I panted heavily, hands resting on my head, just finishing five grueling miles with fifty pounds strapped to my back.
Next to me, Levi was also panting—though not nearly as much as I was.
We were the first ones in the entire Scout Regiment to complete the run. Which, honestly, is kind of pathetic. Especially considering Levi wasn't even a soldier to begin with, and I was... well, me.
At the end of the trail stood the Squad Leaders—some with arms crossed, others offering approving smiles.
"Good job, you two!" Hanji called out.
Levi and I nodded, still catching our breath.
"This stuff is heavy," I muttered, adjusting the bag full of random crap weighing me down. My arms dropped limply to my sides.
"You two can take it off now—you're done," Erwin said in Japanese. Both of us obeyed instantly.
It had been three weeks since the last expedition. Longer still since I first arrived here.
In that time, Erwin had practically chained me to a desk, forcing me to read and translate Japanese books for him every. Single. Day.
My Japanese had definitely improved. I'd also dropped some weight, muscle now replacing what used to be softer edges.
Erwin was officially Commander of the Survey Corps now. After our last expedition, Shadis had finally caved and handed over the reins.
"Nice job keeping up, brat," Levi said beside me.
"Thanks, Levi." I smiled. I still wasn't fluent in Japanese—not when speaking, anyway. Reading and writing had gotten easier, but speaking it still made me want to curl up and die. Levi, of all people, had been tutoring me when Erwin wasn't around. If he saw me with a book and a confused expression, he'd explain it to me—in French, of course.
He was also picking up on English. Probably out of boredom. It was the most productive thing either of us could do around here.
"You two can go change, then head to the mess hall for dinner," Erwin instructed, hands behind his back. "The others will join you shortly."
I nodded, though long sentences in Japanese still gave me a headache.
I slung my heavy pack over my shoulder and walked beside Levi. The whole camp already knew we shared a room. People whined about it being "unfair." They just needed to grow the hell up
"I'm going to shower," Levi said once we entered our room.
I raised a brow.
"Shower," he repeated in French.
"Okay. I should, too." He gave a brief nod—my Japanese pronunciation passed the test, even if I was still slow.
I grabbed my towel, clean clothes, undergarments, and toiletries from the dresser. Levi was already gone when I slipped out, boots in hand.
The girls' showers were blissfully empty.
I tossed my dirty clothes into one pile, clean ones into another. My hair came out of its ponytail, and I stepped into the nearest stall, letting cold water run down my back.
Relief, dirt, and sweat washed away, grime peeling off like layers of regret. My muscles ached. Bruises—green and yellow—spotted my skin. I winced, especially when stretching my legs.
I lathered up fast, eager to finish before the girls who hated my guts showed up.
After rinsing off, I pulled the curtain open—and froze.
