It had been a week since you left and ventured out into the true sea with sturmhonds crew.

You stood next to the darkling on a ship in the middle of the true sea, pursuing the sea whip. "I hate it here" you groaned "what would you prefer?" asked the darkling. "To be back at the little palace, in my room". "Why wouldn't you want to be in my room?" the darkling questioned "I don't need to want to be in your room" you snapped "I don't want to make a scene" he sneered pulling you closer to him.

"Sorry for the interruption" said Sturmhond "what is it pirate" said the darkling "privateer, but y/n is requested by Ge. . .". "Genya" you chuckled, "I'll be back" you said to the darkling, you nodded to Sturmhond and walked down the staircase and down another one that led to the cabins.

You pushed open the cabins to find Genya, Ivan and Alina all awake inside. "Help me with the water" said Genya, holding Alina up. You grabbed a small cup and scooped water from a small basin in the corner of the room. You walked back over to Genya and began to tilt the cup towards Alinas lips so she could drink. "What is it?" she asked "just water".

Alina tried to move her arms to grab the cup but they were held in iron clamps, so she couldn't use her powers. "Slowly" you said, titling the liquid into her mouth, "or you'll make yourself sick". "How long? How long have I been out?" she asked, "a week" you replied. Alina felt a wave of nausea just thinking about Ivan putting her in and out of consciousness.

Alina shoved to her feet, blood rushed throughout her body and to her head. She would have fallen over if you and Genya had not held her up. She pushed you both off of her and made her way to the small glass window that faced the ocean. When she looked out all she saw was blue, the vast ocean was everywhere, it consumed all. "Where's Mal?" she demanded, but there was no answer, "where is he!".

"The darkling wants to see you" said Ivan "are you strong enough to walk or do I have to carry you?". "Give her some time" you and Genya snapped, "have a meal, or even another drink-". "No, take me to see him" she said.

Ivan walked out of the room and up the staircase, with everyone following him. Alina gagged at the smell, "what is that?" she asked "blood, bone, rendered blubber" said Ivan "you get used to it". "You get used to it" snapped Genya, wrinkling her nose that the stench. The sailors wore roughspun or what most called peasant wear. The girsha were still all wearing their bright colored keftas, Genya wore a red kefta stitched with blue.

You passed two massive cast iron pots, Alina gagged once more as the stench wafted up, "the try pots haven't been used in years but the smell never fades". Ivan led you to the prow where the darkling was posted, he stood with his back to you, his black kefta billowing around him like an inky banner of war.

Genya and Ivan bowed and left right after. You walked over to him and placed yourself next to him. "Wheres mal?" Alina rasped, he didnt turn but he laughed and shook his head. "You're predictable at least", "so sorry to bore you. Where is he" she snapped. "And how do you know he isnt dead?" he asked, Alina felt nascuses again.

"Because I know you". "And if he were, would you throw yourself into the sea?" he taunted, "only if I could take you with me" she snapped. "But if you did, you'd hurt him" he cooed pulling your body into his. "Where is he?" she demanded, "turn around".

Alina spun on her heel and searched the ship. She found Mal sitting next to coils of rope, flanked by corporalki guards, but his focus was on her. He had been waiting for her, for her to turn. Alina stepped forward but the darkling sized her hand. "No farther". "Let me talk to him" she begged, "not a chance, you two have a bad habit of acting like imbeciles and calling it heroic".

The darkling waved his hand and the corporalki guards picked Mal up and started to lead him away. "Alina!" he yelled, but the guard knocked him in the face, his body faulted as they dragged him away. "Mal!" she screamed as he was taken below deck.

Alina pulled herself out of the darklings grip, her throat choked with rage, "if you hurt him-". "I'm not going to hurt him" he said "at least not while he can be of use to me". "I dont want him harmed" she  demanded, "he's safe Alina, but if one of you steps out of line, the other shall suffer. I've already told him the same.

"You two make it so easy. I prick him, you bleed" he said, shaking his head. You stared out at the open sea, while Alina and the darkling continued to bicker. "And you cant begin to understand that, can you?". He reached out and traced his fingers along Morozovas collar, as their skin touched Alina felt a rush of power, their deep connection.

"Oh I do understand". "I want to see him" said Alina, "every day, I want to know he's safe". "Of course. I'm not cruel Alina, just cautious". "Is that why he's scarred? Is that why you had one of those things bite me?" she laughed, "that's not why". "That was never meant to happen to him. Like I said, you're the reason for that".

"You're with him but yet you still chose to come after me, that night at the fete-" she snapped. "The fete?" you asked, turning around, "what happened at the fete" you demanded. "Nothing my love" said the darkling, cupping your face with one hand "nothing at all". "Liar. you kissed me".

You froze. You pulled away from the darkling and stared at him. "You kissed her?" you asked, "she forced me into it, she wanted to hurt you" he said, grabbing your hands with his. "I would never do anything to hurt you on purpose". "So you're cruel and a liar".

"Are you believing her?" he snapped "I'm the one you love, I'm the one who chose to look after you and chose to give you my love. I was there for you when the sobachka left, I was the one who made you feel happy and loved. But even after everything I did, you decide to believe her, some girl whom you hardly even know". "Go" he sneered "I don't want to see you. You pushed past him and made your way back down the cabins, as tears swelled in your eyes. "Hey, are you okay?" asked Sturmhond, but you kept going.
