The next hour and ten minutes went smoothly. Ryan had turned his phone off, and Mai had told him a lot about herself. She was five when she moved from China. Her father was a computer programmer and worked in Seattle for Microsoft.
Ryan, in turn, told Mai about his parents and his sister. He also sprinkled facts about Damon, being very careful not to mention the modifications to the Four Runner. He realized that he would soon, just not today. He didn't know if Director Johnson would approve.
Along with Mai's conversation, came the buzz of the streets. The clamor wasn't solely the noise and bustle created by passing motorists, emergency vehicles and nearby construction workers. There were tons of Random thoughts clouding Ryan's mind, as he listened to Mai. He could attribute the thoughts to the correct people passing on the walks by simply watching their faces. 'If the city appropriates the funds, we'll be able to begin work on Sunday.'
'Something's going on with her, she's never been that hostile in public. I think Angie's afraid of her.'
'He keeps pushing us, when are we going to see results? You can't run a business on Ideals. Seriously, there's a lot of sheep in this corporation.'
'I want an attractive secretary. Somebody that will make Elle Jealous. Payback.'
'If he says that one more time, I'm going to put that SOB in his place.'
'I wish everyday was as beautiful as this, what a lovely city."
At about 5:40 Ryan sensed a thought. "This is going to be a big score for me. I should work with this dude all the time." Automatically, as Mai was talking about her first moments in kindergarten, and how frightening not being able to speak English was, Ryan knew that Louie Reghetti was approaching the Hard Rock Cafe.
"We need to go," Ryan said.
Mai, who had her eyes fixed on the entrance, turned to Ryan, quite startled. "How do you...."
"I told you, I can sense him." Ryan said.
He threw his hot dog trays and soda cup away and leaped over the small fence. Mai followed. Without the use of the cross walk, they rambled through traffic and into the destination Restaurant.
They made it into the sleek black entrance of the Restaurant. Quickly, Mai reached the hostess stand, and rather hurriedly approached the attractive black woman behind the wood podium, "Reservations for Revere."
The lady smiled and looked down at an Ipad, " let's see. Ok reservations for Revere from 4:30 till....close? The woman appeared as if she had received a slight blow to the head, and was trying to shake it off. "Is that right?"
Mai nodded. "Yes, that's right."
"Right this way." The dining room was huge and quite crowded today. A large drum set, used by the band Styx, sat behind the bar. Tons of guitars and other Rock memorabilia graced the walls. The dining floor was tiered, with an upper portion along the outside walls and a lower portion in the center.
Mai and Ryan followed their hostess to a small table with four chairs. The table was conveniently nestled in the corner of the lower portion. Mai pulled out her seat and looked at the hostess, "Tell the waiter, or waitress, we want two of the best burgers you have. With cokes."
"Oh, you can tell him that when he gets here."
Mai turned cold and demanding, "I need you to tell him that. So please follow my orders," She warned.
