Mew was grateful that even in the middle of winter it hadn't snowed much, so he and Gulf can take a drive on New Year's Eve together.

"Teach, they didn't have any meat buns left," Mew said as he opened the passenger side door of Gulf's car, a plastic bag from a convenience store in hand.

It was only natural that on a busy day like New Year's Eve, even the parking lot at the convenience store was packed, so they had to park on the side of the road while Gulf waited with the engine on.

Mew fastened his seat belt and continued, "they didn't have the meat buns you usually eat, but they did have the deluxe kind. Maybe it just would have been cheaper to get pizza?"

He handed Gulf the change, and Gulf smiled at him, amused by the serious look on his face. High school students nowadays didn't concern themselves with the cost of things.

"It's okay," Gulf said. "It's not like it's that much more expensive."

"What? It's 500 more!" Mew cried out.

Gulf laughed.

"This isn't a laughing matter!" Mew said, looking even more serious as he placed their drinks in the cup holders. He put the black coffee on Gulf's side and the sports drink on his side. "If you wanna eat now, I'll unwrap them."

"Okay."

Gulf turned on his blinker and checked the rearview mirror, preparing to pull back out onto the road.

"Ah, watch out for that bike behind you, Teach. It doesn't have its headlights on," Mew warned.

He was actually a great navigator. In the past six months, Mew had learned how to be an expert passenger. He was an intelligent person. So maybe that was to be expected, but when Gulf had Mew along with him in the car, it made things a lot easier. After the bike passed, Gulf pulled back out onto the road.

After winter vacation was over, it would finally be the last semester, and then the critical time of college entrance exams. Therefore, Gulf hadn't let Mew see him once during the break. Not on Christmas Eve, nor on Christmas. Instead, he had proposed taking a drive to see the first sunrise of New Year. Usually, Mew spent New Year's Eve out all night with his friends, so his parents weren't suspicious at all when he left. Mew was thrilled at Gulf's kindness.

If Mew had been in school, he would have been able to see Gulf more often, but since Gulf had ordered him to study, Mew obeyed him and studied for the entrance exams without complaining once.

Before they watched the first sunrise, they stopped by a small temple far away from where they lived to offer prayers for the New Year. Mew clapped his hands together and prayed as he stole glances at Gulf's beautiful profile.

Finally, it was New Year's Day. That meant Mew's exam would be coming up before he knew it, so he wouldn't have another opportunity to spend time alone like this with Gulf again. Gulf would never allow it, and Mew himself wouldn't have time for it. And then, after Mew graduated, he would never be able to see Gulf again. Not only would their game of make-believe lovers end, but he would graduate from high school and wouldn't be able to see Gulf at all.

Mew loved Gulf so much, and even though they were alone together now, and even though Gulf had been so nice to him, and even though at that moment they felt like actual lovers, it was a game of make-believe. It wasn't real. And there was nothing he could do to stop it.

Mew felt his throat tighten, and he quickly looked away. He loved Gulf. He loved him so much. He should have been praying to pass his entrance exams, but when he had held his hands together at the temple, the only thing going through his mind was Gulf.

With the car stopped on the side of a deserted mountain road, during the first sunrise of the New Year, Mew silently prayed, 'I don't want to be apart from him. Please don't let Teach Gulf and I apart.'

But Mew wasn't watching the sunrise. He was making love to Gulf with the seat down, and he knew the sun had risen when the first rays of sunlight filtered through the car window.

'This might be the last time. The last time I make love to Gulf. I just have a feeling.'

"Mew," Gulf said painfully, but Mew didn't let up. "...Mew."

Mew might never hear Gulf pant like that again. He might never hear Gulf call his name like that again.
