
I landed on a rooftop, hand clutched over my stomach. I lifted my shirt—there it was. The scar. A reminder. The doctors in the other world had no answers. But I knew. I didn't have this before.
If I die here... do I go back?
Would it be so bad? Dying with Andrew—returning to the real world?
