Unscrewing the air vent, Stella pulled it open and sneezed at the amount of dust trapped in the ventilation shaft.
She gave out a quiet sound of frustration, "ugh."
The usual damp smell of the basement was engulfed in the rich aroma of the Lavender Essential Oil that Nora had bought earlier. Nora was Stella's devoted caretaker who had adopted her and Leo. To Stella, Nora was like her own mother.
Stella grabbed the dust mask off the nearby shelf and slipped it on, clutching the duster. She wiped it along the ventilation shaft, catching any debris in her path. The air vent was located at the bottom of the wall, in the corner of the basement, which made it a great place for dust to gather.
After repeating this for about a million times, she realised that there was more of this grime deep inside the shaft. The vent was wide enough so Stella leaned in to reach the dust in the lower shaft when she lost her footing and fell.
It had been that morning when Leo decided that he'd go to Prospect Park to go ice skating. Stella had agreed that she'd tag along too but Nora had said that she was not allowed to go until the air vent was cleaned. Leo, being impatient, had left without Stella; like the traitor he was.
Her first impulse was to grab on to something to stop her from falling, but there was nothing to grab on to. She was surrounded by a thick blanket of darkness. It was like falling into a void that you could never return from.
She remembered how her typical brother had persuaded her into doing the typical chore of cleaning out the ventilation shaft.
Why does Leo get to do the easier chores while I have to do the harder ones? She thought.
Huh, probably because I'm older...does one minute even make a difference?
Stella's shirt puffed around her by the force of the wind from the fall. She clutched her necklace instinctively. It had been a gift from her grandmother; a teardrop-shaped necklace with a silver chain and a royal-blue sapphire pendant.
Her mask was torn off from behind her ears and she was falling rapidly with her back first. The cold air gave her a sickening feeling in the stomach.
What exactly have I fallen into? She thought.
A mineshaft? No, there aren't any mines under New York. A sewer? Nope, if it was a sewer, I'd probably hit the water by now. Then...what?
Oh I know! This is a one way trip to my certain death!
She didn't fear heights—never. She'd never feared the sensation of free-falling through space. But now, she felt like an ant compared to the immense force of gravity. A helpless entity being pulled along towards her fate.
It felt like she had been falling for hours; she probably wouldn't stop until she'd reached the centre of the Earth. But she noticed something strange about her surroundings. The darkness was starting to fade as it gave in to a dark grey. The dark grey permitted Stella to recognise the outlines of tall pillars of r—
"Ugh," she groaned in dismay at the force that had hit her from below. It felt surprisingly soft to touch. Stella ricocheted and rolled onto a cold surface. She just lay there on her side, cheek against what she believed was rock.
Stella lifted her chin and looked up to see the outline of what she thought an enormous moth, flying some distance away. It slowly faded into the darkness.
Is this all a dream? She wondered.
Most likely a dream...but it feels too real to be one.
Stella gingerly sat up, all her muscles acing from the fall.
If that moth hadn't broke my fall, I'd be in my grave right now.
She took a moment to take a deep breath and forget what she had just saw. Stella gazed at the outlines of tall stone formations and caves that were near her. She looked down and almost died of shock.
She had fallen next to a gaping abyss of which the darkness seemed to be never ending.
Oh the darkness. Stella recalled.
It wasn't seemingly pitch black, which was weird.
Where is the light coming from? Ah, it must be m-
"Well... well...well...what do we have here?" Spoke a surprisingly foreign voice.
Stella swivelled around to come face to face with a six-foot silhouette of a rat.

Thank you for reading the first chapter of my first remake/fanfic!!! I'm thinking of sticking with the 'Gregor the Overlander' storyline but I'll also be modifying it a bit. This is set during the second book btw. I might make a few books to cover the whole storyline. I'm also gonna add more after 'The Code of Claw.'
