Kurt sat in his bed, curled into Blaine's side as the other boy held him close and rubbed his arms now and again for comfort. They'd been like that for an hour, having gone straight upstairs when they got in because both Burt and Carole were at work, so they didn't need to explain themselves to anyone. Kurt still hadn't spoke, he just sat quietly as he held the broken shoes in his hands, an occasional sniffle sounded from his reddened nose. Blaine had put on the TV, playing a random movie in the background but neither of them were watching. Kurt was looking at his shoes and Blaine was looking at Kurt - both feeling the same; helpless. After another half hour or so, Blaine let out a deep sigh and his hands stilled on the boy, causing him to spare a glance upwards before looking away again.

"You can go if you want..." Kurt whispered suddenly causing Blaine's eyes to widen.

"Why would I leave you?" Blaine asked confused, "Kurt you're upset, I'm not going to leave you" he explained when Kurt shrugged softly under his hold, "Ever" Blaine added causing the taller boy to tighten his grip on the shoes.

Kurt was silent for a moment before he curled closer into Blaine and wrapped an arm around his waist as he whispered "Thank you" before nuzzling into his boyfriend shirt.

Blaine squeezed Kurt's arm and rested his chin gently on Kurt's hair, inhaling the scent of his shampoo and the smell that was purely Kurt, a mixture of vanilla and coffee.

"You know.. we can get you a new pair Kurt..." Blaine whispered softly after a few more minutes of silence.

"I-I know.. it's just..." Kurt began, stuttering slightly, Blaine gave him a reassuring squeeze and a kiss on his forehead to encourage him to continue, "They were my first pair and.. my mum bought me them..." he sniffled out, silent tears running down his pale cheeks.

It all made sense now. Kurt wasn't just crying because the school had found out, because he was physically hurt from being pushed around, from the shoes being broke - it was because they were bought for him by his mum.

"Tell me about her..?" Blaine asked, resting his cheek on Kurt's soft chestnut hair.

Kurt pushed back slightly to look at Blaine who reluctantly moved when Kurt did to return his gaze.

"I wanna hear more about her..." Blaine explained with his charming smile that made Kurt's stomach flutter with butterflies and his cheeks to tinge red.

Kurt smiled sadly back before moving from his position, ignoring the sad and almost pained squeak Blaine made from not having Kurt there anymore, before sitting next to Blaine, his back against the headboard as he rested his head on Blaine's shoulder, Blaine gently resting his on Kurt's in return and taking his hand, intertwining their fingers.

Kurt paused, taking a moment to appreciate Blaine and how comforting he had been, his thoughts flicked back to a time when he didn't have Blaine in his life, and it felt like a distant memory or a bad dream that he never wanted to be true.

He squeezed Blaine's hand and let out a heavy sigh before recalling whatever happy memories with his mum he could, before smiling softly.

"Where to start..." he sighed, his tone sad but underlined with joy.

A four year old Kurt walked up the large staircase, his mum holding his hand gently as she shifted her gaze from the front to her side, making sure her son was okay and being pleasantly amused when she was either greeted with him smiling back at her, or when she saw him staring down, his tongue sticking out the corner of his mouth as he concentrated on climbing.
