When Ryan woke up, with the world a blur and strange echoes surrounding him, he heard a familiar voice, much friendlier than it had been in awhile. "Ryan, are you alright?" The voice seemed to echo and all he saw was a mesh of colors, but he knew that cluster possessed sapphire eyes, a slightly large nose and dirty blonde hair. So, he answered his mother.
"Who hit me?"
The voice sounded a little more stern. "The owner of the house."
"Did she get the letter?" Ryan's hands shot towards the pockets around his belly, but, he realized in a flash, he was wearing a hospital gown and not his hoodie.
"Is that why she told the cops she wasn't going to press charges?"
Ryan's heart skipped a beat, as the room became a little clearer. "She called The Cops?""Yes Ryan, when somebody creeps up on your back porch, that's what tends to happen."
"But I was trying to help her."
"Exactly how were you doing that Mister?"
At that moment, a middle aged man and a teen-aged girl cautiously stepped inside the room, as not to alarm Ryan or his mother. The older man with a slightly graying beard and an extra white smile, flashed a badge while he showed off his teeth to Ryan's mother. His six foot, slightly athletic frame bore a windbreaker, jeans and a ball cap that read Pensacola Florida. His leathery face was dark and his blue eyes made him look benevolent. Although Ryan's vision was still not crystal clear, he had a notion that the officer was a man who could simply move mountains by the simplest of gestures.
Somehow, Ryan recognized the girl, who was blessed with wavy black hair and dark brown eyes. She wore a mustard blazer with a black shirt and leggings.
The man's even voice filled the room with calm and ease. "I'm sorry Mrs. Dart, I'm sure you have all sorts of questions. Especially now, that I flash a badge. I assure you, your son is in no trouble. However, I need to speak with him alone."
As the pretty girl came a little more in focus, a powerful beam pierced through the fog of last night. She had long wavy brown hair, dark eyes and, as the girl smiled at his mother, Ryan could see dimples on her cheeks. "It's you!" He flashed a genuine, if not a little discombobulated smile, which banished the dimples from her cheeks. "Is this what you meant?!"
Her expression soured, as eyes of disappointment met Ryan's awkward grin. "Yeah, and you didn't exactly come through."
If Ryan's head wasn't so hazy, he would have felt severe disappointment.
His mom studied the two newcomers cautiously and suspiciously, as she said. "I guess, I'll go and get a doughnut. Maybe a little coffee, it is five in the morning."
As Ryan's mother was leaving, a nurse popped in, "I'm here to take you're vitals!" She sounded way too enthusiastic for five in the morning. The middle aged man turned towards the nurse, and displayed the badge. And her happy face turned to one of shock and horror. "Oh! Well, I'll be back later." She turned a wary eye towards Ryan, and shot out of the room.
When she left, the man's demeanor changed, originally he appeared almost happy-go-lucky. Now, he turned serious although he didn't look stern, more like Ryan's father when he tried to explain something to the teen. "How's the head kid?"
Ryan's vision came into better focus, realizing that there was a TV hanging from the wall. Next to the TV was a printed painting of birds. They were red breasted, so he assumed they were robins. Ryan also realized there was an IV in his arm and he was hooked up to an EKG. "I don't know how I feel really... everything's blurry. I'm not sure why I'm here."
