AGAIN AND AGAIN // marcus abbott

chapter 8: flashlight

day 473

i follow the sand path around the fields looking for lee, marcus, or regan. as i walk through the corn field i see a bright light coming out of the cornstalks. i follow the light to see a path through the long corn. i reach the end of the path to see a tractor. i look down to my right and see an unconscious marcus with a flashlight in his hand. i kneel down to him in hopes of waking him up.
i hold his head on my lap, shaking him to wake him up. after a minute or so he wakes up and gives me a hug. "don't scare me like that ever again!" i sign. "i missed you y/n," marcus signed back. i sign, "we should stay here until someone comes to get us." marcus nods in agreement and grabs my hand. i fall asleep on marcus's shoulder, relieved to be with him again.

i'm awoken by marcus shaking me, i open my eyes to see regan standing right in front of us. we all hug eachother happy that we are all safe. "we need to get to the silo and light a fire," regan signs. regan starts toward the silo and marcus and i follow.

we reach the silo and we climb up the ladder. regan goes first, marcus after her, and i'm last. we make it to the top of the silo and regan starts the fire. marcus and i watch over the side of the silo as regan keeps the fire going. fifteen minutes later we turn around to see regan looking at us defeated with a burnt out fire. i turn back around to look over the silo. i think about evelyn and lee. i wonder where lee is and if evelyn is okay.

a few minutes later i hear a creaking sound and i turn around. i see marcus walking around the silo and the next thing i know he falls through. i run towards the hole in the silo and look down to see marcus drowning in the grain. i look up at regan and she looks at me. we have the same idea and we both jump down to save marcus. as soon as we jump down, the metal that marcus fell through fell into the silo.
i struggle to keep my head up, but i keep moving my arms to search for marcus. i feel his hand grasp mine and i try to pull him up free. i see regan push the metal towards me and i jump on pulling marcus behind me. i look to the other side searching for regan and i see her head going down into the grain. i move across the metal and pull her up onto the metal. i take a deep breath and lie down exhausted.

i sit up hearing some creaking coming from outside the silo. marcus looks at regan and i and puts a finger to his mouth telling us to be quiet. a minute later one of those creatures drop down into the silo behind regan. we all crawl away from it and flip the metal on top of us. i look to marcus with tears in my eyes thinking this is it. the creature is clawing through the metal on top of us and then it abruptly stops. i look up from the metal to see a hole on the side of the silo where the creature exited.

we all jump out of the silo through the hole on at a time, careful not to make any noise. i jump out and see a moving figure coming towards us. i realize that it's lee and i point over to him to tell marcus and regan that he's coming. he runs towards us and we all huh relieved to be all together again.
