"I'm not in the mood Andrew." I rolled my eyes as he dropped the basketball onto the floor of the office.
"You've been working non-stop for the last three days. You need to eat, drink, sleep and do something else. You barely even take a break long enough to breathe."
"I'm busy." I walked past him and grabbed a pile of papers that needed to be filed.
"No you're not. You're doing everyone else's job. You've done everything nobody else has anything to do because of you." He grabbed my arm.
"I don't care. Let me know when Dave calls. He's supposed to let me know what the autopsy says.. He should've called me yesterday." I mumbled as I shook him off of me.
"Oh.. he called earlier this morning. He said he was going to fax over the autopsy report since you were unavailable."
"And you're just now telling me?" I screamed dropping the papers.
"I've been busy trying to keep you alive! The report is sitting on your desk."
"Dammit Andrew!" I yelled running away from him and into my office. Sitting on my desk was a file. Nothing written on it. It was the only thing sitting on my desk. I began to shake as I sat down and opened it and began reading.
'The patient was a 20 year old Caucasian female with no significant past medical history who was stranded in a burning building. No one was aware of her location until she was found completely burned, her head detached'
I took a deep breath before looking lower.
'LUNGS: The right lung weighed 694 grams, the left weighed 687 grams. The lung parenchyma is pink without evidence of smoke inhalation.'
If she died in the fire.. She should have had smoke in her lungs? In an attempt to satisfy my confusion, I continued to read.
'SUMMARY AND REFLECTION:
What I learned from this autopsy: I learned that although this woman burned in a fire, there's no traces of smoke in her lungs or trachea. The entirety of her neck, throat to the top of her trachea, is missing entirely. This patient was also missing most of the blood from her body.
Remaining unanswered questions: Basically the cause of death is undetermined. Foul play is believed to play a part in her death. Once her neck is retrieved, I believe a better examination will determine the cause of death.'
She didn't have her neck? She was missing blood? My own blood started to boil as I grabbed my phone and called my father.
"Threx? What is it?" He asked annoyed.
"You told me about mythological creatures. Are they all trapped in Empurity still?"
"What makes you ask that all of a sudden?" He sounded concerned.
"I need to know. Has any of the creatures come back to earth?" I clenched my fists.
"I don't know. I've been trying to keep out of that. Tell me what happened and I can see what I can find out."
"Jace was killed dad.. First I found out she was in a fire but then the autopsy... I'll send it to you and you can read it.. I can't say it but.. I need to know if a vampire was the cause of her death."
"You need to take a little break. I'll do what I can to to find out what happened but I need you to calm down. I can't afford you going on a murder spree. Remember what I did when my love was taken from me. I regret all the pain and suffering I caused, I do not wish you the same fate I made myself endure."
