Heartbreak

Today is the first day of the inter-high preliminaries. The team is surprisingly calm—aside from Hinata, but I don't think he has the ability to be calm. You keep hearing people making comments about Karasuno being 'flightless crows' to which you respond with your Sawamura glare. Every time you do, you get a whack on your head from your older brother. 'I'm trying to protect our team,' you pout. 'Don't worry, we'll prove them all wrong soon,' he replies with a smile. You relax a little. Suddenly you notice Noya and Tanaka circling you and Kiyoko protectively. 'Uhm... guys?' you say. Kiyoko hits them and tells them to stop, and they comply. You suddenly become nervous. There are so many people...

You have two matches today, one against Tokonami and one against Date Tech. Before the first match against Tokonami, the team is getting ready when you hear your phone ding. The message says 'Good luck today😘' to which you reply with 'thank you 😊❤️' and Daichi sees this... Daichi just smiles at you—scarily. Welp, if I wasn't nervous before I am now. You tell the team good luck and sit beside Kiyoko, ready to take notes.

~after both matches~

You won both matches! As you congratulated and tried to hype up your team, you hear a chorus of squeals. You turn to see where it came from. Bruh. Oikawa fangirls. Thank God, you thought. Maybe he won't notice you with all these girls around. You try to sneak away when you hear a 'Y/n channnn~'. Fuck. You turn back around to find Oikawa waving at you, earning glares from his fangirls. You sigh and wave back. You watch him celebrate a little before he returned his focus to the match he was playing. You didn't want to admit it because he's so annoying, but he played beautifully. While the team was watching Seijoh, you decided to take extra notes on how they play, both to help the team and to improve your own playing.

You have not played volleyball for a while due to focussing on the boys' team, but it doesn't bother you since you've been learning a tonne even without playing. You played with a local college team but never participated in tournaments since you're still in high school. You decided to play with them until you finished high school to join a team at the college you chose to go to. For now, you are working to help your brother achieve his goal of going to nationals. You were inching closer and closer to achieving it too... but first, you must beat Seijoh.

Before you enter the bus, you hand out the notes. The team looked so tired so you tell them to look through them at home. As soon as you sit on the bus the entire team fell asleep. They're so cute. You text Kuroo about your day before joining the boys and taking a short nap.

~the next day~

'Y/n chaaan~' Oh God. Here we go again. 'Hello, Oikawa san.' You try your best to be polite for the sake of your team. 'After I win today, I'm taking you on a date~' he announces without asking you. 'No,' you reply. Iwaizumi chuckles in the back. 'Hey Iwaizumi san,' you greet him waving. He waves back. Oikawa pouts in the back. 'Y/n chan, we are going to win, and when we do you have to give me something,' he says still pouting. He was not going to let you go without agreeing. 'Maybe. But you won't win,' you say smugly. You walk off towards your team. 'You guys better win or Oikawa's going to force me on a date or something—I don't know, he said I have to give him something. Please PLEASE win,' you say seriously, sending shivers down the spines of the first and second years. Daichi and the third years look fired up. This is it...

And... Karasuno lost. The match was so close, it could've gone either way. You were so proud of your team for going as far as they did. You could see the heartbreak in their eyes. You could feel it. Your heart was breaking for them... You knew that trying to console them would not help right away so you decide to talk to them later. Kageyama walked up to you and bowed. 'I'm sorry y/n san, we couldn't win,' he almost whispered. Uhm... what? 'Kageyama... why are you apologising to me? I'm so proud of you!! All of you played beautifully. You guys came so close which only means next time you'll beat them for sure! Stop apologising Kageyama, you didn't do anything wrong,' you say laughing. You ruffle his hair and give him a warm smile. He looks like he's about to cry, poor thing... 'Let's get going,' you say, smiling at him. He gave you a weak smile and followed you out. You suddenly hear an annoying voice coming from behind you. 'Y/n channn~ I told you I would winnn!' Not now... 'Well done,' you tell the brown-haired third-year with a black face. 'You don't sound sincere in the slightest,' he says, clutching his chest like he was hurt. 'I'm just tired. I'm going home now-' 'WAIT-' Oikawa interrupts you, 'I won so you have to give me something.' Oh no, I was hoping he forgot. 'I said maybe, not yes,' you say coldly. You know he won't let you go if you don't comply. You sigh 'what do you want?' 'A ki-' 'I'm not kissing you,' you cut him off. 'Fine, a hug?' he suggested. 'I don't feel like hugging right now.' You were not lying. You actually wanted to hug the boys on your bus and that's it, no one else. After some back and forth, Oikawa asked for you to let him buy you meat buns. '...Custard buns.' His eyes lit up. 'Deal!' he shouted before saying goodbye and running off calling Iwa chan.

You get on the bus and sit beside Kageyama, something you don't do often, but he seems to be taking the outcome of the match the worst. You didn't talk at all on the ride back. You hoped that this feeling wouldn't last long. You missed the hyperactive boys who used to sit with you on this bus.

Once you get home, you tell Kuroo everything. He cheered you up and told you that there'd still be a chance to get your brother to nationals. He's right. There was still a chance. Instead of crying about it, you should be focussing on making it happen this time. I WILL make it happen this time.
