Kaen's POV

"S-show you my wings?"

"Yep. You said you didn't want them out because you didn't trust anyone... but you trust me."

"Kaen, I don't know... I haven't even seen them myself in years... they're probably so ugly now."

"And if they are, so what? I just want to help you overcome your fears. You have amazing affinities—you deserve to be able to use them. I don't want you to be scared anymore. I'm always going to protect you."

She sighs, "You're right... I do deserve to be able to use them again. I'm tired of being so damn scared all the time."She closes her eyes as shaky breaths leave her mouth. "Okay. I'm gonna do it. Here goes nothing..."

"It's okay, don't be scared. I'm right here." I take her hands in mine, squeezing them gently.

I watch her concentrated face as sparkles start to emerge from her back; An array of different colors, each particle sparkling brighter than the last. It's unlike anything I've ever seen before. They grow bigger and bigger, then finally stop.

"Wow."

"What is it? Are they ugly? Tiny? What?"

"Ash... they're beautiful."

She opens her eyes, and peers over her shoulder to look at them, "Oh, my god." She runs over to the big mirror displayed in the hallway, "Holy shit." Her eyes light up while looking at her wings, and I fucking love the sight of it.

"They're... different. They're so much bigger than they were before." She flutters her wings, "Let's go outside."

"Are you going to fly?"

"I'm gonna try to."

She starts to flutter her wings, lifting her feet off the ground a bit. She gasps, "Did you see that?"

"Mhm. You can do it, I know you can."

She's suddenly lifted higher in the air, "I'm... I'm flying again! I can't believe it!"

She flies back and forth above me, looking effortlessly graceful.

This is the happiest I've ever seen her. I want her to stay like this forever. It warmed my heart so much— she deserves it more than anyone.

She slowly comes back down to the ground, landing gently. "I can't believe I just did that. They didn't even feel weak, it's like they were completely brand new and as if nothing ever happened to them." The smile on her face was bigger than a kid's on Christmas, "I feel... amazing."

I pull her into a hug and kiss her head, "I knew you could do it. I'm so proud of you."

"Thank you... so much. I couldn't have done this without you, Kaen. It means everything to me."

"Of course. You know I'm always gonna be right here, no matter what." I smile at her, placing a kiss on her lips.

"You wanna try it?"

"Try what?"

"Flying."

"How am I gonna fly?"

"I'm gonna carry you. Don't worry, I won't drop you. Come on."

"I don't know about this, Ash."

"Aw, don't tell me that the big, bad Kaen is scared of heights?"

"What? I am not!"

"Then let's go."

She grabs me from behind under my arms and lifts us into the air. "Woah... holy shit."
