The eerie laughing calls of the viperwolves grew closer, and Jake's anxiousness grew bigger, and my patience grew smaller. He had torn his jacket to shreds and wrapped them into a huge ball, placing it at the dull end of his spear, and then he dipped it in the sap of a nearby tree. He pulled out a box of matches, and as the viperwolves grew closer, he frantically tried to light one, once, twice, three times, his head darting around all the while before I scoffed and I pulled the box of matches out of hand, lighting a match with almost no effort. Jake sent me an annoyed glare and I shot a deadpan stare at him. I lit the torch and the sap engulfed in flames almost immediately, and Jake swiped the fire at the viperwolves. "Jake, stop! You'll--" But Jake had already backed away from the creatures, crossing a small stream, only to be cornered by the animals. "Rei, stay back!" I sprinted to catch up to him, barely missing the nips of the viperwolves on my heels. They were toying with us, sending calls to each other as they seemed to hype each other up. Then one lunged at Jake, which he hit with the flaming end of the torch. The poor creature yelped and retreated behind my legs. I stroked the sleek back of the viperwolf momentarily in comfort, whispering something soothing in Na'vi before crying out to Jake.
"Jake, stop!" I cried. But Jake ignored me. "I don't have all goddamn night! COME ON! COME ON!!" Jake screamed, provoking the pack. The burnt viperwolf ran back to it's pack now, whimpering in fear and pain. A bigger viperwolf examined its sibling's wound before snarling in anger. These animals did not appreciate it's sibling being injured by Jake. With a screech, they all attacked in a blur, careful to avoid me. Jake cracked his spear on one, then spun around to kick another. Another jumped onto him, and he planted the spear into its chest. I screamed, and I charged at Jake, wrenching the torch/spear out of his hand, also gently wrestling the viperwolf off of him. I threw the torch down onto the ground. "REI, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!" Jake screamed at me. "THEY DON'T DESERVE TO DIE! THEY'RE JUST-'' But Jake shoved me to the ground, pulling out a dagger and hissing. "JAKE, NO!" I cried, struggling to get up. Another creature attacked him, and he grabbed the creature by the scruff and brutally stabbed him repeatedly, the pained and fearful screams of the viperwolf as it was stabbed to death causing rising panic and fear in my chest. I was nearing hysterics. "Jake, STOP!" I screamed, my ears doing flat, tears welling up in my eyes, blurring my vision as I attempted to stop him.
Jake sprinted away in an attempt to escape, only to be attacked by yet another viperwolf, and just as his face was about to be torn to shreds, an arrow flew past my ear and planted into the back of the viperwolf. The viperwolf let out a cry of surprise and pain before dropping dead on top of Jake. Jake shoved the viperwolf off of him, panting as he made a move to stab it, but then a flash of blue blurred past him as it shot two more viperwolves, fluid and sure motions, crying out fierce battle cries as she smacked another on the skull. Another pounced onto her, causing her to collapse under its weight, but she spun around, stabbing the viperwolf repeatedly, as the native grunted and cried in what sounded like sadness and anger. I winced at the cries and yowls of the wolves as they retreated, and I helped Jake up, but then slapped him across the face, hard. "YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE! YOU SHOULD'VE LISTENED TO ME!" I screamed, tears now running down my face. Jake blinked in surprise, touching the place where I slapped him, before I whipped around, my hair slapping him slightly in the face as I stalked away, flipping him off before stopping a few feet away to collect myself. I heard the rustling of leaves as the native woman picked up the torch off the ground. "Ignorant dreamwalkers." She grumbled, before tossing it into a pool of water. "Hey wait, don't--" The flames hissed to a stop, causing Jake to groan. "Great." He grumbled, as he moved to retrieve his torch/spear. The native woman crouched down next to a dead viperwolf, mumbling a prayer to Eywa to deliver the viperwolves' soul to the afterlife as she pulled out the arrow planted in its chest.
She perks up at the pained cry of another viperwolf, and she moves towards the poor creature. The native now caught my attention, and I moved closer to her. She pulled out her dagger and she whispered a small prayer to Eywa as she pulled open the flaps of skin covering its heart. "Forgive me, my brother." She mumbled to the poor animal, its whimpering growing louder. "I'm sorry it had to end this way, my friend." I said to the animal quietly. The whimpers went to a stop as the native stabbed their heart, ending its misery. I realized this native was familiar, and the two pieces clicked in my mind. Oh shit. This was Neytiri, of the Omaticaya clan. We were screwed. "Look, um," Jake started, crouching down next to Neytiri. I hissed at him, shooting a glare at his stupid face. Jake flinched, but didn't move. "I know you probably don't understand this, but-- thanks. Thank you. I owe you." Neytiri ignored him, assuming the prayer position over the dead body of the viperwolf. "Forgive me. May your spirit run with the Great Mother." She whispered. "I would've been screwed if you hadn't come along." I let out an offended noise, offended that he was putting himself in front of me. I would've been screwed too, considerably less, but still, screwed. I pouted in my head. Neytiri rose, grabbing my wrist and pulling me up. I yipped in surprise, and Neytiri began to pull me away. "Uh, miss? Where are you taking me?" I spoke, unsure if she knew English. "Hey, wait. Wait! Where you goin'? Where are you taking Rei?" Jake cried, crashing through some plants to catch up to me and Neytiri. "Slow down a second will you? I just wanted to thank you for killing those--" He made the mistake of grasping Neytiri's shoulder. Neytiri spun around, and WHACK! She walloped him on the head with her bow, sending Jake to the ground. And then Neytiri spoke English. Accented, halted, angry English.
