"No!"
Jiaqi's screams could be heard from a mile away as the car collided with her lover's body.
A few minutes before, they'd been walking on the sidewalk together. She'd noticed that the young blonde had been acting strange, not entirely sure what was going on when they suddenly stopped. Her hazelnut orbs filled with worry as she watched Yuyan check the street before kissing her hard.
"I love you. Stay safe."
And then Yuyan jumped in front of the oncoming car.
Jiaqi was in shock but now, Now she needs to act. Her beloved Yuyan is lying in the street, covered in blood. She has to do something. Anything.
But she can't. She wants to run into the road, to collect her darling in her arms. But she can't force herself to move. She just stands on the sidewalk, staring, waiting for something to happen. Her thoughts are blurring, and she can hardly tell if what just happened was actually real life.
The thing that brings her back to reality is the driver of the car. He's leaning over her baby, getting ready to lay a hand on her shoulder.
"Don't touch her!" Jiaqi shouted at the guy
He stops. Looks up. Says something that she doesn't catch.
And finally, she wills herself to step off the sidewalk and walk toward him. "She's breathing," he says.
It's said in a single, short breath as she drops to the ground. "Call an ambulance."
As the man walks away, cell phone pressed to his ear, she allows herself to pull her lover's head into her lap, gently wiping blood from the Yuyan's cheeks.
Deep brown eyes attempt to open, fighting against the weakness of the body. A slight groan of pain. A full body shudder, and heavy, shaky breath.
"Shhhhh, baby..... It's alright...." Jiaqi runs a hand down the blondes cheek, carefully placing a kiss on her
forehead. "Everything's alright."The ambulance doesn't show up for at least five minutes, but it feels like five hours. With every passing second, her love is getting closer to death.
Only when the red and blue lights are close enough to blind her and the siren loud enough to deafen her does she move. Slowly but surely, she rises with her dearest in her arms, hugging the small girl tightly against her body.
A wave of panic goes through her as a woman in a paramedic's uniform tries to take her baby lion away from her. But the woman is understanding, and explains herself. "It's alright, sweetie, we're going to take her to the hospital and fix her up. She's going to be just fine."
She's going to be just fine.
And although she doesn't believe them, those words provide some comfort. Carefully, she allows the paramedics to place her young lover onto the stretcher and load it into the back of the ambulance.
"W-wait." The paramedic stops halfway through closing the door, and they just stare at each other for a few seconds. Receiving the message, she opens it again, allowing the terrified brunette to climb inside.
The entire ride, she refuses to let go of the tiny hand she has clutched in her grasp. She squeezes as hard as she can every few seconds, reminding herself that her love is still there.
And as they near the hospital, one phrase is repeating inside her head, over and over again "I'm sorry."
Just as everything else, she blames herself for this. Blames herself that she didn't see it coming or pay enough attention to her girlfriend's change in behaviour.
"I'm sorry...."
Terrified out of her wits, she paces the waiting room floor. She's still repeating her apologies to the one who stole her heart, and is so lost in her thoughts that it catches her off guard when a young woman touches her shoulder.
Her thoughts snaps up and she jumps away from the contact. Hazelnut orbs met chocolate brown. "I-I'm sorry, ma'am. I just... you look distressed, and I was wondering if you'd want to talk? Get your mind off of it?"
She relaxes her body, letting out a sigh. When she speaks, her voice is hoarse and rough. "Yes, thank you."
They sit down next to each other, the girl's eyes filled with sadness and concern. "My little brother is in there. He fell out of a tree, and might have broken a few bones. I'm worried about him." She looks up, the smallest hint of a reassuring smile on his lips. "Name's Xiaotang by the way, What about you?"
"I- my girlfriend..." Jiaqi looks her in the eyes and she stares back. "God, she jumped in front of a car."
Her face falls into her hands as tears start to flow.
A hand is placed on her back, but she hardly takes notice of it. The Chocolate brown-eyes girl sits with her as she cries out all of her tears, and she cries more and harder than she ever has. The girl who never lets anyone see her cry
When she finally stops crying, the girl says that he needs to go, that his brother is fine. She doesn't care. She only cares that her lover is alive and well.
Her thoughts consume her again, anxiety spiking. She sits in the waiting room alone, her knees drawn to her chest and hands covering her ears. "Please. Please. Please. Please be okay, baby, please. I need you, please..."
A nurse appears. Jiaqi gently removes her hands and allows her to drop her feet to the floor. The nurse doesn't look very happy. His dark face shows concern and much more sadness than that of the Xiaotang girl.
She's on her feet now, looking at him with fear.
"Miss, I hate to inform you that your--"
"No. No. No. No! No!" She screams, the nurse's shirt bunched in her fists. "She's not dead, she's not! Stop lying to me!"
She cries. She cries, and she doesn't stop crying. She begs to see her lover one last time, and the nurse reluctantly allows her access to the room.
She slowly walks into the room, tears falling down her cheeks. "Babe....?" The girl in the bed isn't recognizable. Missing the usual glow and warmth of her beloved Yuyan. The smile she fell in love with is nowhere to be seen.
Shaking, she picks up a small, cold hand and presses her lips to the knuckles. "I love you, baby."
She can't think. Can't feel. But she keeps talking anyway. "I don't see why... I don't see why you did it. I just don't understand. But I do know that I can't live without you."
She knows the girl she loved wouldn't want this for her. But she can't go on without her only. "We're going to be together forever, my love. I promise."
After speaking the last promise she'll ever make, she slowly retrieves a bottle of pills from the cabinet.
Lying on the bed next to her lover, she watches the world fade to nothing.
"Together forever."
