that week went by rather quickly. some days it would rain and others the sun would shine down on us. the days it would rain i'd spend with my mother and those with the shining sun i'd spend with mathias and his sister, leila.

leila looked a lot like her brother, same dark orbs for eyes and adorable unbrushed fluffy eyebrows with a brown bob-cut. leila wore bright blue glasses and had a beautiful mole on her cheek, right below the corner of her left eye.

mathias and leila were studying agriculture, they planned on talking after their grandfather's farm which was odd since their father had worked so hard to leave the country life and work in finance.

our last visit was spent with us laying under the shade of the tree near our old high school with leila's head in my lap and mine resting on mathias' shoulder.

the two of us sat listening to leila go on about this boy she'd been talking to and how dreamy he supposedly was. me and mathias doubted it and we would later stand correct.

when the summer heat got unbearable, we made our way to mathias' shed and sat with the outdoor cooler on blast. leila excused herself to use the restroom and as she left i saw her glace at mathias.

the first few minutes were filled with silence. he bounced his knee a little as both of us stared at the ground.

"when will you be back?" he broke the silence.

"soon," i said, "hopefully."

he nodded with a tiny smile on his face, "i'll visit you in the city next time i'm there."

i grinned and nodded excitedly, "please do, the city's so mean to me," i added without much thought.

mathias' eyes softened, it was like he knew exactly what i meant. "the city's eyes can get really sharp and pointy," he stated matter of factly and before i knew it we were looking at each other in the eyes, his gaze meeting mine at the exact same moment.

"yeah it's," i didn't know what to say, he'd taken the words right out of my mouth.

before i could find the right words, leila returned with her hands patting the sides of her skirt, "what do you guy's wanna eat? pizza maybe?"

the evening was much cooler, all we needed was a pedestal fan. leila made some drinks to cool us down and though they tasted weird they got the job done.

mathias didn't look me in the eyes till the next morning when my parents walked me to the station and he sat on a bench there waiting for us.

"sorry i didn't know when your train left so i came here as early as i could" he had said and i just stood there in shock. did he plan to sit there all day?

i hugged my parents goodbye and kissed my siblings on the forehead before they left to get back home, leaving me with mathias once more.

"i'll head back too," he said, eyes staring right back into mine, almost as if they were searching for something, "see you around."

"thank you mathias" i quickly said almost like a word vomit, and he smiled at me.

mathias had a genuine smile, the kind that would crinkle the corner of his eyes and you couldn't help but smile too.

he looked back at me one last time, his smile faltering slightly. i wasn't sure what to say so i just stood there staring right back at him, not sure what emotions were displayed on my face and in my eyes.

when i arrived home, naznina was cooking something in the kitchen. the heat from the food was causing the apartment to gather humidity, which, accompanied by the summer heat was unbearable.