"Don't thank. You don't thank for this. This is sad, very sad only." She growled, tightening her grasp on my wrist. "Okay, I'm sorry. Whatever I did, I'm sorry." Jake apologized. He's such an idiot... I grumbled in my head. Neytiri gestured to the bodies of the viperwolves. "All this is your fault! They did not need to die." Neytiri cried. "They attacked me! How'm I the bad guy?!" I hissed, and Neytiri silenced him with the tip of her bow at his throat. "Your fault!" Jake scooched back a bit. "YOUR FAULT!" Neytiri snarled. "You're like a baby, making noise, don't know what to do." Jake slowly got up, cautiously eyeing the both of us. "Fine, fine." He mumbled gently. "Okay, fine, but if you love your little forest friends," Jake grumbled. I growled and spoke to him. "You're pissing off not only her, but me as well, Jake!" I warned, my tone rising. Jake ignored me. "So why not just let them kill my ass? What's the thinking?" I hate to say it, but the idiot has a point. Still making it all about him though. I thought to myself. "Why save you?" Neytiri clarified. "Yeah, why save me?" Jake asked. "You have a strong heart. No fear." Neytiri leaned closer to Jake. "But stupid!! Ignorant like a child!" Neytiri criticized. Neytiri turned around, stalking off, dragging me along with her, and Jake went after her. "Hey, wait up!" He called to her as she nimbly climbed a tree root, me following close, in an effort to stay balanced. Last thing I need is to fall to my death and take the princess and heir to the Omaticaya clan with me.
"If I'm so ignorant, maybe you should teach me." Jake offered. "Not really the time to flirt, Jake!" I cried as Neytiri pulled me up a large branch. "Sky people cannot learn. You do not See." Neytiri stated somberly. Does she think I'm a native then-? I thought to myself, confused. She leaped onto another elevated root, Jake following after. I was surprised he made it, and I guess he was too, because he gasped in awe at the bioluminescent moss that lit up as we stepped on it. He ran to catch up with us with an easy jogging pace. "Well, then teach me to 'See'." He pushed. "No one can teach you to See." Neytiri scoffed. We ran across another elevated root of the tree, now crossing a deep gorge brimming with glowing water. Jake hesitated for a moment, realizing the height he was at now before continuing, "Look, c'mon, can't we talk?" Jake called desperately after me and Neytiri. "He sounds like an idiot." I grumbled, more to myself than Neytiri. Neytiri snorted, but kept going. "Say, where'd you learn English? Dr. Augustine's school?" He tripped over something, sending him almost over the edge, pinwheeling his arms to try and rebalance himself. "Woooaaah!" He cried as he almost fell off. I wrestled out of Neytiri's grip and grabbed him by the bicep, yanking him up with surprising strength, but his spear flew into the water below. "You're like a baby." Neytiri repeated. She then sighed, and then grumbled something incoherently under her breath.
"I need your help." Jake pushed again, as Neytiri grabbed my wrist once more and pulled me along. I sighed. Jake really was stupid. "You should not be here." Neytiri warned. "Ok, take me with you." Jake went on. "No. Go back." Neytiri turned around and pushed him away gently, stalking away. "No," Jake begged, and went after us. Neytiri shoved him hardly now, cursing in Na'vi. "Go back." She said, glaring coldly at him. Then Neytiri froze, her eyes widening in wonder. I felt small tingles run up my arms and I jolted slightly before whipping my head around to see the last thing I would expect; A large collection of woodsprites, floating down on me and Jake. Jake noticed Neytitri's amazed look, and asked her, "What?" Neytiri didn't reply, instead she looked to me, as the woodsprites landed on my cuts and they actually healed them. It sent a shiver down my spine, and a rush of adrenaline hit me. I laughed gently as the woodsprites continued to float down onto me and Jake. "What— what are they?" Jake asked Neytiri, almost completely coated in them now. "Seeds of the Sacred Tree— very pure spirits." Neytiri explained. Jake stood stock-still, not wanting to upset them. "Uh huh," He said awkwardly. He chuckled, gazing at me and the seeds in awe. Neytiri was mesmerized. Then slowly, the seeds floated off and away. "Nice job, Jake, you scared them off." I teased. Jake eyerolled. "What was that all about?" Neytiri seemed shaken as she seized both of our hands and ordered, "Come!"
