DEATHS AND HOSTAGES
"WE ARE GOING to learn how to control your abilities." Marcus began his class with a lecture.
I had been told that last night as I was in painful agony, Simon had found his new ability by making me fall asleep.
So, his new ability was sleep control.
What an odd ability, then again, maybe not so odd.
"Does that mean I can control my hearing?" I was anxiously looking around, waiting for the sounds to come back but I was so nervous I couldn't stay calm and listen in silence.
"Yes, if you learn." Marcus spoke, looking at me.
"Can we hurry then?" I put my hands over my ears, I didn't want to hear that noise again.
"What was it that you heard anyway?" Peter was beant down next to me and now, he rest his hand on my shoulder.
"Everything." I looked up at him not removing my hands from my ears, "there was this strange sound, I thought it would drive me mad, it was a beating sound."
"I see."
Marcus spoke before Peter, "you need to focus your hearing.
Take a breath and calm down first."
I followed his instructions taking my hands from my ears, for I knew it made me look like a nervous wreck.
"Then?" I asked.
"Can you listen for me?" he paused as I nodded, "focus on my breathing."
I'd done this before, normally this was a practice to calm me down, so I knew the method.
Marcus's breathing was so much louder in my ears than it would have been, "now, listen to Oscar's whistling." Oscar paused at the sound of his name and looked at Marcus, but after a glare he continued his whistling.
So calm like wind chimes, "stop.
Listen to Peter's heart beat." Peter too looked at Marcus in shock, glaring at him.
But Marcus's serious look got him to calm down.
That sound, dud dum, dud dum.
It was the same, so that was what I'd heard, I'd heard Peter's heart along with everyone else's heart reminding me of their existance.
"Breathe." Marcus's voice was distant, a small echo, but I could hear it, "and then, push everything away, emerse yourself in your own darkness." I closed my eyes and saw the darkness and then I let go with one breath, everything was gone, I no longer heard a sound, not a creak.
"Thank you!" I sprang at Marcus after some time and gave him a hug.
"Yes, yes.
