She knew that he loved her. It was snowing that day, a chill that rattled you to the bone no matter how many layers you layered. And boy did she love layering. She pestered him about the scarves and gloves and hats too. No boyfriend of hers was catching an unnecessary cold. Not when she had a say in it.He just let her dress him up like a doll. Seeing her smile brought him so much genuine joy, you'd think she could do no wrong. And I guess back then, she was young and naive. The wrongs didn't seem as big as they do now.
So now they were playing in the snow. Glove-clad fingers and freezing toes. The ice melted in the various spots where it splat on one or the other's body. The park was filled with kids, also covered in snow. Anxious parents with cooling cups of coffee, watched from the sides.
The ground was so soft and pure you'd really think the angels down there would actually fly away and to heaven. They didn't though. Instead they remained a reminder that for a moment someone was there and they had fallen on purpose.
They had fun on purpose.
They had loved on purpose.
Suddenly she had shot up from her snowy angel and pointed to the little bridge. The wooden structure spanned across a small pond that had frozen over.
"Look!" An eager giddiness flowed in her step. It was where he had given her a special note.
He watched from behind as she strolled to the bridge. Strong hands on her hips she marveled at the sight. While he marveled at her. He knew no one else so sure of themselves and so courageous and so beautiful all at once. He was proud to know her and all the parents that watched the two could see it as well.
He hoped neither of them would ever have to leave.
"It's where I said yes," still she stood amazed at the little bridge.
He came from behind and tucked his face in her neck. Barely he could reach it because of earlier mentioned scarves but eventually a soft kiss was placed there.
She knew that he loved her.
He chuckled outwardly and in the air the laughs formed as fog.
"I know I'm the one that asked, cool cat,"
"That name is so stupid,"
"Your shoe's untied,"
Without a thought he squatted down at her feet and laced her boot back up. She hadn't noticed because she was too busy racing 5th graders down hills on sleds. And falling to the ground on purpose. Throwing snowballs at the boy she loved. Loving him on purpose.
She knew that he loved her.
And he always will.
